Lighting Portraits On Location With ND Filters

Learn the basics of lighting your portraits on location using an ND filter!
Lighting a good portrait or headshot on location doesn't have to be difficult. One of the challenges you'll run into if you're a bokeh lover is balancing your flash with the ambient light when you're at a wide-open aperture. By using a variable ND filter, you can control that ambient exposure and keep your strobe from having to work hard to overpower the sun and the available light.

Nice! This concept had been on my mind and you’re right on time with this example thank you. I was wondering about introducing a CP filter into portraiture in much the same manner. I don’t currently use any types of filters is why I ask. All the same should basically apply when using a CP filter I’m guessing, except I may still have to use the HSS on the flash in that case. It’d be nice to polarize the harsh highlights say reflecting from blonde hair or off leaves in the shot.

Very succinctly explained Mr Quiles. Thank you. One question though. HSS and ND filters allow you to achieve the same thing, right? Expose for the background and then expose (light) the subject. So how do you choose one over the other?

The only reason I like this version of ND filters over my Kase or OTC clip in sensor ND filter, is for faster removal or attachment. What I want to know since this is a variable ND, do you still get the dreaded X at some point within the adjustment range?

I'm interested to see your HSS and comparison video. A lot of photographers claim you get more power using the ND method but I did a few tests of my own and didnt find that to be true at all. What I do agree however is that HSS likely drains your battery power more/ is more taxing on your flash than ND(slower recycle at max power etc)

Been using them for a while. What I hate is having to have a different one for each different lens. Canon on the R5 had the EF to RF adapter with a built in variable ND filter. It's absolutely awesome as with a L grip on the R5 my finger tip is right at the dial for the ND. So it's like it has a built in adjustable ND filter that fits every lens. I set shutter speed and aperture and just dial in the ND I need to get under 1/200th with my fingertip. It's awesome. And I'm not looking to change to RF lenses at all.

Hello Miguel, thanks to share this interesting video. Allow me 2 questions please: 1) Do you prefer to use a good solid ND or a good VND to shoot documentaries in Log 4K? I mean documentaries around the world to shoot cities and people. 2) Why everybody always uses the lens hood to shoot in sunny days, then when guys use a ND filter, nobody use the lens hood anymore? I think it is a bad habit not to use a lens hood with an ND filter. Thank you.

Great video!! Quick question - Can you use ND grad filters to reduce overexposure of neon lights?? I am doing talking head vids in low light with a neon sign in the background. The problem is that the neon sign appears overexposed (white & blurry) even after I've made changes to the camera settings (Aperture, ISO and Shutter speed). Plus I am using 2 soft box lights and a Sony ZV-E10 with the Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens. Yout thoughts to using ND filters in this case??
@MiguelQuilesJr
@MiguelQuilesJr Год назад
Thank you and great question! You can use an ND to bring the overall exposure down which will bring the neon lights to where they need to be, but then you'll have to add even more light to yourself and the rest of your scene. That's how I do it at my studio 👍
@FC-py6xk
@FC-py6xk Год назад
@@MiguelQuilesJr thanks! Would you know if there are any ND filters where you can use them for only certain portions of the lens? From what I understand from your video, the ND filter will affect everything that you see through your lens. But let’s say that you only want the ND filter to affect a section of the footage, then is it possible to do this?? In my case, the overexposed neon sign takes up the upper top right corner of my talking head video, so preferably I’d just want the ND filter to affect only the neon sign.
@MiguelQuilesJr
@MiguelQuilesJr Год назад
You could use this type of filter, or you can use ND film to place over the neon sign itself if it lends itself to that kind of application. amzn.to/3fCLRtA
@FC-py6xk
@FC-py6xk Год назад
@@MiguelQuilesJr Once again, thanks!! So, if you use this ND film, then you just put it directly on the neon sign and when I start recording my talking head video, then the ND film will reduce the level of exposure of only the neon sign in the footage. Is my understanding of how the ND film works correct??
@MiguelQuilesJr
@MiguelQuilesJr Год назад
That is correct. It would lower the exposure of the neon sign which has the film applied. The sheets are usually square or rectangular so it may not look great depending on the sign, it's an option though.

I'm stuck with an old Paul C Buff Einstein that doesn't support HSS. Great for studio work but no good in an outdoor scenario like in the video. Would you buy an ND filter or try to sell the Einstein and buy something that supports HSS?
@MiguelQuilesJr
@MiguelQuilesJr 2 года назад
That's a tough one. Einstein is a great light, but you'll need a batter PA k to use it on location. That will probably cost a couple hundred dollars, but then again so will a good variable ND filter. I'd sell the light and buy something modern that supports HSS and TTL personally.
