Testing the Woodland Scenics Just Plug lighting system with different LED's on my model railroad layout (1:20), and review of Menard's HO scale pre-lit buildings (0:35). Review of custom lit & kitbashed buildings starts about 3:20, with fire station at 4:22.

Thank you, Pete. I greatly appreciate your effort in sharing this information! I've invested some money in the Just Plug system, but yes, costs spiral rapidly when you want to add more lights. You hit the target exactly about the issues you have regarding the realism of some lighting, like the Menards products. The brightness is overwhelming, yet somehow unrealistic. Many thanks for the tips and commentary!

This was a nifty video - thanks for posting! It covered a number of lighting strategies I’ve been curious about. Could I ask for a little more detail on the LED “shop lights” you used (small strips)? Searching amazon I’m bombarded with so many other LED items I’m lost!

Did you know that your Menards buildings can simply be modified to use woodland scenic's light kit to dim the lights in those buildings.

Lately I've been experimenting with resistors and buckboards using a stand-alone 12v power supply to save on dimmer controls. Would love to hear your suggestions, thanks!

I purchased a few cheap LEDs off the net, but they warn not to use anything over 3v. Will the Woodland Scenic Just Plug system run these without burning them out?
@petes3dscalemodels881
@petes3dscalemodels881 4 месяца назад
You can experiment since they're cheap, but it's easy to burn them out. These days on my layout I am using 3v LEDs with a 12v power supply. I reduce the voltage with resistors. I also use 'buckboards', which has a 'dimmer' adjustment and can take 12v and dial it down to 3v or whatever I need. I also have a dedicated 3v power supply. Hope this helps!

Do you need resistors in each line for the led's? Also what if you're trying to light something opposite the layout or on a large layout, can you solder additional wire to extend the length? I'm not good with wiring and still learning lol.
@martys8349
@martys8349 4 месяца назад
I have similar questions. I'm pretty sure there's no problem with extending the wires to the length you need them though. Every video I've come across says how easy it is to get resistors, how common they are, etc, but never specifically say, "Get this resistor." I've been looking for information about where to order resistors and what type, etc. and I'm spinning my wheels.
@petes3dscalemodels881
@petes3dscalemodels881 4 месяца назад
You can extend the wires as needed. The use of resistors is really dependent on the voltage needed and how much you want to dim the LED. There is no simple answer unfortunately. Search the web for 'voltage calculator', you should find simple apps to help figure what resistors you need based on power supply and LED voltage. Hope this helps!

Are the warm LED's bright enough to use with fiber optics? I like this system but sometimes I want to have just a few very small lights, like a naked bulb or maybe oil lamp hanging in a stationary (like decommissioned) caboose. In this specific instance there is an abandoned caboose by a pond and some folks are fishing for bullhead off the steps of it...all I need is a dim light in the caboose and one by the water. Just a strand of warm yellow fiber optic light will do.

Hello, Thank you for the video. I have been wondering if you could use just regular LED 1.8 mm lights with the just plug system. I was wondering if you had to stick a resistor on the LED or did you just attach it. Also did you happen to test how many of the 1.8 mm LED's you could but onto one plug-in location? Thanks again for doing the video.

Hi, I didn't add any resistors. Not sure if that will effect the lifespan of the led's or not. I'm able to adjust the brightness using the just plug dimmer control. When shopping for led's I make sure they are in the 12-18 V range I just lit a small sawmill with 3 of the 2mm led's tied together, all plugged in to one just plug slot and it worked great. Hope this helps!

Did you just buy plug and play adapters to plug in your cheap lights? I've seen really cheap street lights also, but they seem to be only 4 volts.
@petes3dscalemodels881
@petes3dscalemodels881 4 года назад
@@nicknelson2602 I look for LEDs that are 12-18v, they work good with the just plug dimmers. To connect them to the dimmer control, you can get the litte plugs from woodland, but I found them cheaper online by searching 1.25mm JST 2 pin. These don't have a resistor, but they seem to work fine and you can control the brightness with the dimmer. Hope this helps!

@@petes3dscalemodels881 did you solder the wires or buy the small clips? Also, did you test to see if you could get more than 1 light per strand? I ordered some lights and connections last night after watching your vid several times, thanks
@petes3dscalemodels881

Some soldered, and other various connectors. I mostly use the clips for easy hook up during testing. I keep a just plug dimmer control Box on my work bench for just that purpose. I try to combine lights when I can to save on dimmer controls, recently did a string of 3 for a sawmill, works great. That's one of my projects in an upcoming video.
