This video discusses my editing workflow for an image of Humpback Whales at the Silver Bank in Dominican Republic. In this underwater photo editing tutorial video, I speak very casually while still offering insights into my photo editing process, making it feel more personal.
The editing process begins with a vision for the finished image, followed by global changes to clarity and contrast, and then local adjustments to work on specific areas of the image. Adobe Lightroom is a powerful editing tool and even experienced underwater photographers will pick up some tips and tricks. I hope you enjoy.

I would have performed a local adjustment on both pectoral fins to bring down the highlights. Maybe it's just the YT compression, but it seems like you can't see much detail there. They're not technically blown out, so I guess that's just an artistic choice? I can't stand unnatural red either - you see it all the time in GoPro videos where someone has a red filter on at 10 ft. or they point the camera up. Thanks for posting - it's always informative to see someone else's approach.

Hi Brian - Really good point about lowering the highlights on just the pectoral fins. It would help remove some of the glow too. I appreciate the feedback - we're all here to learn.

much appreciated. learned something new with the layers. never new I can remove a color like that. I would have tuned the white balance and used HSL to try to remove the red. woudl take way longer and probably wouldn't be as effective. more underwater photo edit videos with layers, filters and other tools be greatly appreciated. thanks

Thanks Zoubs. The layer is so crucial because you don't want to adjust the color of the entire image at that stage - just the specific area. I've got a few other Lightroom tutorials in my VIP Member series (video.brentdurand.com) but will add your suggestions to my ideas list. Now just for some time to film more videos!

Hi Brent. Great video as always, very informative. One question regarding shooting underwater, in this particular case, when your subject is too far to be lit by the strobes, do you still shoot with the strobes or do you prefer to shoot it without the strobes? Thanks Daniel Silva

Great question Daniel. When the strobes won't have an effect I turn them off. It eliminates any chance of backscatter (caused by the strobe light) and saves the batteries. For something like whales or dolphins where I don't plan to use strobes I leave them on the boat.

@@BrentDurand, thanks for your reply! My setup is a sony A6500 with 2 Sea and Sea YS-D2J but i have one underwater case that doesn't allow me to close the flash of the camera underwater, it blocks the flash of the camera completly but it doesn't allow me to close it. If I switch off the strobes will i get the same effect (not having backcatter)? Thanks Daniel Silva

@@orbisexplorers Hey Daniel. With your housing there are two ways to stop the strobes from firing. First is to disable the flash in the camera menu. The second is to manually turn off each strobe (since your flash on camera is blocked it won't create backscatter). Option 1 is best because it doesn't waste the battery power of the camera. You should be able to turn off the on-camera flash in just 2-3 button presses.

@@BrentDurand thanks for your reply! I love the Sony a6500 above and underwater, one of the few things that i dislike on it, and in all a6xxx series, is the impossibility to disable the flash via menu system, at least in all manual modes (aperture, shutter priority and manual mode), after you pop up the flash, the only way to disable it again is to close it. Even with firmwares upgrades this feature has never been implemented by Sony. Its not a deal breaker for me but i think that it would be possible for Sony to do something about it... Do you know any magical way to disable the flash of this Sony models? Thanks Daniel Silva

@@orbisexplorers Unfortunately I don't have any other ideas. My only thought is that if you're constantly turning strobes on and off, then it might make sense to look for a housing that allows you to open and close the pop-up flash. There are pros and cons to every system...

Great capture! But beyond white balance and a bit of clarity doesn’t benefit much from more work.

Very good point. I filmed this video to mix it up from regular image critiques and editing in my VIP Member video series. Since I filmed the video last spring, Adobe added a Texture slider, which is a simple way to add high frequency detail in a shot like this, and has added a lot more detail in a simple click. All in all, I don't like to spent more than a couple minutes on a photo, which is why I didn't dig in any deeper on this video (after all, if you shoot a good photo you barely need any post :- ). Thanks for the comment and feedback - it's how we all learn!
