You missed a crucial point Scru. "That’s at least what I thought/'Til I clawed and scratched the pen 'til I saw a line draw/Then I could've let bygones be bygones/But I really wanted to rhyme till my line drawn." As in it started as you think of him but the moment he sank himself into the craft he fell in love with hip-hop and realized he discovered his true lifelong passion. At that time he was "Russel Westbrook on a farm" picked up a ball just for fun and the second he heard that first swish, realised that he had truly found himself and what he truly loves.

commenting for the algorithm because I was about to type this EXACT same thing. I love Scru, but this song was literally a metaphor for him stumbling upon hiphop (albeit in an unfavorable fashion), falling in love with it and devoting his life to it out of love for and confidence in his craft. I get what scru was saying, im almost 30 and love real rap, but there are older heads than me that would hate this for that reason. those same people will complain real hiphop isnt getting exposure outside its main fanbase enough, yet when dicky comes and shows through skill and a whole metaphorical bar filled song that he is devoted to the craft, he's questioned and overlooked :/ it just makes no sense tbh i grew up with rap and hiphop and this guy is just a comedian that fell in love with and created a lane in the field that i've loved my whole life. I don't blame scru for seeing it that way but this is just my piece😅

bro the entire point of the song is talking about how he started ironically and then literally found himself in hiphop. he THOUGHT he wanted to do comedy but discovered his true calling in rap. idk where you got that he "doesnt care about the culture" but thats like the complete opposite of reality

Scru he was talking on this song about how he became committed to rap and had found that his true self was hip hop. People including yourself always preach it’s never too late to chase your dreams, and that’s exactly what he’s saying. He stumbled upon hip hop late but became invested. He is a comedian sure but he’s also a technically sound rapper that has way more creative ability than I’d say like 85% of rappers and 99% of today’s artists. He’s more than just a vulture culture and genuinely makes some of the most creative visioned art in this genre. I’m not saying you have to love the art he makes because at the end of the day it’s obviously subjective and he has a niche market and lane he works in, but he found hip hop late and became invested there’s no denying that. No hate all love over here for you Scru.

* if you want another song about him talking about it check it out The Antagonist and Professional Rapper. Also if you do react to his new album know that it is a loose story of his life and that it is more of abstract art but the message it has is actually very deep on his own personal level and life but it was done in a comedy way to one reach his audience and also make the show Dave a bright fun story of a show. Dave is a genius when it comes to relaying his messages through comedy and creativity. *

funny that the song has lines about Scru's mentality of looking down on dicky or disliking him just because he's not as commited as other people, but they started respecting dicky as he showed that he has enough skills to be here. yet Scru still keeps mentioning that he doesn't like him because he isnt committed to the rap game?? he even says he will listen to someone worse than dicky if that someone sounds more committed?? just to me sounds like hes a little salty

Been listening to your reactions for years Scru and I’m happy for your channel’s success. With that being said, this reaction comes across as very closed-minded and it really didn’t feel like you ever gave the message of the song a chance to breathe, suffocating it with your own rhetoric. I would love to see another reaction to this song with a little more listening because, I’m gonna keep it real, this reaction is not it and does not feel like the open-minded song breakdown guru that I love listening to.

I'm not a big Lil Dicky fan but I've been watching your videos for awhile now. This is a miss from you. You're picking the lines that seem to align with how you think of him without listening to the full meaning behind it. I don't understand why you get upset at being called a "RU-vid rapper" but then "painting Dicky in a box" like another comment mentioned. He DID originally want to use it as a stepping stone and then fell in love with hip hop culture and decided to dedicate himself to it. You cam into it with preconceptions and missed all the important parts about him addressing his newfound passion for rap.

He couldn't have been committed before because he was on a farm, no hoop(rap) in sight. He wasn't exposed to it yet once he got exposed to it and loved it it became a commitment. How is it that when people box you in as a RU-vid rapper you get bothered and try to correct that stigma but when Dicky does it and explains why he's not just a funny rapper and how he fell in love with the craft you want to paint him in a box because he wasn't working at it his whole life. THAT'S THE POINT OF THE SONG. He's explaining how he fell in love with hip hop. He LITERALLY has been rapping since a kid and got called up during one of his camps as a kid to rap with 112 (Peaches and Cream, Anywhere, Dance With Me) you cant talk about what he ISN'T when you literally DONT LISTEN to ANY of his songs ESPECIALLY not the ones where he expresses his battle with himself on being a comedian and a rapper because of his passion for rap and how good he is. Scru: "I was a million percent right about what I thought" Also Scru: 0 percent right about what he thought. It just feels like you took a stance and got stuck in it, and completely missed the message of the entire song. Like so many others have said in the comments here, the point isn't that he thinks rap is a joke but wants to be taken seriously. The point is that He didn't know rap was an option. He grew up white, well off, suburban, with a business major(?) and thought that was his path. He chose comedy as a way to be creative and break out of that mold, and in the process found rap. The rap game and penmanship and rhyming is his true calling, it's how he found himself and how he found his passion, and if he didn't stumble into it ironically he wouldn't have even known it was a possibility. He came in late by your standards and the old heads, but at the end of the day he loves and imbues himself within rap, and uses comedy to reach his audience because that's what he knows. The whole Russle Westbrook comparison just seems to go over your head here. Much love and respect Scru I've been a viewer since the basement days, but you gotta get out of this pocket you've rooted yourself into regarding Dicky "not being committed to the culture"

People really be mad that someone who's good at rapping, isn't wholly invested in the rap culture lol. I've never seen anyone from other areas that require a certain talent get mad at someone who comes into that same area and started to dominate even though they only did it as a hobby. Who gives a shit. Rap is about rap. The flow, the storytelling ability, the lyrical proficiency.. It doesnt matter if they grew up trapping on the strets, hustling, going to underground rap battles.

Lil Dicky NEVER started rap "to make fun of rap" he utilized rap as a medium for comedy. Those are 2 very different things. For example, Weird Al isn't making fun of MJ or Pop music when he made "I'm Fat." What he did was make a funny song to the same beat.

I still don't think he used rap to get famous in order to do comedy. What he really means is he found a talent that he had, besides comedy, and decided to pursue it first. Being able to do his show Dave and being a comedian is just the cherry on top for him. He was pretty famous years before Dave even came out, and he was still dropping a lot of music at the time even after he got notoriety. I think he accidentally fell in love with being a rapper when he had no idea that's what he'd do. It kind of just happened.

Normally I rock with you scru but on this you're EXTREMELY wrong. You can't cut off the lyrics mid line when he's explaining something and say "he's saying what I said" because he's not. He's expressing that AT FIRST he didn't think he'd ever get big on it. But IF YOU LISTEN like you're trying to say people are not, then you'd understand he's saying before he realized he was good he didn't want to do it but focus on his craft training and developing a love for the culture and became invested. People's issues with you in regards to Lil Dicky is you brush over him with what you think he should do when other artists you listen to have done similar things in reverse. Someone ORIGINALLY INTENDING to do something doesn't mean that they're a bad person, univested, or don't care about the culture. You can't cut lyrics off midway thinking you were able to fully get the gist. LISTEN TO THE LYRICS FULLY. Idgaf if you pause or not but pay attention bruh.

I’ve never seen someone so confident while being so off the mark. I like Scru and I like Lil Dicky. I feel he’s hiding behind the word culture and the ambiguity behind it. I just find it distasteful that he’s brushing his commitment and dedicated to hip hop because of a few bars. Letting them dictate his perception from that point.I can’t speak too much on his personal life, but Dicky probably wasn’t surrounded with hip hop as much as Scru and other typical hip hop artist which is probably true. Doesn’t mean he didn’t find his place within it once he did discover that part of him. Yes he’s comical but that doesn’t mean he’s making a joke of hip hop either. He’s just expressing himself as he is which is what any art form should be about. I don’t think you can be as good as dicky without working and studying hip hop and you can’t dedicate that much commitment without a certain level of passion and love. Just because it isn’t expressed the typical way doesn’t mean the love for the culture isn’t there. It isn’t just hip hop, people sometimes take longer to others to find what they were meant to do in life. Just because they haven’t known since they were young doesn’t discredit they’re life/career there.I hope Scru reacts to more and realize more where Dicky is with all this. Love for both Scru and Dicky, Dicky is Westbrook on a Farm no doubt about it. He was meant for it.

scru, this is the first time i’ve ever seen you miss the mark completely. you had this built up narrative in your head and ran with it throughout the video. you were not a million percent right. this song is explaining how dicky realizes how his love for rap grew exponentially as he started to become better and better, and how despite having a life made out for him already with a college degree and everything, chose to go the hip hop route because IT WAS HIS CALLING. the whole culture thing from an outsiders standpoint could theoretically make sense why u would get that impression, but listening to this song you should have realized that dicky was explaining that it evolved into his true passion and love for the art of hip hop. The russel westbrook analogy was fantastic in that he didn’t compare himself to the goats of lebron or kobe, but someone who is considered great at what they do and is nothing to dismiss in the game. and the idea of westbrook stumbling upon basketball and grinding his way to become recognized is exactly what dicky did. all in all you are too hung up on the preconceived perceptions you have of dicky to allow yourself to see the actual meaning of this song. sorry scru but it actually left a bad taste in my mouth you missed the mark, all love tho and keep grinding u still my fav reactor fr.

Then also "That’s at least what I thought/'Til I clawed and scratched the pen 'til I saw a line draw/Then I could've let bygones be bygones/But I really wanted to rhyme till my line drawn." YOU missed the entire point of the song because you were too busy hating on him pausing on these exact lines. Like, i love you Scru, but every single comment here makes it clear you missed this one. Scru I love you but just say what you really mean man. You just don't like him. You dont like him because he didn't choose hip hop first. Even though that argument is completely nonsensical because unless you're documented like someone like Mac Miller or Eminem whom weve either heard or seen actual documentation or people say as early as a child has wanted to become a rapper or hip hop artist, you WOULDNT choose hip hop first. Every young kid when first asked what they want to do when they grow up is always going to choose the tried and true answers and none of those are even close to "I'm going to be a rapper". So what you're really saying is "I don't like him because he didn't choose rap as his first love or his profession" which means YOU aren't part of the culture nor 99% of rappers ever since likely your first answers to that question WASNT rap. So what are we saying here? That just because he didn't choose rap as a teenager like most rappers pivot towards and away from things like drug dealing or a shifty job or to escape an abusive relationship or household that THAT Is what makes someone like him less cultured and yet he's able to out rap 90% of all rapper ever? That because he left a really good desk job and a pretty comfortable life to do it means hes worth less in the hip hop world than X person who you DO think is cultured? What are we saying here? I absolutely hate the notion that a rapper isn't "a part of the culture" or "cultured enough" because either they aren't black enough, weren't poor enough, don't speak right, aren't this or that. Those reasons have less to do with whether someone is cultured enough and more to do purely with someone's disdain towards someone personally. Whether that be jealousy, hate, anger, or any other virility one could have for another person's ability or perceived commitment to anything. At the end of the day he DID choose hiphop and ever since hasn't swayed in his commitment with it not one bit.

You’re sounding a little like Lord Jamar when he was salty about Eminem. The beautiful thing about rap (poetry in music) is that anyone can catch the bug and can become great at it. Just because they aren’t from the streets or didn’t grow up around hip hop but found it later in life doesn’t make them invalid to the culture. Dicky talks about the culture and his appreciation and love for it all the time. He is a huge fan and has been since he was a kid. Just because he has a different way of thinking and didn’t grow up in the streets and because he doesn’t want to be fake doesn’t make him any less dedicated to it. Drake didn’t grow up in the streets, he isn’t a hard, forged in fire gang banger who made it but he sure does rap like he is though and that’s phony as hell. I like Drake but he’s phony when it comes to him always talking about popping off and killing his “ops” and shit. Dicky talked about sneaking NWA and wu tang when he was a kid and always loved rap and the culture but never thought he could do it or be good at it and one day he was just goofing around and made up a funny rap song but never thought it would be anything it was just for fun because HE LOVES RAP, he didn’t make a funny country song, and then he got good feedback on it and he started to think maybe he actually could be good at this thing he loves and so he started to put his heart and soul into it. But because he is corny and white and soft he knows he will never be one of the greats so he has leveraged his rap into other things but plenty of people do that, ICE T, ICE CUBE, 50 cent, and the list goes on. So to say you don’t like him because his dedication to the culture isn’t there is corny on your part. Still love you though lol. Just saying I think you’re wrong on your reasoning. Now you can not like him because of his style all day long but the other stuff is just looking at it the wrong way and not knowing the full story.

But then he started playing for fun, got really good and became passionate about it. In the end thinking back on how his life would have been if he had stayed at the farm. Yes, Lil'Dicky started rapping as a joke, but it grew in to a passion. Life is like that for most people. Screw, I have the upmost respect for you, and most of your hip-hop opinions, but I sincerely believe that you would not have the same view of him if he was black, and this is part of the issue, people wonder why a lot of artists that aren't black feel they have to overcompensate, this is why, because they feel they're never going to be accepted unless they do those things, unless they are super involved in everything, when there are a lot of those of your own race that aren't super committed, let's be completely honest. He's opening himself up, he's speaking, honestly, and yet he's still facing criticism, it's kind of sad to witness. This makes me think would you feel the same way if the artist was native American, Polynesian, Korean, something like that, part of me thinks that you would.
