Pete and Sonny protecting the bodega during the blackout is my FAVORITE part. Keeping his cousin's store safe from looters was just a good example of how sweet Sonny is

It would be pretty much to just sneak in as background characters since the filming utilized the actual city of Washington heights in NY. This would’ve probably been an easy thing to do if we knew when it was filming and where they were

HA HA!! This is one of my personal favorite musicals written by Lin-Manuel himself! Hamilton may have been his breakout, but In the Heights came first in his prime years! This film adaptation with star Anthony Ramos as the lead role Usnavi gives off a vibe that’s so infectious. And Scoot. Since you’ve already watched Hazbin Hotel. This movie also stars two cast members of that animated musical series. Stephanie Beatriz (Carla) and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Daniela) as the salon ladies.

the song that plays when the blackout happens gives me such anxiety and after knowing what happens it gives me even more anxiety cause abuella's death hit rly hard when i first saw in cinema because my nana died like not long before it came out in cinema and even before she dies i remember first watching it in cinema and feeling like i was gonna cry purely from the anxiety of the chaos and that just shows how good the song was written and the acting in the film was that it can generate such a feeling inside me as a viewer

Fun fact! During the 96,000 song in the pool was filmed during the winter and in an interview with Ramos (i think) he said that the pool was FREEZINGG but with their editing it made it less noticeable that is was winter

if you’re looking for another musical i recommend Tick Tick Boom. the music / story isn’t written by Lin-Manuel but it was directed by him!! his directorial debut! it’s one of my favorite films ever made

Lin loves to bring people back into his projects for sure lol. Would love to see Encanto (another one of Lin's works). Some Fun Facts: *1.* The actor for George Washington was the original Benny *2.* Lin, of course, played original Usnavi (the main character, similar to how he played hamilton). *3.* Lin even brought his parents in the movie (the people who say "welcome home" in Breathe) *4.* The original Graffiti Pete shows up in the movie as the bartender *5.* Abuela Claudia in the movie is the original actor for the musical *6.* Not shown in the movie, but the original Vanessa did end up playing Angelica (Hamilton) at some point *7.* If you end up watching Encanto, the actor for Carla voices Mirabel (main character)

Ugh the musical is also so great, it delves into Nina and Benny's relationship more and how her father dislikes him due to differing racial backgrounds, Sonny and Graffiti Pete were going to be together in the og draft, Nina had a badass mother, it was SO great

Thanks for reacting to In the Heights. I think this musical is a bit underrated. The musical came before Hamilton and people disliked the movie because it was not Hamilton. My favorite song is 96,000 (the lottery one) and Carnaval del Barrio (the one with all the flags).

Loooove that you're getting into musicals. I'm sure several people have suggested Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway and I'll echo that recommendation. Also if you missed out on Hairspray (2007) and Dreamgirls (2006), even people who don't typically like musicals enjoy both of those films.

I felt so bad for In The Heights. It could have been appreciated so much more by the wider audience if they didn't get screwed over by the COVID pandemic, plus other things that happened to prevent it from being filmed and released earlier. People just weren't cramming themselves into movie theaters in 2021, so the movie sorta flopped.

if you want another musical that has a movie to react to and also has a lin manuel miranda connection, i totally suggest tick tock boom! lin directed it, but it was actually written by the guy who wrote rent (one of the most famous and, in my opinion, best musicals to exist), so it would be a good bridge to reacting to that one too, which also has a movie. im so glad you've been getting into musicals, it's such an incredible art form!

what a W, you gotta watch Encanto and 21 Chump Street next (both by Lin-Manuel Miranda). 21 Chump Street is only like max 15 mins and it's free on youtube. Anthony Ramos (Usnavi, John Laurens/Philip Hamilton) is in it too. And Encanto got some GAS songs that got that classic LMM cadence to them. My top 3 songs from ITH are Blackout, When You're Home, and Carnaval Del Barrio/Raise the Flag (I forget how to spell it in Spanish lmao myb)

Definitely recommend Encanto! It’s one of the best Disney movies in my opinion, and of course all the songs are amazing since they were written by LMM. The animation is gorgeous as well

In the Heights was first performed in 2005. Hamilton wasn't performed for a decade in 2015. Lin Manuel Miranda probably took inspiration from In the Heights music for Hamilton not the other way around.

I'll subscribe if you watch Hadestown lol. It's a musical on the greek mythology story of Orpheus and Eurydice, in a industrial revolution setting with jazzy pop songs. It's short of amazing and is my second favorite theatre musical. In terms of movie musicals, you MUST watch The Greatest Showman

Personally I really didn't like most of the changes from the show to the movie, but most of the cast did a great job and the direction is good (other than the changes that imo detracted from the story). I have one major issue with casting for one character that really took me out of the movie overall, but that's subjective so I'm sure other people probably liked that person's performance. I absolutely love this show though, and I'm glad it got a movie.
