They are a female-fronted band consisting of all siblings’ ages 14-23: Lead vocalist- Melody (Melodio), Lead guitarist - Samuel, Drummer - Abigail, Bassist - Ethan & Keyboardist - Justin. They began covering famous/popular rock and metal songs by artists such as Dio, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and more, released their first EP “Chain of Thorns” in 2019, released their full length album of 13 original songs titled "Queen of Hearts" in 2020. Most recently, they debuted "Madness" - a brand new original full length album featuring "Carousel", "Rise Up", "Rebel Girl", "Somber Cry", "Anabella" and more. Thank you. Good examination of the Band and the factors involved in their success. On the change in style.. I'm rolling with it. As you noted, they're young and artists.. gotta let the blood flow a bit and the creative side wander. It's interesting to me that Melody in particular is also a traditional artist - brush and canvas, etc and that it seems to run in the family a bit. Same is true with myself so maybe I Identify with Melody on that level in terms of cutting her all the slack she needs to play, stretch and put her ideas out there. She's miles ahead of me on that score in that at her age, I'd have been terrified of standing on a stage. As to musical stretching.. I was never a metal fan. That was always my brother.. I don't know that they converted me to Metal; but, they certainly gained me as a fan. My tastes are eclectic; so, 7 Nation army wasn't a stretch to me.. especially considering that they took what was a nothing little song of fair weight and ratcheted into a hard rock version that makes the original sound like a concept tape. I've joked that the White Stripes wrote the song for Liliac. I don't listen to as much music these days as I used to; so, I hadn't actually heard 7 nation until Liliac performed it. If it hadn't been for them I might not have known it even existed. I heard their cover before hearing the original. And Frankly, the original is a big let down after hearing the Liliac version. They really did upscale and own the song. On covers in general.. not easy to do. It's a fine line between karaoke and putting a lasting stamp on someone else's work. I remember back in the day when "God gave Rock and Roll to you" came out. No, it wasn't Kiss. The original song was recorded by a Christian Rock band and their original is still better in my mind than the effort by Kiss. Understanding the origin of the song, Kiss never could sell it to me.. it came off like a conjob. That and I think their cover is wanting in terms of performance in comparison to the original group. So you can literally be amazing with instruments and highly skilled and still bomb on a cover. Liliac has used the covers to advertise themselves.. very wisely. When you're not on a label, you need to advertise and I don't think they could have picked a better method. I caught Crazy Train while on vacation some months back.. it's only been months but feels like I've been a fan for years. Wild ride. Digressing, Crazy Train caught my attention on a recommend or something via youtube.. can't remember for sure as I was doing other things and just scanning for covers when I saw it. Had to give it a listen even though also not an Ozzy Osborne fan.. at all. That'd be my brother. I do like to hear covers though as a personal intrigue and as something that hopefully doesn't distract too badly when I'm listening as background noise while doing artwork. Rekt. Once I hear them start, my attention was diverted. I had 4 days remaining of an extended vacation and it was mostly spent listening to these 'kids' and wondering to myself - 'How have I never heard of them before.. how do they play and sound like *this* and aren't number one on the best sellers and all over the radio. Fanged, done.. educated and understand. So, again, thank you. One last note, and I'd be remiss if I didn't put it in. The family has mostly done it all themselves.. Hard work begets success if the public wants what you're selling. To me it's a modern American success story defined. And if they weren't independent, I don't know if they'd still be there.. I have the feeling a label would have wrecked them by now, a show like American Idol would have chewed all the energy out of them (as well as all their profits).. They're an underdog worth fighting for to this point. And they're just plain fun.

One factor you can't mention until you meet the band. Liliac is a band that cares about their fangs. Liliac is always willing to meet fangs and they don't make you feel like a fan they make you feel like a friend. They remember factors about their fangs. My answer to your question is not unless they change things up a bit. You cannot be the future, while living in the past. Their musicianship is not at issue. There are two things that are weighing these kids down. Firstly, they refuse to step away from covers. Second, they are playing music of a bygone generation (to which I belong), without adding anything new to it. Instead of echoing the past while moving forward, they are in a time warp. They need to find a voice of their own, and use it to say something they find to be meaningful. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with what they are doing. They will be able to make a living with this approach. There will always be a cruise line or casino willing to hire them. Will they be the future of rock music though? I do not believe so. I am rooting for them. I have bought every original album they have made. 🤘🏻
@psychologyofrock
@psychologyofrock Год назад
Hey Roy! Some great thoughts here. It seems like they are intentionally targeting our generation with their music (younger people aren't going to find songs like "Mistreated" to be sentimental, but older ones will appreciate them) but I agree that new music will be essential to keep fans interested. I think they could continue to keep the older fan base and be successful even without a much of a younger following if they created new music that was still appealing to the demographic they have targeted. There is also a greater chance that they could grow their younger fanbase with new music. Even though cover songs like "Seven Nation Army" are "newer" than many of their other covers, it still from another generation of music. I really love their covers and am part of the demographic they are trying to reach, but to gain mass popularity, you do need a vast amount of original music that is as strong as the covers. I think they have more than enough talent to accomplish this, and if they do, I think they could be a major player in the future of rock. Like you, I am rooting for them!

Welcome to the World of Liliac! I first heard Liliac by chance doing Rainbow in the Dark on the CBS World's Best show. I said to myself that they are really playing. I've missed all the musician bands of my youth. I'm an OTR driver and didn't think much. Then I saw the Clip from AGT and I said, I remember them! I got excited and deep dived. I support 3 bands now. All different genres. They are all musicians too. I sent Liliac a clip of my 3rd band just for inspiration. My soul told me I had to support them. So, I try my best as do the other Fangs. They can change all they want. I sometimes worry about the tamber of MeloDia screams. They have evolved. She's still young in voice. One reactor got upset of MeloDia outfits having cleavage etc. I look at it from this is show biz. My mother in her day headlined in Burlesk dancing to jazz my natural father wrote for her. That was on stage. I didn't see it at home. Lol long analogy. I thought this was great. I don't think they'll sign unless they get a positive contract that doesn't lessen their revenue. Growing up on the pier, they are masters at there merch tables. Hope you do more. Not really sure if this is what u solely do. I enjoyed it. Till next time. Peace. Stay safe. God Speed. FANG 4 LIFE! The Warning might open for Liliac someday. They're good but not in the same league. I think when you watch a Warning video for the first time you're like "Hey wow... 3 girls? They're good!". @@AKCobra1120 I agree that they are not in the same league, but I differ with you, liliac is mainly a covers band and their little own music has failed to shine, the warning is a band much more recognized for its own music that has shone by itself.when you listen to liliac you listen to a good cover band but when you listen to the warning you listen to a new band with its own sound and style that hooks you. Leaving personal preference aside, the warning tours internationally, plays with bigger bands, opening in stadiums for guns and roses, the killers, foo fighers, def Leppard, being invited by Metallica for the black album, among many other things.and is listened to between 7 and 8 times more than liliac on Spotify, so it's absurd that the warning opens for liliac, liliac should open for the warning. they are not in the same league liliac is good but the warning could become the best band in the world and if that doesn't happen at least it will be a legendary band at the level of the best.

@@kaosdmort757 Well I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I think the warning may have been around longer than Liliac, so they would have more original material. It's not like the warning doesn't do their share of covers. I don't know nearly as much about them as Liliac, but everything I've heard from them has been a cover (if you have a favorite song or two by them please point them out. I doubt I'll change my mind on the ranking of the two bands, but I'll certainly give them a chance to do so). Liliac already has 2 albums out and are working on a third, so while they started as a covers band they are certainly progressing away from that. One thing I'm sure we can agree on is that it's great that we have two great up and coming bands to argue about :) Reminds me of the Kiss vs. Aerosmith arguments we had back in school. My concern is the age of Liliac’s audience. I saw them in February in Hollywood. I am not exaggerating when I say in a club of around 400 people, my 24 y/o son was the ONLY person there I saw under 50 and I was looking. In May I saw their peers, The Warning at a club a mile away (The Troubador) and while there was a significant over 50 presence, they had a lot more fans in there 20s and 30s. Italian rock band, Maneskin, also quite young, all in there early 20s, have audiences filled with screaming teenagers. This is obviously the ideal for a relevant rock band. I hope Liliac can attract younger fans
@psychologyofrock

Really great point, and I agree. It almost seems like they are trying to target an older demographic. For example, the new cover "Mistreated" is a song that only older people would be familiar with and have an emotional attachment to. Younger fans might find it to sound outdated. It's a classic, but without an attachment to it, younger fans might not "get" it. I think if they focused on original music that would appeal to a wider range of ages, their fan base would increase significantly. They have the talent!

I think the main 2 things that would get in their way is them being Independent as Record Labels can help you get big concert venues/tours as well as on the Radio aka Mainstream. I think the Changes in style and their theatrics/cheese won't be things that get in their way or at least not for long.

They're becoming a bit of a two headed monster (in a good way). Their awe inspiring covers got them noticed and built a fan(g) base that crowds into venues to see them, and their obviously very capable of putting out amazing originals as well. That's a path for them to get radio play. Classic rock stations don't play covers unless it's an original artist who's already well known (think Joan Jett doing Crimson and Clover). Something like Sail Away though? That's contemporary enough to make it on the radio. They're fine being independent while they're building a catalog. The Fangs will keep showing up at the concerts, and they'll be financially sound. Meanwhile, their stack of originals will grow. Even if they don't have a recording company give them a worthwhile offer, they'll probably start to see some air time and, if not, they'll almost certainly become iTunes warriors. Remember, bands like Black Sabbath were never big on charting, but they performed incredible shows in sold out arenas and became rock gods. These days, it's selling on the music services instead of selling albums, but it's just a different lane on the same highway. As long as they stay close as a family, they can make a good living playing music for absolutely adoring fans for as long as they want to.

Great analysis. So right on the nostalgia and the emotional attachment there is to keeping that rock and metal alive. If you are a fan of rock/metal you almost feel personal validation by a new generation playing songs you have loved so many years. Their age is not a negative. It is impressive that they are so damn good. The changing look is healthy and prevents stagnation, they need to always return to their signature look, though after flirting with changes. Melody cutting her hair was hard to take, but only because it was SOOO long and truly epic. Her shorter hair and color change was attractive and fun, but it is just that their Vamp Metal look is just so appealing. I approve of the changes and experimentation, change is refreshing and potentially pulls in another audience. Just keep returning to what started it all. I love the loving family dynamic. That wholesomeness makes you believe that the good guys can indeed win. It is difficult not to root for them. Along that vein, I don't think there is true danger of a Partridge Family type of discrediting. Their talent is the first source of immunity. The main strength that will fight off this potential obstacle is the power of their music and those fierce unchained vocals that just keep impressing anybody that is a fan of their kind of music. You can feel the power that you are hearing. It is what draws people to metal to begin with. Liliac is a gift that their fans savor with appreciation.

MeloDio's voice has blown me away!! "Close my eye's forever" & "Not Afraid" are a great example of what I'm talking about, her high note screams just give me goosebumps!!! Another great talented person is "Taj Farrant"! He's 13 and be warned... Your mind will literally explode!! That kid was born with a guitar in his hands!! This is different and welcomed! Thank you for giving us such an intelligent and precise breakdown of Liliac and the rock world in general. I saw them LIVE for the first time in July after listening to them for over 3 years. Take it from an old rocker chick from the 60s, these kids blew my mind and I couldn't even come down off the ceiling for hours after. Papa Liliac asked us what we thought and I told him I couldn't even speak. That made him grin from ear to ear. You MUST see them when they tour again next year. i can't tell you what it's like to have MeloDia's screams shake the entire building when they open with Not Afraid. Which btw you have to listen to their OMV of that song. Anyway thanks for your really great love for the kids. Rawk on and Rawk hard!

I discovered Liliac not through youtube, but actually at a Loverboy concert I went to. Had never heard of Liliac. Liliac opened for Loverboy and I was so hooked. I went home after the concert and binged-watched all of their videos. Been a huge supporter ever since. Also, if this band had been around in the 80's (I graduated high school in 1985), they would have been one of the top rock bands in the country filling huge stadiums on tour. Easily. Also, there have been many family rock bands that have been successful: VanHalen, Heart, Allman Brothers to name a few. Liliac shouldn't be discredited by people for being a family. Liliac is keeping rock and metal in the U.S. alive and Melody is the best female rock singer in ages.

I am an Australian music lover and at 78yrs probably one of Liliac's oldest Fangs , I discovered them while playing with my new I pad which my kids bought me for father's day I was trying to see what Reactors were all about and watched the first one I came across , it featured a reaction to this family rock band performing on Santa Monica pier playing Crazy Train a Black Sabbath song which I loved even though I never could understand what Ozzie was singing about , simply put I was gobsmacked , the next song I heard them play was Holy Diver then an original Liliac song Chain of Thorns ,and iwas Fanged . Having grown up at the birth of Rock n Roll I have been privileged to witness most of the bands that achieved success and quite a few who were one hit wonders and Liliac is definitely in the first category . I love them not only for their music but for the fact that they are genuinely nice people who are fiercely independent and writing and producing their own songs as well as performing fangtastic tribute covers some of which are definitely better than the original Whitestripes Seven Nation Army and Joan jetts Hate Myself For Loving You just 2 of them . As to not being backed by a label they have been offered a recording contract that tied them up for 5 yrs for 1% of whatever they earned , no matter how you look at it that is an abomination of a deal . I've been on the fringe of the music industry through the merchandising stream and have witnessed artists and bands ripped off mercilessly by our local Labels God only knows what American corporations would do to them . .I'm sorry I'm waffling on but I'm old and have a captive audience , thank you for a well presented and thought out analysis of my favourite band , keep up the good work Fang4life RORH

I've been following Liliac since their days on the Santa Monica pier. Have you seen the video of Stewart Copeland jamming with them. I have to admit I am a fan of their original "presentation" and haven't really jumped on the bandwagon of the experimentation with new looks. I will say, however, that they have such a solid fan base that they've been able to get away with it without much controversy. Time and time again we've seen bands veer from the path that made them famous and they fade away with the sunset. When they finally started achieving some real success as a wholly independent band I thought "this is the band I've been waiting for since the early 90s". I worked for WEA in the early 90s and quickly grew to hate the industry with a passion. I walked away from it and it wouldn't be the last time I walked away from an industry that lacked a moral compass. This was before the internet was in everyone's pocket. I hoped and prayed that a day would come when artists would no longer have to be slaves to the music "biz" and then one day by chance I discover Liliac. I thought they are the ones, they have the potential to go it alone. Yes I was a fan of the original Vampire (Ann Rice style) look and hated to see it go but it proved that this band had what it took to change without being forgotten. Now it's up to us, the fans, to keep supporting them and help them show the world that you don't have to sign your soul away to entertain the world. Your take on them was pretty on point from my perspective. I just hope they keep turning down label deals so we can finally put the last nail in the coffin of a disgusting industry that treats people like products.
@psychologyofrock
@psychologyofrock Год назад
Hey! I definitely agree that artists should not be treated or manufactured as products. I think Liliac has the raw talent to gain much more popularity, and I think more original music would definitely help. The covers help to get attention, but I'd love to see more of their own creations. I liked the vampire look as well, but I think it is important that they figure out who they are for themselves. I agree however, that veering from the original path can be risky. Glad you enjoyed the analysis!

It's been years since I've been excited about a new rock/metal band. I'm not suggesting that other bands aren't talented. There are some extremely talented bands out there. It's just the musical gimmicks aren't for me. One might be a woman with a beautiful voice singing opera like to metal music. Let me put it this way. I love pizza. I love gummies. Do I want gummies on my pizza? No. Another is is (and I'm for a good scream if that's all it is) the death metal style incoherent screaming that seems be getting more prevalent. Again, do I want an angry person who's screaming incoherently on my pizza? No. For an old school rocker, finding Liliac is like finding gold.

Hey Nena, very nice analysis. Besides the obvious ( being a family which kind of builds in a support factor very few have) I think there are four main factors that help drive LILIAC. The first being that they are all very talented musicians and as you mentioned are still very young and they will continue to improve. Melody’s voice. I honestly think that when you can really play music and then add a unique quality like voice like Melody you can really catapult yourself. There is a very good reason why the Enter Sandman cover has over 11 million views. Melody’s voice is on total display and if that is your first experience to LILIAC then it’s like “What the hell did I just watch, WOW!” Along with how well Sam plays guitar adds to the intrigue. As you watch more you see just how talented Abby is at drums. Moving to a double kick has helped as well and it’s awesome to see a bad ass hard hitting woman on drums that is having allot of fun. Ethan bass playing is the fastest improvement and it is very noticeable. Another factor is their song writing. Their original music is much better than I originally thought it was. So much so I wish they would play more of their music as I think on some level the covers are starting to hurt them just a bit. Once their 3rd album comes out I believe in a few months I am hoping their focus will be on their own music especially when it comes to video distribution… because their own music is actually so damn good. I mean they have a few songs that are very good but because they do covers so well I think they still need to play the covers live so they can’t play some of their less known originals. The last one is they are grounded. Meaning they are very active with their fans. They are active on updates as updates are frequent. They do interviews, even with those of basically a small audience. Being a family rock band that is approachable, friendly, humble and kicks butt on stage is very appealing.

Bravo, Nina! I thoroughly enjoyed your commentary & analysis. I find your comments more reliable than many I see because you put much thought into your views and back up your observations with evidence. I've rarely heard commenters take a psychological approach to why given artists are popular and how they connect with listeners. Your comment about Liliac appealing to many older listeners is certainly true for me. I just turned 68 years old. Liliac and Plush are at the very top of my favorites list. In the case of both bands, I'm heartened young people their age are interested enough in classic hard rock to make it their life's work. Both Liliac and Plush are brave, in that they play the type music that (unfortunately) is unfamiliar to a huge swath of kids their age. Keep up the superlative work, Nina. I eagerly anticipate your future observations. One suggestion: another group playing in the classic 'hair metal" style is a group from the Netherlands called Cobra Spell. I REALLY think you'll like them. Try their "Midnight Hour." As of the last few months, they're an all-female group, which is also cool. Be well.

I honestly can not recall which specific cover video of theirs I first seen, it was in my YT recommendation list about a year or two ago. I want to say it was one of the Dio covers (Rainbow in the Dark maybe), but I watched like a dozen or more after seeing the first one. So I watched quite a range of covers one after another and was quite impressed. What makes me a fan or do I find really engaging about them. Two things in particular, plus some minor things as well. First of all it is their head banging rock, and Vamp / Goth metal that is rare to see in young bands these days. Second is simply watching them evolve and grow. I would not say they are great musicians .. or at least not yet. They have always been good, but it is awesome to watch and see them grow as they grow and get better. They have gone from being good to really darn and I expect to see even greater things from them in the future. The older three in particular have become really good artists in each their own right and one can argue any one of them are carrying the band. Which is not really true, just more what appeals to each person more I guess, as they are imho becoming all really good musicians. It has been a treat to watch them grow and starting to develop their own style especially when doing covers. Going from early on to just doing good covers, to starting to make each cover their own and developing that style of theirs. But some of the simple things as well. Their high energy, Abigail's infectious and quick to smile, and all the other quirks of their own individuality, to what appears to me like they simply enjoy what they do. While their originals are not what I would say top 100 songs, they have several that are pretty darn good, that just brings me back to the music days of my youth. And for how young they are, I am impressed. I wished I had found them earlier just so that I could have watched them grow better during the time. Edit: great video, and a good analysis. I can see all those viewpoints, even if I might not fully agree with all of them. I did agree with most of them though.

As to their Seven Nation Army cover. I also thought it was just as good as, if not better than the original. Imho that cover was a great cover and done not only well, but done awesomely. It illustrated how good musicians can take a song and make it their own, make it sound like their style. Does it and some of their other changes, both appearance and sound, detract for me? Nope not at all. I expect a band to grow, and especially such a young bad like they are. Good musicians are simply going to express themselves, it is imho what makes great music. While I do admit I kind of loved their old original Vamp style, and their head banging style. Nostalgia. When I seen them change it still made me happy. It meant they were growing and evolving musically. Even if that growth evolves to a style that is not my particular taste, such is life. As artists they should be expressing whom they are, not doing what its audience wants. People change over time, and so do artist musicians. If they perform solely for their fans, with no thought about their own selves, they are going to start feeling negative and potentially end up having bigger issues and likely breaking up. They should be doing what they enjoy. Regardless what career, artists should be no different.

This was a very interesting review. I have heard many good things about them but still have not heard their music. I hope to change that later tonight! :-) I watched your review of The Warning and these two bands have the same back story and protective fan base. Strange how similar they are in so many ways, past and future. As an "older" rock fan, there is a love for good straight-up rock and metal. I think people our age (50s-60s) have been missing that sound for so many years. To see it well crafted and not gimmicky is a breath of fresh air. I plan on becoming a big fan after hearing a few songs. Any favorite recommendations?

@AKCobra1120
@AKCobra1120 Год назад
First off, great analysis! I agree with a lot of what you said, but not everything and I think you might have missed a thing or two. This is probably going to be long because I'm very passionate about this band :). First off, I don't think their age is going to be a problem in terms of fan acceptance, and even if it were kids grow up (as we see them doing before our eyes), and if anyone DID have an issue with their being so young, they'd come around eventually. What I think might be a problem for them is connecting with a younger audience. When I read the comments on Liliac related videos I've noticed that a lot if not most of the comments start with "I'm in my 50s, 60s, or 70s, people who grew up listening to Dio, Ozzy, Steve Tyler, Lemmy, Freddy Mercury, Robert Plant, etc. They're nostalgic for the golden age of Rock, and Liliac is basically a band from that era. The problem is todays generation listens to completely different styles of music. Unless Liliac's popularity turns into some kind of movement back to the days before RU-vid and Autotune they might have difficulty connecting with that group. Secondly one big concern I have is Melody's vocals. Now I think Melody is a generational talent, and if a lot of things go right for them she could turn out to be this generation's Freddy Mercury. That being said, I worry that she's pushing her vocals harder and harder (Just go listen to the Not Afraid remaster if you don't believe me), and I'd hate to see her damage her vocal ability. She obviously has worked hard at learning how to get the most out of her voice, but I still worry that pushing it to the max night after night will take its toll. Time will tell on that one, but she's setting the bar very high, and keeping up with her own standard may prove difficult and possibly damaging. Lastly, I do worry that because they formed this band so young, none of them could possibly have any idea what they want out of life yet. It's like their path was pre=determined, and I do worry a little that they're missing out somewhat on a normal childhood (particularly the two younger ones). Melody I think is doing what she was born to do. Sam as well. Abby is having fun now, but I can see her tiring of the lifestyle and wanting to settle down into a more normal life somewhere down the road. Ethan and Justin worry me the most, as this life was pretty much thrust on them and I wonder what will happen when they're old enough to make life choices. I guess only time will tell on that one. Anyway, sorry this was so long, but these are the things that concern me about Liliac. I think their talent is off the charts (Melody in particular), and I don't think their evolving look or musical experimentation will cause any more than a temporary ripple in the water, if that. The talent is there, and if they can find some way to connect with younger fans, Melody's voice holds up, and Abby, Ethan, and Justin don't decide they'd be happier doing something else then I think Liliac is destined for the Hall of Fame. Yes I went there. I think they're really that good.
@psychologyofrock
@psychologyofrock Год назад
Hi Dave! I think you bring up many valid points. Yes, I agree that the generations nostalgic for rock are the ones finding Liliac. I think there are plenty of younger people that do like rock, but perhaps newer adaptations of it. I do feel that Liliac is intentionally targeting an older demographic, however, which I don't think is necessarily a flaw. There is a need for what they are doing, clearly. I think if they had radio play, more people would find them and be impressed. But I don't think that younger people are ever going to relate to covers of songs like "Mistreated", etc. I think if they do want to attract a younger audience, they need to focus on original material that younger people can relate to - still rock, but showing some innovation of their own. They are young and maybe haven't really figured out what their true own style is yet. They have shown, however, that they are masterful at bringing some of the classics back to life and delivering them, in many cases, with an even bigger punch than the originals. They are tremendously talented. In the case of Melody's voice, I also hope she is taking good care of it. As someone who took voice lessons for over a decade, I can truly appreciate her unique and overwhelming talent. I understand your concern for her vocal longevity. I really think the others in the band are incredibly talented, it is just hard not to get overshadowed by Melody's vocal ability and stage presence. ;) But I think they all are the real deal. Time will tell if they all have their heart in pursuing music professionally forever, but I think they have a bright future if they do! :)

As a long time Metalhead from 1986/87, I have to push back a bit on this myth that Rock and Metal died or is/was a dying genre. It isn't and wasn't. It just lost its mainstream exposure that it had in the 80s with the likes of MTV. Well, as we all know, MTV quit playing music videos about 25 years ago, give or take. So a lot of music styles lost their mainstream exposure. It has only been the mainstream award shows like the Grammy's and MTV Music Awards that have kept certain genres in the mainstream ahead of a lot of others. That's all well and good, but what did happen in the 90s is that Metal never died in Europe. Mainly because they had several different subgenres that America didn't. Europe was the base for Power Metal, Folk Metal, and Death/Black Metal. There was a bit of a Death Metal scene in the US in the 90s, like the Floridian Death Metal scene, but other than that, the Trash Metal, Hair Metal, and what we know now as Traditional Metal (like the aforementioned Dio) scenes did kinda die off. There were a few Thrash bands that remained active thru the 90s, but most either broke up or took a hiatus. Most of the Big 8 Thrash bands continued to put out albums then, but most of the smaller bands disappeared. And on top of that those that did put out albums, they were hard to find in Record Stores. Remember those? But then came the Internet and eventually Amazon, which made it much easier to find music you wanted and get it delivered to your door with the click of a button. Then came RU-vid a few years later which allowed every band to shoot new music videos and distribute them to a worldwide video playing service where everybody could get access to those videos on an On Demand basis. No longer did fans of certain music have to rely on MTV and/or Radio to play their favorite music at certain times a day (ie. HeadBangers Ball, The Rock Block). This wider and freer form of distribution allowed several of the Old 80s bands that went on hiatus to come back and start making music again when it became clear that the main genre of Rock and Metal was back and still very popular. This happened around 2003 or so. And Rock and Metal has been back stronger than ever ever since. My advice to new fans of the genre is, "You just gotta know where to look." And that means that because of the search algorithms modern tech uses, you generally just gotta know a few bands that you may have heard of or liked, and while you're browsing for them, you we I'll get recommended many others. That's how I found most of the bands I collect to this day. Between the Amazon and RU-vid recommended lists, and now Reaction Channels, anyone can find just about anything they want.

Nice analysis. I'm an old school rock and metal guy who remembers when "that cool new band" Iron Maiden released their first album. I was looking at the musical lineup for Sturgis earlier this year and their logo caught my eye. I read the blurb about them and then searched RU-vid. My first Liliac song was the Enter Sandman cover. I was totally blown away. I spent the next five hours going through their catalog. I'm now a big "fang" and plan to catch them live at the first opportunity. I've turned several of my old school buddies onto them too. Their changing look doesn't bother me because the music is still great. I also think Seven Nation Army is much better than the White Stripes original. They turned it into a real rocker. If looks keep someone from enjoying the music, are they really fans anyway? I love that my beloved rock and metal carries on with bands like Ghost and now Liliac. I had almost given up hope.

does anybody else find it concerning that they did not start like a normal rock band? in other words, the formation genesis is that bored teenagers with a love for a certain type of music and an instrument seek out other bored teenagers with instruments and a love for music. they get together, they suck, they get better, they start playing for people and before you know it, they are on tour and stuff. Liliac....Liliac is like a musical thoroughbred. if i understand correctly, the dad tried to be a musical entertainer in his younger days, then fell into musical recording and production. ((young man with wife and kids, need to put a roof over their heads, and food on table)which is cool, thats doing the right thing.)) and then he started working with the kids musical abilities. he hit the jackpot with melodies voice. everybody compares them to the partridge family, but i believe they are closer to the rock/metal jackson 5 or Osmonds. I see crazy potential in them, and so do a lot of other people and we will be keeping an eye and an ear on them over the next couple of decades.
