Lily Tomlin apparently plagiarized her "Ernestine" routine from this gal.

Warner Archive Roku Channel: Scene from "Born to Dance" (1936) movie: telephone operator frakturing English language. Lily Tomlin's Ernestine routine definitely seems to be built off this earlier comedian's skit. Agree? Disagree? Anyway who cares, really, it's hilarious even 79 years later.

IF we're calling it plagiarizing, then the woman in this video plagiarized from actual phone operators of that era - and every other woman who portrayed telephone operators of that era in film and radio. Film, television and radio are FULL of just this type of character. The woman in this film wasn't the first to have a script written for her and directed to act out the character of the classic telephone operator of that era. But yes, as you said, agree or disagree - this particular scene is hilarious 79 years later. Thanks for sharing.

Having worked and lived in Hollywood, no, Lily Tomlin isn't plagiarizing. But, she may surely have been inspired by this scene.

You'd remember Elaine May and her telephone operator with the old one ringa dingy two ringa dingy...Same same...It's a character they play.. Red Skelton Jerry Lewis and John Candy all play the same character...I'll LOL with any and all

Yes. Inspired not plagiarized. Remember Michael Jackson’s moonwalk??? He was not the originator of it. It was Fred Astaire I believe who was the originator. Fred Astaire may have even taught Michael Jackson how to do the moonwalk. In the old, old movie, “Bed knobs and broomsticks” a dance scene with someone doing the moonwalk. Point is.. Lilly Tomlin was inspired, did not plagiarize.

Well, she is funny, and they both play the role of an operator, but the humor is very different. I would never say that Tomlin plagiarized her.

The focus of Lily Tomlin's humor was political satire. Her adoption of the phone operator stereotype's mannerisms and pronunciation allowed her to criticize a very powerful monopoly, and not just make fun of people's way of speaking.

Lilly Tomlin perfected what the older generation of operators/actresses playing the role started if that makes any sense.

Half the telephone operators you see in movies and television from the 30's clear to the 80's talked like this. That's like saying Marcia Wallace plagerized Carol Kester from somewhere when a plethora of secretaries have been portrayed as such.

There was a time when all, as in every operator sounded this way. It was partly due to the equipment. Especially long distance.

This is not the only use of a telephone operator in an extended sequence at the time. The opening of Counsellor at Law (the original play version--I haven't seen more than bits of the film version) was a long monologue--mostly responding to people on the phone--by a telephone operator. It's both funnier and deeper than this routine. There isn't much resemblance, beyond the basic situation, between the operator above and Ernestine. Certainly no slightest attempt at political satire. Sic transit phonia mundi.

There's a small town in Mexico in the state of Nuevo Leon where they still use this system. Lol I'm not kidding and the 2 phone operators listen in all the time.
@Geekygirrls2014on

Well I grew up in the country back in the 1940S-50S. The phone system was so archaic that we had to crank a handle on the side of the phone to get the operator's attention then tell her who we wanted to call. There were five families (farmers & ranchers) who used the same phone line, each home had two phones, one in the house and one in the barn. As kids it was our favorite rainy day past-time to quietly lift the receiver and if there was someone on the line, we'd all lean in close and listen in. But eventually one of the people having the actuall phone call would say "hey I think someone is listening in!" The other person would usually reply "it's probably one of those hooligan Weed kids" (I have TWELVE siblings). That's usually when we'd hang up our phone. It kinda ruined me for the 21st Century as I tend to take my phone calls in my bedroom closet these days (when I'm home) only because I still have the feeling 'someone is listening" ... but then again it probably is the govt. That also probably explains why I generally keep my cellphone inside a shoebox when I'm not using it. (The govt or terrorists, et al, can't see me through the phone's cameras. I also keep a small tab of duct tape over my laptop camera too. Yeah, I know, but I actually don't think I'm being paranoid! hahah

Part of the reason early Hollywood had stereotyped characters, such as telephone operators, elevator operators, and secretaries was to show what would happen to you if you stayed in that job, turned into an "old maid", and didn't marry the boss (AKA "the prince"). One example of this that really made me mad was Miss McCardle in the original version of "Sabrina". To marry the boss meant that one was special, and not destined to become a dried-out drone that no one cared about. The boss gave Miss McCardle tickets to take her mother to the theater, when his love-interest ingenue didn't seem to be available.

I'm up-thumbing, but that isn't fair. First, Lily Tomlin didn't write the dialog for Ernestine. Second, plagiarism is a word-for-word (or very close) copy of verbiage, and this was clearly an inspiration for her style and tone of voice, but hardly a copy of the script. And it was only 1:38 long. Ernestine has skit after skit with different subjects.

No, no, no. She did not "plagiarize" this character! Get real. Ernestine is a satire and parody of lots of mid 20th century telephone workers (and probably other people and culture types) who inspired Lily and her partner Jane Wagner. This clip above showcases one of about a hundred lady phone operators who appeared in films from the era. Nobody drags Lily Tomlin's reputation through the mud, so find something better to do with your time. And don't record in front of a TV ... like viewers are watching The Blair Witch Project; it looks awful.

We wrote our own stuff but I loved doing the skits off of "This Is a Recording the best. The writing and her performances were just perfection and I will always feel Ernestine will always be lurking in my blood. When I die I will probably say "One ringie dingie and then snort! I'm out!!!
