The way Hannah hyperextending like that actually reminds me of myself, my three daughters, and several of my grandchildren. Especially our knees when we stand, our knees hyperextending backwards. We have a genetic connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. We have the Classic/Hypermobility type.

As a kid, I identified that there was something up with our joints in my family. I just didn’t know the name for it for another 30-ish years.

@@CynthiaPrice79 I started having severe pain in my legs when I was 5. The doctors told my parents it was growing pains. My dad massaged my legs up until I moved out of the house. When I was 11 the rheumatologist put me on Advil every 6 hours every day no matter if I was hurting or not and this was back when it was still just a prescription. When I was 12 I started dislocating my shoulder when I would swing the bat in softball. When I was 26 I was in the hospital because I have a mitral valve prolapse and when I get sick my heart rate goes crazy and I keep going into A-Fib. I had a doctor then tell me he thought I classical connective tissue disorder but there wasn’t anything they do about it. Of course by that time I was dislocating shoulders, wrists, fingers, ribs, and knees. Then when I was 36 I was diagnosed with brain cancer. At one point my oncologist sent me to see a rheumatologist because I had a positive ANA and he diagnosed me with EDS. I started crying. I told him, I have been living with chronic pain since I was 5 and nobody has ever really listened to me. I hate with a passion that I passed this to my daughters and some of my grandkids.

If there were some therapeutic benefit to wearing the braces and her condition could actually be improved by wearing them that would be one thing, but if it is only delaying the inevitable and Hannah will need to have the surgery later, I can’t understand why the owner would want to wait to get her the surgical option that could actually fix the problem. Hannah will be better able to handle the surgery and recovery at 7 yrs than she would be at 8 or 9. If it were me I’d get that lovely girl in for surgery as soon as the orthopedic surgeon thinks advisable. Hoping for the best for Hannah. ❤

I can only imagine how difficult a decision that was. As with many large breeds 7 can be towards the end of their life so having her go through surgery may have proven to be very difficult to recover from. I pray the braces work for her.

Scott, watching you makes me want to move to your country. I'd give anything if you could be my vet. My Shepherd I lost due to his joints not staying together. He had the worst arthritis in his elbows and in so much pain . He was only 1 1/2 yrs old. My heart still breaks daily..just maybe you could have saved Nigel ❤

I think Michael is a phenomenal surgeon and I would trust his diagnosis and recommendations 150%. Does think owner think these “shoes” are a permanent fix? I know surgery is scary but you have to put your fears aside for what is best. What would you do if it was happening to you or her husband? Good thoughts for Hanna and also for Lea to make the right decision in the end

Surgery can also be very expensive. Not everyone can afford it, so who knows what the full reason is.

I suspect the owner will change her mind about the fusion surgery, eventually. Especially if Dr starts to express an urgent need for it (before she gets too old for anaesthesia, etc).
@tanialangford6662

I agree. I think there's going to become a time when the surgery is required but I understand the owner wanting to prolong that as long as possible. Dr Scott is amazing.
@CynthiaPrice79

@@tanialangford6662 I get the emotion behind it, but logically, it makes everything worse. The surgery gets less and less safe as time passes.

@@CynthiaPrice79 agreed the brace is only really a temporary fix, I still believe it will deteriorate perhaps more slowly with the brace. Hopefully she’ll get the surgery done while the dog is young and before it reaches the point where surgery is no longer an option because it has deteriorated too much.

Probably that german shepherd dog would have been able to withstand the surgery as well, but of course i also understand the owner''s fear of the surgery, i believe that german shepherds are a resistant breed.

Meh. They had a perfect solution that would be temporarily painful but good for the long run. Poor dog that will need to bare (and bear) these braces instead of being fine in a few weeks time...

I Totally agree with you but i suppose we don’t know their financial situation etc. I know id follow the orthopaedic surgeons suggestion of fusing the joints esp as Scott said that ultimately it’s probably what she’ll need and the poor dog will be older and maybe less able to tolerate the surgery.

Yeah, I have a dog with hyperextending hawks and they keep telling me not to do the surgery until he will not bear weight on it and it’s like no… he is not happy and braces don’t work because he ends up with pressure sores- so I am betting the same thing will happen to her and then you have to wait for those sores to heal really good before you bother with surgery because there’s no extra skin on the legs.

This actually makes me upset. Even though my opinion doesn’t matter, I think it is sad that just bc the owner is afraid of surgery, it doesn’t change the fact it is still the very best option for long term results. It would or should be self explanatory. Hannah isn’t walking correctly the way her little body is made. The doctors are telling you the best choice is surgery so she can walk and run in the future with no pain and properly. Why wouldn’t you take that option? Yes it’s scary, but it’s a necessary risk with the best case scenario for the long term. It will give her a normal life from then on. I don’t understand it? But it’s not my dog, unfortunately.
