As someone playing with a pure Dragon Monk ally, really cool to see this build with its mix of spells and Melee to be a crowd controller and support! Definitely think the theme song of this build is Thunderstruck by AC/DC ;)

Likewise I have a fellow player playing dragon monk so wanted to do this subclass justice! Love the song suggestion! Wish I could play copyrighted music on so many of these build videos 😂

Love it, love that we are pushing people everywhere! Reflecting on this, I’m almost tempted to do the dreaded warlock dip as well. Imagine ascendant dragon 3, genie warlock (djinn) 2, tempest cleric 6, then monk X You’d need to take half elf to even get the abilities up to a suitable level (like Dex 16, Wis 14, cha 16). But, you’d be able to invest in more Cha to make the most of the presence of dragons ability, you could have repelling blast for longer range pushing and having a low wisdom might not do much for you AOE damage wise, but with thunder bolt strike, just moving a bucketload of enemies might be enough to justify the investment. Just thinking out loud 😎 But I did do the warlock thing. And people hate the warlock thing. 😅
@dungeondr
@dungeondr Год назад
Warlock definitely crossed my mind, I was actually considering it for hexblade curse's improved critical chance to get a critical hit on the lightning punch. Or genie warlock djinn bludgeoning+crusher for the extra 5ft push on a punch. I even considered swords bard for their mobile flourish maneuver to focus on that pinball like attack. But sadly for my builds I've got that strict level 1-12 campaign range I try to stick to, so hitting certain milestones like extra attack and thunderous strike within that level range limited me. Also as you suggested the multiclassing requirements are really tough. Might be possible on a higher level build though!

You get first ASI on level 9 with this build, and it comes online on 11th level. Even on 20th level oneshot - you loose one of better monk abilities by investing 2 levels of warlock.
@dungeondr
@dungeondr Год назад
@@notsochosenone5669 actually you get the first ASI at level 5. Wisdom is bumped from 17 to 18 with the half feat. And the second ASI is just 1 lvl behind where it would normally be. 😉 *Edit: Wait, 2 levels of Warlock? Are you talking about my sun soul monk build? *Edit 2: AHH I see you are talking about Jeff's build. Yeah the delay on those ASIs is pretty big!
@jeffchong3901
@jeffchong3901 Год назад
@@notsochosenone5669 oh yeah, there’s opportunity cost everywhere on my idea. Stick with my plan and you’ll never see diamond soul! However, I think every build boils down to what you want to emphasise. Peter has made a really balanced build, giving a bunch of options for single target and AOE control once it comes online. My half cooked idea was all about forced movement, getting to single target movement, later graduating into multitarget movement. Giving up ASIs might be acceptable if you think you’re gaining enough from the multiclass. Doesn’t make it my idea the best one ever, just something to mull over 😎

Another subclass that can be nice here is rune knight, adding mystical powers for flavor (your runes) the size increase is nice for the aspect of the dragon resistance, see it like a severly nerfed aura of warding for very nieche circumstances, where going bigger helps you provide resistance to more allies. Of course, for flavor/theme being able to grow in size works nicely too.

I’ve had a conversation about using flask of oil as an improvised weapon. There seams to be some argument, RAW, whether throwing the oil would APPLY the oil since, RAW, throwing the oil (not the flask) is a use object interaction while throwing the oil flask as an improvised weapon would only do the damage but no oil effect. Now, I fully hate this interpretation but I can see why a DM would interpret it this way (5e rules are sometimes ridiculous). So I’m wondering what you thoughts on this is
@dungeondr
@dungeondr Год назад
Thanks for pointing this out! I think I'm right in saying it's possible to throw a flask as one of our attacks as part of extra attack, since it's an improvised weapon. So that part seems fine. So the question is whether there is mechanical difference between the throwing of an oil flask with use an object Vs as an improvised weapon attack as part of extra attack. In the oil flask text it says you make a ranged attack and on a hit the oil is applied. Similarly with an improvised attack we're making a ranged attack. Because of this I find it very very hard to justify a DM ruling that the improvised weapon ranged attack wouldn't also break the flask and have the same effect. I try to always provide conservative readings of rules so I don't misrepresent my builds, but in this case I think a DM ruling against it is just being a pedant. Edit: I will add I think it's reasonable that splashing the oil is an action though as that would take care. The mechanical difference is the flask is destroyed.
@FlutesLoot
@FlutesLoot Год назад
When a non-magical item that isn't a weapon says it requires an action to activate, it requires the Use an Object action. I have a video about the Thief Rogue that highlights this detail of the game that isn't widely understood or applied. From the PHB: "Use an Object You normally interact with an object while doing something else, such as when you draw a sword as part of an attack. When an object requires your action for its use, you take the Use an Object action. This action is also useful when you want to interact with more than one object on your turn." Since the description for an oil flask has using it as an improvised weapon as its description with the Use an Object action, it's obviously strange that it's an attack without the attack action. I wish they'd clear this up in One D&D but I suspect they'll just do away with it.
@dungeondr
@dungeondr Год назад
I agree that the use an object interaction should be used where an item says it's needed, however when wielding an object as an improvised weapon (i.e. throwing it) I think it's completely reasonable to use the improvised weapon rules instead. Now, I understand there's typically a rule that specific rules override general rules, so strictly speaking the rules written would suggest you can't use a flask of oil in this way, BUT the oil flask rules muddy these waters by saying: "Make a ranged attack against a target creature or object, treating the oil as an improvised weapon.". Because of this I believe there's a very strong argument in saying we can use the improvised weapon rules for *throwing* the oil flask, justifying the 1 attack cost of throwing it. I would argue the intent is that it can be thrown as an attack, and that the rules regarding the use object interaction were intended to relate only to splashing the contents or pouring the oil onto the floor, both much more involved activities. Then there's also the physics argument: the oil flask weighs 1lb. The handaxe weighs 2lb, so in terms of weight there's no suggestion that we can't use an attack action to throw it. We also aren't doing anything to prime a oil flask to be thrown, no special buttons or magic words, we're just throwing it at a target. And it's not like a net, which because of how it's wielded (size and complexity) it requires the whole attack action. And the last argument is balance. The oil flask ultimately just deals the equivalent damage of a great sword, and is destroyed after use. This is reasonably powerful but far from meeting the standard for being broken as it can't be combined with great weapon master. As with all edge cases, it's best to be open with the DM and discuss it, but I feel comfortable assuming most tables would accept the improvised weapons interpretation. Edit: I forgot to add one last important argument. The improvised weapon rules state you can wield a dead goblin as an improvised weapon. If you can throw a goblin, you can throw a flask of oil. Case closed 😎

@@dungeondr haha time to throw three dynamites with Extra Attack :P
@dungeondr
@dungeondr Год назад
I mean... If you're going to light the fuses with a breath weapon I don't see why not! 😉 Nothing specific in the rules about lighting the dynamite and grenades on fire in the DMG, but a container of gunpowder? That actually does have rules for fire damage, so if your campaign has it then that's a viable trick in my opinion! Use object interaction is always in my opinion there to do something complex, like lighting a fuse, or doing something that takes care. Throwing an object at something? That's an improvised weapon attack 😎

I think the split in two vids was a great idea! Allows things to be more digestible, and hopefully makes things a bit easier on your end! I thought the build was really neat! I do have a question though! This build seems to be REALLY bonus action hungry between the Monk features, Telekinetic, Hunter's Mark, and Spells. How would you plan on working that out in game? Great vid as always! Looking forward to the next build!
@dungeondr
@dungeondr Год назад
Thanks! Yeah if I'd kept the old format this video would be loooong. But I'm also not sure if the algorithm is going to get upset over posting two similar video titles in a row 😒 Agree it is bonus action heavy, telekinetic though is only really there when the situation calls for it, (e.g. repositioning an ally) otherwise I think we'd be relying on monk features or bonus action spells. That being said, with how busy that bonus action is it does make the other races I discussed even more attractive options, so I'd actually strongly consider going for one of the fizbans dragonborn instead. Or pickup skill expert feat and grab either athletics for decent grappling options or boost a charisma skill to be a decent face character.

I haven't looked yet but my money would be Fizban's blue dragonborn 11 monk, 6 tempest cleric, 3 stars druid. (figure out a way to get metamagic adept for quicken and transmute spell) Race and monk provide us with AOE lightning options, 6 tempest turns it into forced movement and druid (chalice is just to pick up more healing or unbreakable concentration) weaponizes the forced movement for more damage. (if circumstances don't favor using spike growth we can transmute spell spirit shroud from cleric into lightning for more damage and easier forced movement, in case it's been a long day with a lot of encounters)

I can see that you tried really hard for this one, but even you had to put 6lv of Tempest Cleric which is fairly decent domain by its own. (To be honest since you already spent 16 on dex, medium armor wouldnt be too bad) Furthermore, clerics by default already have access to reliable Spirit Guardian + Spirtual Weapon + Dodge Combo which will last far longer than Descending Dork's insulting breath. I can see, you really tried hard for this one. However, I am not convinced this monk subclass has much worth, especially for stealing chance for either Draconic Patron or re-write for Draconic Sorcerer which was bit generic.
@dungeondr
@dungeondr Год назад
Tempest Cleric is good however as you've pointed out, their features often don't synergise with other great cleric spells (spiritual weapon and spirit guardians) and because of the very limited number of spell slots they have available to them their class features compete for spells. And while the combo you mentioned is indeed powerful, it's very costly and requires two rounds of set up. This is why I felt the combination of tempest cleric and ascendant dragon works so well: we resolve a big issue for the tempest cleric by giving them alternative ways to use their class features in addition to giving the ascendant dragon more power through destructive wrath and spell slots to enable hunter's mark. I'm confident that the combination of both classes provides something more unique, fun and powerful than either would offer individually.
@kwaksea
@kwaksea Год назад
@@dungeondr Even if Guardian combo needs two turn (which can be done by any cleric and still will be more reliable than monk + Tempest combo), what you have demonstrated was why Fizban Dragonborn (Chrom and Metalic have Lightning and Gen has Thunder) is great with Tempest Domain not how this build proves Descending dunce is any worthy (keep in mind even in this build monk's breath only does 2d6 dmg while Dragonborn breath does 3d10 dmg at lv 12 why is this monk necessary in first place?).

My goal in my videos isn't to rank the subclasses or tell anyone what is the "best class for X". My goal is to take subclasses and classes, even those that people such as yourself have a low opinion of, and show what cool optimization tricks can be done with them, and hopefully make the most of what the features are trying to deliver. Incidentally, your childish name calling of a subclass isn't cute, funny or creative. It's annoying, and only serves to put down people who do enjoy this subclass.
