@@jnjentinc It wouldn't of helped parlay during the last strike. At least one other boat anchored near parlay received a side strike from parlay. If parlay wouldn't of got hit the other boat likely would of and parlay would of received the side strike.

I was in a marina in northern Florida many years ago on a 32' charter mono. We had a spectacular and scary thunder storm come right overhead with deafening thunder. In the morning we found out a yacht a few docks over had been sunk from a direct lightning strike that blew a hole in the bottom of the hull. This is scary stuff and as Parley found out, very expensive. This device seems to be the solution! Thanks Ty, and glad to see your subscribers growing as they should be!

Thanks for the interesting and informative post. I’ve just recently started watching you and a few other sailing channels. Great job on the boat resurrection! I ‘Captained’ a couple big aluminum semi-subs in Grand Cayman for about 5 yrs and was amazed they never got hit by lightning. And here’s your gratuitous comment for the algorithms

Interesting. Definitely going to do some research on this. Been watching Colin and the Parley crew replace all of their stuff...for the second time! That sucks! Colin made mention (and I think he is right) that you cannot ground a true lightening strike. I mean we all learned from Dr. Brown, a lightening strike is 1.21 gigawatts...right? You can't ground 1.21 gigawatts on a sailboat, it's not a stainless steel DeLorean😉. But if what I understand from Ty about this system, it isn't grounding or attempting to ground the strike, instead it is neutralizing your charge so you don't attract the strike in the first place. That actually sounds doable. Being an all steel boat, Seeker should really look into this I would think. Thanks for the info Ty!

I know a guy on a 45 ft cabin cruiser live aboard, Tampa Bay erea lightning capital of USA, it has a massive super structure and a solar farm on top all that, here in the gulf of Mexico a few miles from my house, he is surrounded by water a mile or more water on all sides no other vessels. He said, the first thing he did was ungrounded everything 14 years later not a single hit.

Certsinly hoping this works for your boat after all the hard work! Especially with all your electric. Nothing is 100% as you say, but this device sounds wonderful! I’ve list several palm trees ti lightning and you are right, one got hit but then the charge jumped sideways to the adjacent tree and they both died. Maybe the truck is to never be in a marina during a lightning storm? Well, at least avoid it when possible 🙏

Dinnteco I believe in spain is the most prominent one, the cost ranges from 6-10k. The thing you should ask is what insurance comes with the device, some offer 100k coverage for any damaged devices from result of a strike.

@SailingDauntless I'm putting it on my 1978 Iwrin 42 ketch. Funny I bought the boat for only 15,000 and am spending half the cost of the boat just on this one device but it is WELL worth the cost to protect from the danger of a strike.

Single plate below the shortest/most direct path from the mast to the water. A single plate is sufficient on monohulls or cats that do not fly a hull.

Ty, looks like great suff. But if it works as you described, I bet it will have an effect to the VHF. And because you put that heatshrink on the antenna rod I would advise you to check if the antenna is still working on the right frequency range after you put up the mast. Heatshrink can affect the antenna behavior because it typically is combined with carbon to color it black. Just my two cents as Amateur Radio Operator. Otherwise, please continue with your technical videos, I love how you work through your challanges! Cheers Marc

Thanks Ty, how do you protect your electronics from an EMP from a lightning strike outside your protected area? I have wondered could boat manufacturers put material in the hull layup to create a faraday cage to protect the electronics inside?

The only maintenance this this style of unit would be clearing cobwebs, cleaning salt depostis etc but these are a sealed unit a long way from salt water (relative to fresh water rain). They basically employ a smooth surface ( this deionises, pointy stuff attracts lighning/ionises btw) and air capacitance between a couple of the sections. So no maintenance to the actual unit but id regularly be going over the electrical conections to make sure they are low resistance. Ie, fresh conductive grease, tight connection and the like

It only makes sense to do this. It’s not just the money. It’s safety. If you get hit while cruising, you are pretty much screwed. It may take months to get your equipment replaced.. and you may have to sail hundreds of miles without engines, chart plotter, gps units, radios, etc. Not a good place to be in. The motor for your bilge pumps?

Hello, I have a 47ft fibreglass sailboat with aluminum mast. The lead keel is covered by fibreglass. I plan to install a copper grounding plate on the outer surface of the hull. How should I connect the plate to the mast? What material, what size? Finally, the plate will be about 50 cm below waterline and about 150 cm away from the mast. To connect the two, the metal rod or cable would have a vertical U shape. Do you see a problem with this? Thank you so much.

My insurance cost went stupid a couple years ago, even though I took my boat out of Florida and now summer below the hurricane zone. I couldn't justify writing that check every year, but I was concerned about lightning. So for half the cost of the insurance premium, I bought a CMCE from EMP. Now I'm happy to self insure knowing my cat is extremely unlikely to get hit.

Thank you for this. I have been wondering what this was since your first hint of it. Now it is on the list of things I am going to have when I can finally get a boat of my own. Lightning is one of those things that nature can throw at you that you never see coming. Sure you can see the lightning around you but you never know when you will get hit.

Appears to be a great product for a direct lightening strike on the mast. How is it deployed to to prevent the effects of a nearby, stray lightning strike. Lightening can carry 100 million to billion volts.

It is typically based on length of the conductor. For 100’ I ran 1/0 (and that was overkill)

I have one, and the only time lightning has come anywhere near my boat is when I was hauled out so the device was no longer grounded to the seawater. Next haul out I might make a ground rod to connect to because we had a few close ones in Trinidad.

Because the device drains current, it need a connection to earth/ground to deposit the ionization

This might be a little above my pay grade, but I believe, although they are charged similarly the boat/ground structure has a higher potential due to additional friction and elevation than the ground or water around it

The only for sure way I know to prevent electrical damage on your boat from mast lightning strikes is to dissipate the charges on the mast. Thus avoiding the development of the lightning channel between the cloud and your mast. Different words, same fix you pointed out. Or keep listening to the many old yacht club mummies that insist there is no way. I have license to speak like that because I'm an old yacht club mummy.

@@SailingDauntless Better of explaining this concept to my Grandkids. They all left high school knowing how electricity works. The electrons will need to flow from the negative to the positive through a conductor. When there is a path that goes from the negative to the positive you have a circuit. Whether you are using a battery, a fuel cell or a solar cell to produce electricity, things are always the same: Every circuit, especially the very complex ones in my parallel drives want to have at a certain voltage. Introduce a higher voltage into any of those circuits and you going to be hating life. Pricey, but stopping the mast from being a conductor is the only solution today for mast lightning strikes.

Went to EMP's site to research (also found Sertec's site to learn more from the manufacture) and I notice that you appear to have what EMP Solutions lists as a "land solution". The "land" variant is different or appears different in that they all seem to have 4 metal balls under the primary metal dome...the CMCEs listed as "Marine Solutions" don't have the smaller metal balls. This beg the question(s) why did you get what is categorized as a land solution? Why do the land solutions have the 4 metal balls and the marine solutions don't? And lastly what do the 4 balls do?

The small balls i strongly suspect are mostly an extention of the pain spherical surfaces function. Smooth curved surfaces perform the deionising function. Id sumise the top and bottom half of the main sphere are electrically isolated and form a capacitor, the lower section of which is grounded through the boat, the 4 smaller spheres and the disk below them form a second deionising surface and a second capacitor. You can google teslas original patent but bear in mind some of the meanings of english words have changed over the last 100 yrs, telsa had a tendency to put superfluous information in patents or omit information as a secondary form of protection of his intellectual property so some knowlege of electronics/physics can be handy.

Being the extremely cheap person I am, why take Tesla’s plans to a machine shop and just have it made? Take the cost of materials, about 10 hours a machine time at $200 p/hr, then double that for a wholesale price, and double it again for retail and you still end up way under what this company is charging for its product. I didn’t read where they offer a guarantee to cover the cost of repairs should you get hit by lightning, or did I overlook it? If that was offered, I could understand the price. Trust me, I hate the fact that the older I get, the cheaper I get. I just can’t justify a 10x markup or more for any product once you know how it’s made.

How do you prevent lightning? You don't. You CAN'T. All you can do is keep it from doing damage by giving it an easy way to the ground (or into the water).
