I feel like the song has an overall message which is that everything starts with your parents. it's starts with her mom being with the wrong guy, escalates and in the end she ruins her while life one step at a time being a result of the last. then it shows how different things would be through simple changes starting with her mom. it also shows very similar scenes with very different moods to show how everything adds up.
