YOU ARE IN FACT A GIFTED artist. You also have worked very disciplined to harvest your gifts and talents. The best part is that you have a rare gift to teach and share these gifts on RU-vid. Thanks

Thank you for this wonderful review! If someone who has learned how to paint with acrylics thanks to your wonderful videos I would ask you if you would consider doing an oil pastel tutorial on Skillshare or here on RU-vid. I love playing with oil pastel but so far I haven't been able to master these beautiful colorful sticks.

Excellent detailed video. I greatly appreciate found this after seeing them online and the square shaped which is so rare hooked me. Due diligence to make sure they aren't total trash first. The only other square pastel in oil I've ever seen was holbein which are soo pricey. I love that shape though so was happy to see these especially since they are good quality. I don't know why holbein is so expensive here other thanaybe there is no importer for them based in US for some reason...?

These are a chunkier square shape then the Holbein. I really like them too. I would imagine that price diffferences relate to the quality of ingredients used. However, I found them both to work well.

Hi Nancy! Love your channel❤ You mentioned that you used oil pastels to make a model for your acrylic paintings as you worked in a larger scale (4’ x 6’) and it takes you longer to complete, as opposed to an oil painting that you can complete more quickly. With acrylics drying so fast, I would love to see how you add to or rework using fast drying acrylics. Also, do you ever use soft pastel ‘dust’ when painting abstracts? Thank you 😊

Hi Shannon, Actually I meant to say that I can finish an oil pastel painting more quickly than an acrylic painting. In the video I said oil instead of oil pastel so I know that's confusing. But actually now that you bring it up I can finish an oil painting more quickly than acrylic. Yes acrylic dries fast unless you use the slow drying acrylics like Golden's OPEN acrylics, which dry almost the same rate as oil paints. So lots of choices for painters. But with the regular fast drying acrylic I work in layers. This means that I can do one technique over the painting's surface in about an hour, but then need to let it dry for a day before I add the next layer. So my process with acrylic paintings does take longer than if I was working with oil paint or oil pastels. I guess the point I was trying to make was that I can finish a smaller size oil pastel fairly quickly, then I can use that to cut some of the guess work and time from a larger version using my acrylic painting process. And about soft pastels (the chalky versions) I have used them in the past but not any more. The dust is not good to breathe in, and the soft pastels are more fragile once applied to a surface than oil pastels or acrylic or oil paint. Thanks for your comment and watching my video!!

I have a set of oil pastels, but haven’t used them very much if at all….or at least I can’t remember…lol! Problem of being a senior citizen these days…lol! I work mostly in acrylics also. Have just started with gold leaf in my painting…(just finished watching your video on that…thank you!). My husband just came across a set of oils pastels the other day while cleaning out a box…so maybe I have used them…or intended to use them, but forgot about them. Now I would like to try them…do you need a specific paper for them?
@nancyreyner

So glad you dusted off your pastel box and will try them out again. Any paper will work however I like to use a smooth bristol. You can also use any sketch paper that has tooth. The smooth paper allows for easier removal of layers with the knife like I demonstrated in the video. The paper that has tooth grips the colors more. I suggest trying several different types of paper to find what you like best.

What type of fixative or varnish do you use? It's a question, thank you for your video and your answer.
@nancyreyner

I don't use any product over the oil pastel. I let them air dry for several days or longer if I can. Then I store them between freezer paper or release paper. Eventually I frame them with mats and glass for protection. Spray fixatives and varnish, in my opinion, don't look good over oil pastels.
