Those old Lima deltics seem to go for ever don't they, The main problem with them is keeping all the buffers in place as they seem to disappear at the drop of a hat. Another great Bill I've learned so much since I discovered your channel
Lost the buffers on mine just after getting it as a kid in the late 70's. I've still got it in my bedside draw. It was my favourite and I've got very fond memories of getting it Christmas morning from my grandad.
Wow what a difference, so quiet and smooth after some time spent on the loco. Few lessons learnt there, not gonna trust all tyres are the same now. Fantastic again working your magic. I have found on some models that when made the manufacturer is in a bit of hurry to get them out and sometimes the paint is not dry the overspray inside the body mainly and so when the underframe is put into the body it is sort of glued in, it can be a bit of a fight though to get it out and you are assured that some damage may be done. I had the same problem with a friends loco a model of an Australian loco that after following the instuctions to remove the body it would not come off at all, it would not even move and this one had to as well, it was not a Lima model but made in China for a mob here in Australia. After a couple of hours we did mange to get it off though but boy that paint made a good glue. It took three of us myself, my friend the owner and my son just to get the body off, of it. Luckily no damage was done to it.
I had the exact same sticky problem with the Blue "Fife & Forfar Yeomanry", I persevered stroking very gently with a stanley knife, took a while but I got it.
Yeah it was very surprising to see. The body actually joined with the chassis at one end. It would take a bit of destructive work to sort it but I wasn't doing that if I could get the loco running OK otherwise.
hi bill love your vidios to open the bodies of these lima locos on this loco as in the class 47 lima s you have to remove the the black part of buffers they just pull out and bingo the body just clips out hope this helps irish fan
I think the buffers pull out to detach the body....?? Tip - a couple of Guitar plectrums are a good solution for those troublesome body clips! Slip between the chassis and the body.
Despite their shortcomings these old Lima diesels are tough and reliable workhorses. I remember paying around £30 for them new back in the late 1990s so something of a bargain compared to modern equivalents. Ironically the worst ones are those made in the last 2-3 years when the quality declined as the company was on the verge of collapse.
You didn't say whether, before you tested the slow starting, you run the loco in for a while. Running in evenly distributes the lubrication and re-beds the brushes, making for a slower start.
