The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

She is 58 here and sang wonderfully her whole life. She was born in 1898, was 4'11'' and wore a size 3 1/2 shoe! She had the clearest and purest and most even sound a true coloratura soprano could possess never sounding shrill.

NO WAY! She looks like shes in her 40s and singing like someone in her 20s. Bless!

Though I'm no fan of opera, there's no denying the incredible level of skill and talent on display here. What Ms Pons does with her voice seems beyond human capability, yet she appears to do it effortlessly. I think Johann Strauss would have been honored. What's also notable is the fact that this lovely lady was nearly sixty years old at the time of this performance...

Saw her in Lewisohn Stadium NYC at 9 yrs old! Sold out. Seeing my first live opera singer drew me to love opera ever since! How blessed I was for this experience

I just love opera stars on Sullivan singing popular song, operetta and opera and I really appreciate all your posts of them. "The Blue Danube" is my favorite waltz!

It always fascinates me the way she sings the highest notes (above High-C) by closing her mouth. The opposite of most, if not all sopranos!

She had a vocal crisis in the 30's and my guess is she closed her mouth so she wouldn't scream the highest register. It's hard to push your voice with your mouth closed!

I remember when I was kid hearing her on the Ed Sullivan Show - almost certainly the first opera singer I ever heard. I have no way of knowing if it was this performance I heard - does anyone know if she appeared other times on the show?

Lily Pons NEVER sang anything in German. She refused to sing in that language because of the country's Nazi stance during World War II. Pons was fiercely French.

@@dougronald561 it is an American show. At the time it is usual to sing in another language than the original. Patrice Munsel also sang at the time Adele’s laughing song in English. Roberta Peters too etc. Lily Pons sang The Golden Cockerel in French not Russian. It is not just because of the war. It was what the public expected as it was easier to understand the words/ Lily Pons, Mado Robin etc sang Italian operas in French (Lucia, Rigoletto, Barbiere etc). Same for British opera singers singing French/Italian/German operas in English. Even nowadays at the ENO in London, all the operas are sung in English and it is sometimes odd.
