Honestly I think they're just differently timed hate campaigns. For Lil Nas this look isn't particularly new, he's been performing like this since his last album drop in 2021. There was a whole massive satanic panic surrounding him when his album dropped a few years ago, the loud minority has just died down on that one. Sam Smith has a little bit more of a battle now that they have to deal with the homophobic crowd Lil Nas dealed with, as well as the so called 'gender critical' crowd because of the fact that Sam is nonbinary. Not to mention the crowd of low-life bullies who will try and find any valid way of criticizing a plus size celebrity they don't like.
