This cover is probably the closest to the original, even though it's on a violin. She has managed to capture that dark and indescribable feeling of Hazel.
@The Stupid will Inherit the Earth You don't know what classical music style is if you think this was an example of it. And you don't know what feelings are if you didn't hear any heart in this. From that I can assume you will inherit the earth.
i have been listening to this song since I was a child. I am 53 years old, now. Maggot Brain has always been my favorite song of all time. I am really picky about who covers it. I have never heard a version that I liked outside of the original. Even when Kidd Funkadelic plays it, it is to fast. The faster you play it, the more you kill the emotion. Well, this lady understands this song. She knows it is all about soul and heart.....not technical ability. It is a song that reveals the inner-quality of human existence. Ms. Haydn, great job!
Feel you, i was 16 and Maggot Brain was inside the One Nation album. It was about 6 of us in a friends room smokin'. The room went deathly quiet. I saw things. I see them whenever i hear it. I saw them listening to this.
Eddie Hazel used to put a crazy amount of relief (bow) in his Strat necks knowing they would play stiffer. He felt he could only say everything he wanted to say with a guitar if it was fighting him a little bit. But I don't like this cover of the song or any cover of it for that matter.
I get what your saying man i really do but have you seen mike mccready of pearl jams version. Personally my favourite cover and honestly i might like it more than the original. obviously im not putting hazel down in anyway as hes the genius who created this masterpiece i just feel as though mccready manages to capture the exact same emotion and for some reason i tend to come back to that version more than the original.
Great to hear that you enjoy and understand this song so deeply. Reading your text gave me goosebumps, cause I also adore this song a lot! Do you know the Tribute of John Frusciante (Before the Beginning)? Would love to know what you think about this one :)
@@felixplaza823 since shes not playing an electric violin and it's only mic'd it's more likely the mic is being run through a wah pedal so the actually violin isn't being wah'd but the sound of it going through the mic. But yup if its electric and has a cable you can definitely run it through any sort of effect
She used her incredible violin skills to do a cover of one of the most iconic, emotional rollercoaster rides of electric guitar tracks ever recorded and she absolutely killed it. The violin is probably the only instrument that can produce the same emotions, the sadness and the love and power as the electric guitar. What a wonderful job she did bringing all that out. Eddie Hazel is in Heaven giving mad respect and love to Lili for showing her respect to him and his musical talents.
@@saigonproducer ---- Art is subjective. I'm not saying your opinion is wrong, but I don't think I personally could pick one guitar track, or solo, or bass groove or drum track, or song and say it is THE best. There are too many different styles, and genres, to say that one is the best. I think it would be limiting one's self to think that there is nothing better than one of anything. Especially music. Or any art for that matter. I appreciate your reply, seriously.
This song was created in the studio when Parliment Funkadelic George Clinton, surrounded Eddie Hazel with speakers and told him to play as if he just heard his mother died. Lili Haydn captured that sorrow
That is correct, at that time Funkadelic were into some serious drugs. If you were tripping and someone told you that, wouldn't you play your mind/heart out........incredible......(~);-}
The first half is "Imagine your mother is dying" the 2nd part where it sounds super intense is "Now imagine your mother HAS died." The music is like a conversation of everything he wanted to say and SHOULD have said/ but missed. I can't believe the classic they got from the method used.
Ayman Brown Getting my colleagues off Bieber and the likes... got them listening to the original and this on the doobie.. They are still picking up their jaws from the floor.
she did a rendition of my all time favorite song, and nailed it emotionally. mind blowingly good. this isn't a bullshit cover, this is a real rendition. look at her passion. i would bet even eddie hazel himself would appreciate the heck out of this.
I always enjoy violin solos but from first note it was hard holding back the tears i've heard this a hundered time's by Eddie Hazel she nail it. She brought the funk. How in the fuck can you play Maggot brain on a violin. Amazing. Can't stop playing it over and over.
the perfect vibration. it caused me to sob. you can power a whole city with the energy coming from this. this is probably the most beautiful song i have ever heard. like literally
I love that other people call Maggot Brain an "interpretation". That's the term I use because everybody's inner sould hears it differently, adn expresses it differently.....
Yeah, like who are these people who give it a thumbs down? What is wrong with them? But then I could say that about millions of people who voted in the last election...
As I was listening to this, I noticed that many of the notes she was playing had a Wah-Wah sound to them, and I immediately asked myself how in the hell that could be, when she is playing a violin ? Well, upon putting on some glasses, and then watching the video very closely, I could see that her violin was plugged in to a Guitar Amplifier, and in between the connection of the violin to the Amp, she had plugged in a Wah-Wah pedal. Now, that's what I call Genius !
I absolutely adore Eddie Hazel's talent as a guitarist and maggot brain moved my soul...however, this rendition is beautiful...she knows the frequency he was tuned to!
this song always hits me in a cosmic kind of spiritual way. Like it just resonates with my soul in an indescribable way for me. it'd so much deeper than just music, it's kind of an existential experience
It almost goes beyond what music is. Two other songs that remind me of this are Roy Buchanan - The Messiah Will Come Again and John Frusciante - Wayne. :)
Yes, I too have transcended the physical plane of existence and am now floating through the great vastness of the spiritual realm where there is nothing but beauty and horror, hope and despair, love and hate, and they all live with harmony without chaos, AND B I G G A Y.
Such passion & raw energy! What a tear-jerking Eddie Hazel tribute-Lili performing it on violin further heightens its intensity!! Rest in peace, Eddie, 4ever funkin on! J.C.Jam.
this is by far my favourite version of my favourite song of all time. Words simply cannot describe this beautiful artistry being put on display for us to witness, experience, appreciate, and vibrate with. This is music. This is art. This is life, death, rebirth, and the entire universe. This song in particular speaks to me in a way that is so mind blowingly, soul resonatingly, impossible to describe. If music resonates with your soul like it does for us, you'll know exactly what I mean and I feel when I say this. This isn't JUST music, this is a spiritual experience, and I whole heartedly believe it and value it as such and
OMG She evoked the spirit of Eddie Hazel. I know Michael Hampton is truley amazed and appreciative of how close she came to the original effort. I had to swith on the surround sound and fully absorb her version. OUTSTANDING! Lili ... From a real life funkateer!
WOW! I barely leave youtube comments, but i just had to on this one. Never knew one of my all time favourite songs would sound so good with a violin. She was so emotional that I could barely budge through the whole video!
UNBELIEVABLE ... Play that thang Gal...She makn the violin make sounds that i never thought it could...Im sure Mr Eddie Hazel is somewhere with a tear in he eye an a smile on he face... 🤘🤘🤘
WMMS in Cleveland played this every Saturday at 1am. I used to be out in my 57 Chevy and would just pull over in the dark and listen to Maggot Brain..ahhhh..good times
+soh loh - Check out the duo album "Love, Devotion, Surrender" with Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin. Very spiritual music. No version of Maggotbrain, but I think you would like the sounds. Here is a story about it. www.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/Features/en-us/When-Carlos-Santana-Met-John-McLaughlin.aspx
Right on man LDS is incredible, about to check out your link.I'm wondering have you heard "Illumination's" with Santana and Alice Coltrane? That shit brought me to a greater perspective of "Devadip's playing.I think most people only think of the 1st album and Abraxas and don't really know his "fusion" side.Peace
I bought the album cosmic funk when it came out in the early 70s because March to the witch's castle and I'm a true lover of maggot brain just turned 50. Thanks the song . Love it 50 years. Thanks to Lili Haydn for a second helping now I have both and I love both. I start every day with a dose of Maggot Brain George Clinton turned 80 the same day Maggot Brain turned 50 years old
I agree, the unwinding cadence of this piece brings you to your knees. To have a woman play it makes all the sense too... As it builds, you raise yourself and look to the Heavens. There IS a purpose, and the Great Mother watches over us all. ❤
I am a great fan of the original. This is an amazing interpretation. I am impressed that she got all those sounds out of a violin. I would like to see a longer version, maybe a nice studio cut. I hope this song lives forever.
What a wonderful rendition of this Funkadelic Classic. She knows what it's about. Like George Clinton ever asked Eddie Hazel: i want you to think of the worst thing that couldt happen to you. Like the original, this rendition of Lili Haydn brings tears to your eyes..
Eddies solo has always touched me, in a deep, dark place. Lili Haydn captured this feeling immensely. I am crying from emotion as I type this. Just like every time I listen to the Original Album vinyl of Eddie. Oh Lord baby jesus, WTF?
Absolutely amazing/ phenomenal Lili, u gave me goose bumps u beautiful thing, I love u, I can listen to this wonderful song again & with renewed interest thank you
OMG! I must have been too drugged out in the 70’s not to hear about this song. It just touches the soul with so much emotion. And watching her play, to make the violin speak to me!? Visceral, sublime, soulful, amazing!
Greg Perez --- you have to listen to Maggot Brain by Funkadelic, the original track with the man , Eddie Hazel, who is the original guitar player on this amazing song. Lili does an incredible rendition on the violin in this video, but the original track and there are a couple live recordings that Eddie Hazel takes the listeners on an emotional rollercoaster. His guitar playing is among the greatest of all the rock and r&b and funk legends that got way more attention and fame. And if you are still getting high, I recommend getting high and listening to Maggot Brain a couple times then again when sober. LOL
I saw this for the first time about 4 years ago and it still amazes me. I've never seen a wah on a violin and I've never heard a violin cry so much. This is truly a masterpiece
This is amazing, what a performance. Never heard a violin like that. So rare, so unconventional and pure. Maggot Brain is one of the best guitarsolo's. Now one of the best unconvential violin solo's. What a woman. She must be great everywhere. Love her!
This is the most beautiful piece of music I’ve ever seen performed. Actual tears rolling down my cheeks. And it takes a lot to make me cry. I don’t think I’ve ever been affected by a piece of music like that, Jesus Christ...
There's life before hearing Maggot Brain, with all in complexities and confusion, then there's life after hearing Maggot brain, with all it's clarity......
