I'm so glad I found this video! Here in the UK we don't get that many big lightening storms, however, my gf (who now lives here) used to live in Cabot, AR and I used to spent 3 months at a time there. Never in my life have I seen such amazing and frequent storms!! In fact I was never into any kind of photography until I had witnessed them. I used to sit in the front door at night HD videoing the lightening passing from the direction of NLR towards Searcy in order to get the odd screen capture from the vids. Great vid, and great info - cheers!! :-)

Excellent video. I have been shooting lightning for 8 years. I decided to watch some how to videos to get me pumped up for spring and summer. I bought a lightning trigger and am can't wait to see what it does, because I also miss a beautiful stroke when I shoot. I usually get 2 or 3 photos a year that I share with friends, have lots that I don't share because the composition is not good.

You mentioned you prefer "high electricity storms." What tools do you use to determine which storms those are, and what do you look for in those tools?

Hi Ben. Do you use mirror lock up to stop any extra vibration at all? I use this method when I take night shots along the river Thames in London, and I found that it gives me good results. Thanks for sharing your video. Excellent.

For lightning you rarely have the time to set up like this. Unless you are using a lightning trigger you are usually doing a lot of guess work and using bulb modes and a remote shutter. When I chase storms I rarely have more then 10 or so minutes in each location before I need to move and get away from rain or something. Locking up the mirror would surely help if you were doing a long full scene exposure at night. None of my shots have been done that way though. Thanks for the question though, it was a good one!

Do you recommend any sources for learning to read radar and other weather apps to better predict weather fronts...especially staying out of the way of potentially dangerous zones? Thanks for the post!

Hi Paul, here are a couple great You Tube videos for learning to read radar. I use Radar Scope almost exclusively as my weather app, it has live up to the minute alerts and warnings and extremely detailed multi layered radars. It isn't cheap, but it is worth every penny. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sreogytRrD4.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bq0-QXXtOro.html
