This build was a journey. And to be honest, that feels like an understatement.
We had rebuilt sections of rock before in smaller sections around the house - footage that will be shown in future videos. But nothing that required removing entire sections of wall, potentially collapsing sections of the house. We were terrified taking down the first section. But we trusted in the skills from the old world, and kept a healthy level of fear. On the other side of it, we are grateful that there were no major injuries, no collapsed walls, and a strong, safe final product that we are indescribably proud of.
Building with limestone rock and lime mortar is a rare skill in the modern world. It's an undeniably strong, lasting technique of construction. During the long hours in the sun, watching the wall slowly grow one rock at a time, we felt with empathy the relief our ancestors must have felt the first time they were able to build with brick or cinder block. We have built with cinder blocks in other sections of the property, and the same height takes a fraction of the time, with an ounce of the artistry. But nothing compares to the beauty and regalty of limestone. We are so glad that we decided to take the time and the energy to build it in the original style.
There are many thanks to give out for this. It felt like every volunteer that we have had helped in one way or another, but we decided to highlight those who really helped us finish this wall. Mickie and Matt Hooper helped us pull out the stumps way back in November of 2023. Alice O'Mahoney, Ramona Stöckle and April Newton all helped with demolition and reconstruction on various sections. And finally, Zoe D'ath and Ollie Westerna helped finish out reconstruction, drainage and refilling the giant trench. Ladi, as always, was essential to this build. Lastly, thank you to Domen Bajde, who came out and dug out the stairs for us while on a quick trip home to Slovenia.
English does not have a powerful enough word to express how grateful we are to each and every person who volunteered their time and energy to help us. We could not do it by ourselves. Najlepše hvala vam.
Hvala lepa Ladi in Domen Bajde.
Thank you Mickie, Matt, Zoe and Ollie!
Go raibh maith agat Alice!
Danke schön Ramona!
