Over a year before declaring independence from Britain, the Continental Congress issues the United Colonies’ first currency when it provides $2 million in bills of credit-backed by nothing more than the promise of “future tax revenues” and prone to rampant inflation, the notes ultimately have little monetary value

Erich Maria Remarque, author of the 1928 World War I novel All Quiet on the Western Front, is born in Osnabruck, Germany-he serves in the German army during World War I and uses his experiences to write one of the most important books of the 20th century

U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act (better known as the G.I. Bill), an unprecedented law designed to compensate returning members of the armed forces, known as G.I.s, for their efforts in World War II-the act gives veterans funding for education and for low-interest home and business loans, playing a major role in the expansion of higher education and the economic boom of the 1950s

After 16 years on the run from law enforcement, 81-year-old James Bulger, a violent Boston mob boss wanted for 19 murders, is arrested in Santa Monica, California-the FBI had placed Bulger on its Ten Most Wanted list and offered a $2 million reward for information leading to his capture, the largest amount ever offered by the agency for a domestic fugitive
