Here's a tip I use for practicing: whenever I have anything that's on a line with a weight, like a dog leash, keys on a lanyard, even a poop bag, I'll swing it around like I'm swinging the handle of the whip by the fibers. If you integrate this habit into your daily activities, the next time you pick up the whip you'll be shocked by how much more control you have and how many more creative moves you've come up, seemingly easily and without practice (even though really it's because you've been swinging all sorts of stuff around all the time).
