Sorry ashpar & R. Greagor to Purple Rain on your Xtopher Tracy's Parade (yes I'm a major fan) but as Lil JR said above in the video on Jellybean writing the drum patterns (uncredited), Prince did not write everything; about 80-90%. Morris and the band had a hand in 'The Time' debut and 'What Time Is It?' but Prince as the star who signed them to WB took all the credit, basic industry pay-your-dues business-style. If fact 'PartyUp' on Prince's 'Dirty Mind' album was originally written by Morris Day, do the research.

Prince played every instrument on The Times first two albums (including this song) with a couple of contributions from Dr Fink & Lisa Coleman( ice cream castles and pandemonium had some input from different band members but still mostly composed by PRN) To give it a live feel he would usually have Morris calling out members of the band (like jellybean and terry) during the track. This track stays timeless as no one was doing these kind of compositions during that era.
@reimourrpower9357
@reimourrpower9357 7 лет назад
Pardon my Purple Raining on your Christopher Tracy's Parade (yes I'm a fan too) you're only part right. PRN wrote & played the MAJORITY of the songs on those albums but took all the credit in standard pay-your-dues-new-artist style. Morris as a master percussionist reportedly played a great amount of The Time's drums originally and if you can convince me that anyone but Jesse Johnson played guitar on 'What Time Is It?' (especially 777 & The Walk), I'll link you to some rare PRN exclusives...

I like and appreciate the way you played that. I play drums and over the years have seen people try and cover that song.. I'm no professional by no means but I have a pretty good ear I can tell that some have kinda came close. If you revert back to the original you can tell that they're missing something or not quite on it like the original. And I struggled with it quite a bit back in the day trying to emulate that on drums. But I would say that out of all the ones I've previously seen and heard I think you're pretty much on it. Like you say that wasn't done on a trap set but it was electronically put together so that makes it a little difficult to really replicate on a set because there's a good bit going on and the drummer only has two hands.

John, you broke that shit down, to the inch, and you played it to. Back in the 80's when i played drums, i told all the drummers, here in Chicago, south side that, the beat was over dubbed because, the bass, and snare drum and hi hats, are playing one beat, with another pattern, on top of the hi hats it's vary syncopated, but still 4/4 1&2&3& hit on 1 Lil' John, good work looking forward, to more instruction, even though i don't play drums, anymore just program them, and play bass now.

The entire drum track had to be programmed, not just the Hi-hats. The clap sound is the Linn drum as well. The decay on the snare is too short to be a real snare played live over the Linn drum machine. Pay attention to the song... you never hear any snare rolls, flams or anything a real drummer would do playing live. It was hilarious when this song was originally out, seeing drummers driving themselves batty trying to mimic a drum machine- because they were clueless that wasn't a real drummer!
