Was just reminded of this in Paul O'Grady's latest autobiography. I can just about remember this series! Loved late night telly in the 90's.

I remember SO clearly watching this 25 or so years ago - Lily was already v popular with me and - surprisingly - my late Father, who didn’t know it was a man at first and thought it was an actress dressed up like Gayle is. As soon as she walked on drunk and a mess singing “Ode To Billy Joe” my Father exclaimed “fucking hell, Lil!” at the telly and something clicked in me that she was far more than just a drag act (I was in my teens at the time) and was a full, rounded character capable of a lot of different things. I totally understand why Paul killed her off but god I miss her - for many people, Lily (and later Paul) was seen as a positive example of gay ppl by old folk and parents etc in an era when we were being vilified - for all Lily being a whore etc, she had an innocence about her act tbh, even the filthy stuff was still funny to a wide audience - only a small amount was only funny to gay ppl (I remember crying laughing at a Bette Davis joke and my Father was like “wtf?!”).
