Every time I’ve seen Lily play she’s been one of the best players on the field. On all levels. She reminds me of Sam Mewis when she used to boss the midfield.

Imagine a team with 7 or 8 players as good or better than Lily? They might be as good as Spain and almost able to compete with Barca!!

Loool. You're the best, MLS. I'm done betting against Spain and Barca! You've been right for months, and I still found a way to trick myself into taking Lyon in the UWCL Final. No more! I guess I'll only fall for something like four or five times before I learn my lesson. Thanks for continuing to rock with us. -- Grant

The Yohannes to Sam Mewis comp is really sharp. Mewis was one of my favorite players in the 2019 World Cup, but I hadn't put that together. They're both excellent combos of size, smarts, skill, and decision-making. Great shout by you!

@@IntoTheChannelPod Thanks... I think.... I feel like someone just told me I was right about climate change or that smoking is one cause of lung cancer. There's a line that sticks in my mind from a really well written B movie called "The International" that's worth a watch. A national security agent is being straightened out by her boss after she gets idealistic having hit her head in a traffic accident. He reminds her in words something like the following; "There's what everyone wants to believe, there's what everyone needs to believe, there's everything else, then there's the truth."

Loved Lily's goal and really happy for her! I think Sophia's goal was the best of the game. The entire sequence first appeared like it was going to be a mess (S. Korea players sliding at her feet, crazy angle), but Sophia made something incredible out of it.

Definitely co-signing this. Smith's balance and concentration on that goal was phenomenal.

I actually think Yohannes has a realistic shot at making the 16 on the Olympic Team. Watching this match, the two times the USWNT looked amazing was minute 64, when the first game forwards were put back in AND minute 71 when Yohannes got in and replaced Albert. The thing I love about her is her calmness. You can tell Rodman is having problems finishing in the final third and I think it’s about the lack of calmness that inhibits her precision. Yohannes has that. At 16. Hayes is bringing this concept into the USWNT. It’s a process.

You didn't ask the question of how Japan was able to dump 4 goals on Spain in WC2023 AND finish top of that group. They must know something.
@IntoTheChannelPod
@IntoTheChannelPod 3 месяца назад
This was one of my favorite matches of the 2023 WC, and it's nothing against Spain. It's just that it was so surprising and multiple Japanese players had a great match: Miyazawa, Ueki, and Endo -- then Tanaka coming on and notching the final goal -- it was WILD. This comment makes me want to go back and watch that match. Lmao. If you tapped into your memory, how do you think Japan was able to pull it off? -- Grant

@@IntoTheChannelPod If anyone writes a book of the history of the women's game they should dedicate a volume to this game and the ones around it; they changed the history of women's international football. Without this game, Spain gets dumped out in the 16s or quarters as usual. These games didn't affect Barca or the history of Spanish women's football but they changed the Spanish national team forever. Arguably, they were more important than the Rubiales affair.

What happens if, god forbid, a Swanson or a Smith or a Rodman gets injured, and we need to chase a knockout game? Do we really want to have to turn to Alex Morgan or Crystal Dunn? That seems like an own goal to fill 2 attacker roster spots with 2 players incapable of generating offense. Bethune would be a more prudent selection. She would be a like-for-like sub, able to slot in for a Swanson or Smith, and that devastating front 3 would still be extremely dangerous. We've already seen how anemic a Morgan, Smith, and Rodman line is at the World Cup. Hayes should not handicap herself and make the same mistake.
@IntoTheChannelPod
@IntoTheChannelPod 3 месяца назад
Oooooooh totally agree on Bethune. Not totally sure why she wasn’t involved in either of these Korea matches though. She’s been at worst, one of the 10 best players in the NWSL this season.

Gotta say, I have to disagree with you about Girma. She ain’t sharpied in with that perma-ink. Girma is pre-printed. Factory-inserted. And I think this team is not a favorite over Spain, but this team means Spain is no longer a prohibitive favorite. Still the favorite though? Sure. Thanks for the shout, too.

The idea that the 2nd team would rank 4th?I don't think so by any measure. It was South Korea, a good side but not a challenge that really tells you where they are. No doubt its a strong forward line, but putting them anywhere near favorites is ridiculous.
@aboynam3dblu3
@aboynam3dblu3 3 месяца назад
@@locuus7 Your argument about rankings is pretty frail, I’m sorry to say. The FIFA world rankings are a good guideline, but a very rough one. Do you know what Spain was ranked as they headed into the WC that they just won? 6th. Do you know where the #2 team in the world will be during the Paris Olympics? Sitting at home because they didn’t even qualify. You say beating S. Korea is not a team to merit this type of response, okay, that might be so. But I would also point out that this Korean team manhandled Zambia (with Banda and Kundananji both playing) twice about a year ago and then drew Germany in the WC. And the US Women just beat them 7-0 on aggregate over two matches whereas Spain came very close to getting beaten by Denmark. I don’t think the US could reasonably be argued to be favored over Spain, but no other team in the world besides Spain can be said to be obviously better than the US either. And these Americans have to be one of the very few contenders that anyone can think has a chance of knocking off the WC champs right now. I don’t think your position about the US being nowhere near a favorites or 2nd favorites conversation is a very solid one.
@locuus7
@locuus7 3 месяца назад
@@aboynam3dblu3 France, Germany and possibly even Japan could easily be put above US for example. Yes you are right ranking as with Spain don't necessarily indicate level or outcome. I just think it's way to early to know how the US is traveling. My point with South Korea is the midfield and backline hasn't really been tested. As I said the forward line has some formidable players, and the changes Hayes is bringing, which are necessary, I think could result in an amazing team. But you also have to take into account how the team faired in the first half without those players.
@aboynam3dblu3
@aboynam3dblu3 3 месяца назад
@@locuus7 Your points aren’t without merit but you overstate them. The US just beat Japan and I would say this US team is better than the one that played in the She Believes cup just a month ago. Korea drew Germany in the WC and I am not so impressed with Germany’s performances since then that “easily” would be a word that I think fits when saying they’re above the US. And yes in the first half, when there were 9 changes to the starting roster, things looked not good. I would posit that almost none of the starters for the second game will be regular starters in the Olympics, and definitely not all together like that. That was basically a complete b-squad, not just a few different players that made the difference. France, Germany, and Japan are all teams that compete at a level which makes it an unsure thing to state definitely the US will beat them, but it is obvious that the US is capable of beating them. None of them are Spain and none of them are so good as to put them in a class above the US. Not even close, let alone “easily”. The Olympics will be a good test to see where the US is at compared to European competition, but anyone who says it is “clearly” or “easily” one way or the other right now is tending toward the trollish. It is very frustrating that our friendly windows occur during euro quals and their friendly windows occur during concacaf comp. The US really needs to play European teams more often, that much I think we can agree on.

@@aboynam3dblu3 as long as you don't beat Australia I don't care 😀 Although without Kerr I don't like our chances. Would you take Morgan? Would you lock in Yohannes? I like the move of Horan to more of a midfield role. Throw in Macario, Lavelle, the likes of Yohannes, it should be a dynamic and interchangeable mid-forward line. I think with Hayes introducing more triangle work the US can now hold the ball up more, and with 3-4 extremely fast forwards it could be nightmares for the opposition. Some part of me doesn't want to see the US bounce back to top 1, 2, I'll admit

I love this team, but let's be realistic. We were garbage at the World Cup and you're saying our second team is number four in the world? Us Americans keep huffing our own farts as far as football. Our first team in it's current state has a real shot of being ranked #4 globally. If we do the no-brainer and get Yohannes in ASAP we can really get somewhere. She's the Porsche while were driving the absolute best Cadillacs.

This is Dino. We were definitely mediocre at the WC. Aaaaaand, I was having a little fun with that idea on the show. I think if I had to bet, the following team would be somewhere in the Top 6-9 range and I’d love to hear what you think: FW: Jaedyn Shaw, Croix Bethune, Alex Morgan/Crystal Dunn MF: Rose Lavelle, Korbin Albert, Lily Yohannes DF: Emily Sonnett, Sam Staab, Eva Gaetino, Casey Krueger, Casey Murphy And apologies if I missed an obvious name for this 2nd team.
