Hi! I am from the United States and I just went to Ireland last week. While looking for something to do, I went to the fixture between O'Laughlin and Na Fianna for the Leinster title on December 2nd. It was my first experience with hurling and now I am rapt with this sport! I am absolutely gobsmacked by the accuracy of some of these long distance shots by these competitors as well as the intensity of the action on the ground. Back home here in the state of Ohio in the USA, I found a club dedicated to Gaelic sports, particularly hurling, and I am going to become a member.
Delighted you went to see it live - makes you really understand how hard this sport is! Can't wait till you get to hold that hurl man - it's a weapon n a beautiful tool is something else! History of this sport is amazing and the fact they are not strictly paid to do this unbelievable. God bless you son n best of luck at the GAA US style!
@@BridgetScottHerrmannFry Thanks for the offer but unfortunately, I tore my left Achilles playing Ultimate Frisbee and I am out of commission for a year. 😞 However, I may still go to some games
Same, i know I sound like every other American when I say this but as an 80% Irish person it just feels like it connects me to my roots in the isles PS: Anybody have any advice on where to watch these live? I live in chicago and would love to watch these games live
Now one of the greats after years in the wilderness in the 70s 80s 90s. The scene has changed a lot. Galway and Offaly in the 80s, Tipperary and Clare in the 90s. And very athletic nowadays and scoring points from angles and distances that was unheard of decades ago.
American here, never heard of hurling before today. My wife was reading a novel and the protagonist's favorite sport is hurling, so we checked it out. What a great game. Fantastic athleticism and endurance, and the game flows non-stop. I'll definitely watch whenever I get a chance.
As a kiwi ive come to realise that the Irish are hard arses. They compete at everything - rugby, football, Gaelic football, this hurling business.....then there is the MMA guys and boxers. Good sorts who love a laugh when I encounter them too.
There is also another Gaelic game played here called handball, played in a small hall or alley. Pro tip: You never want to take a punch from someone who has played a lot of handball 😏
Curious question. I was told by a friend from New Zealand that you guys do not like being called a kiwi. Yet, you called yourself a kiwi. Is it that you prefer not being called kiwi by an outsider? or just a personal preference? just wondering.
I have never EVER heard that before. I don’t know anyone who would object to that….. No idea where that claim fo your friend comes from ? Interesting….
Kiwis have a rep for being hard (which ye are for sure) n generally good laughs. I mean no one has a rep like the Irish for good times but not bad tbf! Imagine how good we could be if we only did 3 sports like NZ! Btw this "hurling business" 👏🤣 it's literal murder on grass man 🤣
@@stryka777 A kiwi is a lovely "nickname" for a nation. I have Paddy or Mick or just potato people. Pick Ur battles lad - wish I was called a small delicious furry skinned fruit 🥝
I lived in Ireland for two years,(Riverstown, Sligo)..And attending a hurling game in Sligo !!!!What a game ,...love the Irish, and i never forget you my dearest Aine Willis love u for ever !!!!!!!!!
Its amazing that at 60 mins there was only 2 points between them and on 63 mins there was 6 points between them and the game was over.....all down to the absolute genius of Peter Casey... and the Limerick work rate.
That 2nd half performance by limerick was a spellbinding combination of skill, power and composure. We (kilkenny) had no answer, even though our lads fought to the end.
I don't want to sound disrespectful but at least 5 of those Kilkenny players are only average enough club hurlers, Limerick have a good all round team but in the last couple of years there haven't been any decent opponents capable of even winning their own all Irelands, even Clare would have been well beaten in the final if they had overcome Kilkenny in the semi final.
The KK '4-in-a-row' team had 8 players that started each of the 4 finals in '06-'09. Limk had 11 players that started each of their 4 winning finals. KK used 22 different starters in the 4yrs. Limk used 18 starters in their 4 finals. In fact either Graeme Mulcahy or Peter Casey started in each of the 4 finals & each replaced the other as subs.
When you see Limerick strolling through Munster without having to win by much since 2018 it shows how poor all the other teams in the top tier really are. Back when Kilkenny won 4 in a row that team had to beat national league, Munster and Leinster champions and two of the best hurling teams of modern times 3 in a row seeking Cork and Tipperary the drive for 5 stoppers (I'm expecting Tipp to end Limerick's reign too btw 😉).
@@JayJay-dm8bn you're not comparing like-with-like trying to compare the KK 4-in-a-row to Limk's 4-in-a-row. The team KK beat most often in those 4yrs was Wexford. Also, Limk didn't face either Westmeath, Offaly or Dublin on their 4 All-Ireland successes. Any comparisons between the two teams is specious.
@@JayJay-dm8bnthat didn't age well, only Cork Clare and Kilkenny capable of stopping them , no chance the rest , Limericks 4 in a row way better, when KK done theirs, there was nothing in Leinster, all were useless eg Offaly Dublin Wexford,
@Castlelong333 As of July 28th 2024, Kilkenny's 4-in-a-row will forever remain the greatest team of all time especially when the starting team went through more different players rather than Limerick's over reliance on the usual 15. Kilkenny got to the 2010 final also and only lost that day because of King Henry Shefflin going off injured after about 10-15 minutes and the crucial absence of center back Brian Hogan. I was absolutely delighted to see Limerick's Drive for Five ended in the semi final to Cork, and to then see Clare beat Cork in the All Ireland final 2024 was icing on the cake, keeping the rebels waiting for at least a 20th season to win back the cup!
@@JayJay-dm8bn for Limerick to win the Four in a row they had to play 22 games v the top 7 seven teams , when all were going well eg Galway Tipperary Clare Waterford so on ,,,, Kilkenny had maybe 1 or two hard games to win their four in a row , there was nothing in Leinster , Dublin Wexford Offaly totally useless at the time ,,, Kilkenny walked into the semifinals, it was more or less the same players for Limerick who won the four in a row , not so Kilkenny , it was not the same team of players so how could they be better then the Limerick lads , , and Limerick did 6 in a row in Munster v when all the Munster teams were competing, Not a hope in hell would Kilkenny be able to do 6 in Munster , in 06 KK best a finished cork who never appeared again in Croke Park, 07 , beat a ok LK team who never appeared again in Croke Park, , 08 , beat a finished Waterford team who never appeared again in Croke Park, and 09 a young Tipperary were the better team but got a man sent off , 2010 that young Tipperary team beat ye out the gate, so ya this limerick team are the greatest ever ,
I just discovered hurling. I love it so much. Something about it is so familiar. Almost as if i CHARISHED the sport in a past life or something. Im still learning.
To new watchers: Ancient warrior sport 3000 years old (it would be played to get ready for battle the next day). Players aren't paid as such with no transfer market or draft - you play where you are born. The stick is a hurley/hurl, small leather grooved ball is pronounced Slit-er (Sliotar) and the mandatory helmets are a relatively new rule. Fantastic sport combining hand eye coordination of baseball, stick work/shooting of Lacrosse, serious cardio and toughness/bravery to play.
WELL IN THIS COMMENT BOX MAY BE 3 DOWN ) THE PERSON FROM 3 DOWN FROM K K ) IS A TRUE SPORTS MAN GAVE CREDIT TO LIMERICK EVEN THOUGH BEAT K K A REALLY LOVELY COMMENT TO LIMK ( K K HAS WON SO MANY ALL IRELANDS - HE HAS SO MUCH RESPECT FOR THE OTHER TEAM - THANK YOU
Gotta love @ 2:08:50 when Peter Casey scores his 5th point. The tv cuts to an attractive Limk supporter celebrating in the crowd. Marty is distracted by her appearance & describes the Limk hurlers as 'beautiful'. We know what was on your mind Marty.
@@CraicOfTheAsh yep, I remember that. 1st half v Cork when Peter used his 'beautiful hips' to discommode his marker. Marty was fishing for 'Dancing with the Stars' compliments on that occasion.
This is my first time watching Irish Hurling, it looks like a fun sport. Just noticed that the tackling in this game is a bit different then in Rugby, I was wondering what's the rules are when you tackle someone.
The final 10 minutes is Fantastic. I know nothing about this sport except I’m Irish by blood. I want to have a couple a FOOKIN creamy pints and run tru a FOOKIN wall
First time watcher from South Africa here. Perhaps I don’t fully understand the rules, but how come players are allowed to run with the sliotar in their hand for more then 4 steps without transferring it to their hand or it touching the ground and not get penalised? I imagine it can be quite a difficult rule to enforce, and enforcing it would slow down the flow of the game a lot, but do players ever actually get penalised for it?
A referee will allow a few extra if a player is being hindered from legally tapping the ball to ground or off the hurley. Exactly 4 steps is not policed to the extreme. It's open to perception and no referee is going to stop up a game for a cheeky step or two unless it's a goal in a tight game perhaps.
One thing about the young cats win or lose they stay humble look back at the 4 in row team dominated for 4 years as said one thing about the young cats win or lose they humble and will die in there boots than give in or give up even if 20 points behind they keep driving on , just wont quit ❤️💯🇮🇪💪
@@FisherFish420 He bounced the ball off his hurley and back into his hand, and therefore he has not fouled the ball. He was entitled to take another 4 steps and pass it off as a result
There are always complaints about adherence to the rules. The KK team that won 8 titles in 10yrs systematically fouled the opposition full-fwd line wrapping them up & dragging them over the end-line/sideline. Match officials refused to penalise them. Opposition teams had to change their style of play because KK were allowed do whatever they wanted. Now KK former-players/supporters want the rules changed so their type of foul play can reap rewards again.
@@raymondgilbourne112 I agree with that. You can see then how it's pretty problematic for the sport that teams are fighting fouls with fouls, and the ref can't control the game in line with its rules.
WATCHING THIS MATCH ON NEW YEARS DAY LIMERICK UNBELIEVABLE ! WHAT PROFESSIONAL ! K K GOOD ! BUT SO TIRED OF MARTY MORRISSEY SAYING HENRY - KING - MY FOOT ITS T J REID - IS THE KING !! SPORTSMAN ! RESPECT FOR LIMK TEAM & STAYED ON FIELD WITH THE " BEST " MARTY PAY HEED !

Duignan after the game still on about the 65 Kilkenny didn’t get. He should have mentioned the 65 Limerick didn’t get in 2019 V Kilkenny. Limerick today could possibly have been going for 6 All Irelands in a row a bigger talking point do you not think mr Duignan
Trust me the realist 💯 ❤ will agree they are better young hurlers in co kilkenny that should be in big clumsy awkward walter walsh that is a current rugby player here in my hometown alot know they better young lads on the bench its jjst his strenght and size really but when it comes to speed and skill leave it so 😅 and personally i think they alot better hurlers down in university limeick alone u.l that is way more experienced than will o donough he fcking useless u have to admitt if you are been honest with yourself 😅 just in the collage alone down in limerick i could pick 2 or 3 young eager chaps that would take will o donough postion its just beyond me hows hes center bck on one the greats of all time team him and walter its just there build strength , size that there hurling for brillant teams they be on the bench for me i think the selectors that chose them 2 cant even call them hurlers and thats no disrespect but been honest and real hurling fans from all over ireland ❤️💯🇮🇪 will tell u there proper useless and thats no joke 😅
And again a final ruined by the shitty rules. There is a great sport somewhere in here, but launching the ball a million times from way out is not how to get there. The sport can not grow unless you make a goal worth 5.
