End of July in a little garden up North - it’s a bittersweet feeling.
The lilies are elegantly blooming, some of them towering over me. I see their blooms as I see the blue skies, it gives such a feeling of awe and calmness. There is a feeling of pride: “I planted these. With my own hands I dug the ground and cultivated a a flower bulb… I nurtured these lilies.”
Wanting, that’s how I would describe my garden. It lacks a bit of organization, a structure or an element. Maybe a firm focal point? Maybe a fountain? It is messy and pretty at the same time.
A famous man once said: “I came, I saw, I conquered.”
I came. I have been admiring flower gardens in catalogs and books for a long time. Someday, I would have one of my own. Someday. Then One day I decided I’ll jump right in and do it, that with no idea how to garden or what to plant. (RU-vid came in handy).
I saw. We visited some friends in Montreal a few years ago, one of them had converted their tiny backyard into a kitchen garden. No wasted space, every inch had a healthy looking plant. With delightful hospitality, the hosts fed us with fresh dishes of vegetables harvested from the garden. I got the honor of harvesting some veggies myself. That home garden was the gateway that opened the world of gardening to me.
Garden centres open in the spring, every grocery store parking lot would have one. A vast array of plant, trees, shrubs… fruits and vegetables… a grand selection of flowers… a dizzying variety of plants for sale are on display.
I conquer. I bought many, MANY plants… fruits, veggies and flowers. Husband bought me some tools, mother in law bought me a greenhouse… my parents helped me dig and design my first garden…
Welcome to the garden, end of July, four summers later.
The garden changes so fast… as fast as summer fades into fall. The lilies, one of the last blooms of summer in my garden are getting into full swing. We have been getting a lot of rain lately and the weather has been cooler than previous summers. Everything has been very pleasant. Just need to take in all that the remaining summer heat can give.
How are you enjoying your garden?
I hope you are staying safe… happy gardening!
Much garden love from my garden to yours,
Maiah
