Liminal Spaces (2000’s Childhood)

Liminal spaces often create a sense of nostalgia triggered in your mind from early childhood memories mostly ranging from mid 90’s to early 2000’s. They can make you feel nostalgic yet utterly disturbed at any given time to any unnerving image.
To be in a Liminal Space means to be on the precipice of something new but not quite there yet.
liminal spaces are important because of their ability to construct their own values and ideologies relating to a particular time period in history and then to transpose these values to a time belonging to their own experiences

It’s because liminal spaces are about trying to remind you of a memory that you don’t have. Sure at 0:15 you might have a fond memory of riding that horse or jumping on those couch seats, but we’re those seats always that blue? When was there a big lollipop toy in there? It’s all about Reminding you of those old fuzzy memories from childhood. Ones that you know but don’t understand. It makes you connect dots that don’t connect to begin with.

This makes me feel not only nostalgic but incredibly sad aswell. Like this is all that remains of my childhood, now just merely images permanently frozen in time. Images from a time in which I can never return. Images from a time that no longer exists except only in still images, videos and so on. It's like being intensely homesick for a home that is no longer there. This time will always be special to me and I will treasure it always 💗

@@andywest5773 That's true, but I'm too old to go to the playplaces that are shown here, so that's why it's nostalgic to me. Besides, right now my life isn't good, I'm suicidal plus I have non-supportive parents and a rude brother who didn't care when I told them (after struggling to tell them--It was hard to admit) that I have suicidal thoughts and I want to kill myself. On top of that, 3 years ago, my mom told me (on an leisurely evening walk---She wasn't mad and didn't blurt these words out) that "I wouldn't really care if you died. I have another child and I could just make another. Your brother is a lot more liked and popular than you and nobody at school even likes you, let alone wants to be your friend. I wouldn't even be DEVASTATED if you died. You're stupid anyway." Yup, those are her exact words. I never forgot, even after 3 years. Remembered the insults word for word. I even remember every insult my father and the internet gave me. I don't even have other family members to support me because none of them like me. I don't have friends to support me because I have never known how to socialize--I am socially awkward and shy, yet I want to make friends. And even then, I avoid people. I'd rather forget my memories from my teen years starting 3 months into being 13. (Also, sorry for over sharing, I've been doing that a lot when I type ever since I was 13)

These are absolutely the kind of places that, if you wander the halls long enough, you’ll eventually encounter an old childhood friend of yours who you eventually lost touch with. You’ll chat for a while, reminisce. Then, you’ll get the feeling it’s time to leave, to put these memories back in their box. You get home, and decide to look up the friend you met there on social media, to stay in touch… only to discover that they died years ago, not long after you lost contact. Is this weirdly specific? Yes. Did I come up with it just now? Also yes.

Liminal spaces always bring me back to my childhood. To be honest, those early years weren't all sunshine, especially after my stepfather entered the picture. Yet, what I revisit isn't tied to a specific memory but rather a broad emotional experience. It's the sunsets in backyards on summer evenings, the scent of a small swimming pool wafting through the air, or encountering a mysterious hallway in a place beyond my young understanding. Back then, my world was a mix of mystery, fear of the unknown, and my friend's fenced backyard feeling like the scariest, largest place imaginable. Even venturing to the distant tree felt like a daring adventure. The colors of the sky, the clouds, and the sunsets were alien yet awe-inspiring. These memories, existing solely in my mind, occasionally resurface in small, random fragments. When I catch a glimpse or a whiff, there's a faint sense of familiarity, a recognition of a unique nostalgic memory-each experience holding its own charm.

Man you don't know how it feels when I can only find very little pictures of my childhood playgrounds before they were remodeled. I even had a basement that actually looked like a playroom. It's been remodeled twice. Once as a more modern entertainment space and now it's an airbnb. I miss when it was full of toys, games, childish puzzle mats, a shitty CRT, a VCR, and VHS tapes 😭

Liminal Spaces embody and emanate the benevolence of their exalted designers, having done everything they could to bring fiction into reality for their young; for us. No matter the era, those carefree architects, two generations before us, have always sought to embellish every inch of our formerly boundless scenery with that love. It’s pure but unknowing, and the act of observing it is nostalgia jouissance. Look for the game “Higher Philosophy: Structure” in 2027 for the whole picture.

I described liminal spaces and why they're appealing to gen z and millennials is because it's not just a nostalgia for childhood, it's a nostalgia for a time in the past but it carries with it the feelings relevant to what we feel now. So it's like current feelings overlaying a memory. The current feelings would be represented by the fact they're empty, illustrating that we no longer go here anymore but they're a place we were familiar with meaning we feel like we did go here. So it's like the current state of a past memory being revealed to you.

When I was young I lived in a town in NY about an hour from the city. It was liminal space heaven with all the going out of business stores, a laundromat with a lounge area made to look like a living room which no one ever went to, a movie theatre so decrepit it ended up condemned years later and so many places had this weird “empty” internal architecture that always felt like it was missing something. At the time I loved these places and tried to explain why to my mom but I couldn’t. When I discovered this genre I literally teared up. I never knew a time where these places were bustling. My memory literally lies in things looking empty like this. I’m glad others can appreciate this as well.

Nah there's other ways to get that kind of nostalgia. That's how liminal spaces work, they're dark and abandoned so it makes your childhood feel even more gone and in the past. Stuff like schools, kids play places, kids stores, malls. Most of us have seen and been to these places it just wasn't these specific ones and they were generally more well lit and less empty lol

This video made me re think about all of my childhood memories especially summer. I remember I would go over to on Eid my best friends house (Jade, I have no idea where she is or who she is now after like 7 years) but it was her grandmas house it was soooo cool and big there was like an extra attic space we would go and play in it had the best lighting and there was a back alley, she had a fun play room, the whole house was just nostalgic (summer childhood vibes). Then I also had my best friend who was like a sister to me who lived like an hour away but I would still go over like once a week every summer. It was a small house but super fun, it was by a farm so we would go play. I also haven’t seen that friend in probably over 8 years I think she moved, this makes me miss all my old friends and memories. Now summers aren’t as fun now that we all have phones and electronics. We all just stay in our rooms watching TikTok all day instead of going outside in the sun eating popsicles and biking around town with friends, or going to the pool/lake.

i dont always understand this world..but this video made me feel so many things, nostalgia , happiness, depression, anxiety but it also reminded me of life. Its most likely just my silly brain but i did write a speech? Of sorts while lietening to this I call it You matter - a nostalgic realization There are few things I never wish on anyone..yet long for them to experience is the nostalgic longing for a past you never had. The moments you once forgot brought back with simple pictures and music. We long for the past, we fear the future, and we take the present as being bad..when before our past was the now..where we could go to book fairs at school, ride those little coin operated rides like the apple car. Or where playgrounds were sacred places of imagination and not empty and void of joy. We take what we have experience for granted. Sure some may be bad and others worse…but there are those moments that shine like lost treasure. Golden memories with gems of happiness, sure now isn't the past..and things seem to get worse, we feel dumber or depressed. But we don't always feel that way, we enjoy our lives when we can..we experience our lowest points, we suffer alone with the constant war of thoughts flooding our head. What we should have done, what we shouldn't have said, so many thoughts. But through all that we survive- no we create we thrive. We may miss those golden days but that doesn't mean we can't make new ones. We may think everything sucks forever, but as my favorite quote states. At the end of everything….hold onto anything Cherish life as our most beautiful gift, a chance to create and experience everything. For in the end on our deathbed we will remember Remember all those who helped us, who hurt us and all those moments that made us human. Keep being human, keep experiencing life and keep trying to survive, create and be happy. For something as small as a gesture a simple compliment could mean the world to another. Keep growing and keep trying to experience life..for we only have one life. Treasure it as your greatest possession (With love and care to all who may see this..who took the time to read it all, thank you and take care.)
