Despite their name, prairie chickens are not actually chickens at all, they are actually a genus of grouse native to North America, a chicken is any species of the genus Gallus, prairie chickens and chickens belong to entirely different families, prairie chickens belong to the family Tetraonidae, which also includes other grouse species as well as both turkeys and koklass pheasants, while chickens belong to the family Gallidae, which also includes the bamboo partridges, francolins, spurfowl, peafowl, arguses, peacock pheasants, crimson-headed partridge, african forest partridges, snowcocks, dwarf quails, malagasy partridge, and desert partridges, surprisingly, the families Tetraonidae and Gallidae are sister taxa and are included within the superfamily Galloidea.
