Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans just got eliminated from College Football Playoff contention for the second year in a row. This time, only through 8 weeks of the season. The expectations were sky-high for the Trojans this year, and Riley failed to deliver, even with generational talent Caleb Williams at QB. What does this mean for Lincoln Riley's legacy? Dude OU got worse every year he was there, his strength and conditioning program is the main culprit. OU lacked toughness every year, his recruiting is crap too, the portal can only help soo much for the one and dones, how you supposed to build a culture with that?

His teams obviously lacked toughness. There's a reason why they couldn't compete with the big boys during his time at OU. Same reason they got smacked by Utah 3-times in a row. When a Riley team runs into a physical squad, they get ran.

Great take ! Anyone who looked at Rileys time at Oklahoma objectively should have seen this coming. Simply coaching in a different time zone doesn't automatically change a coach and his staffs coaching philosophy nor does it bring toughness. He has lied so many times about why he snuck out of Oklahoma in the cover of darkness. He said he wouldn't be able to recruit the kids needed to win a natty, Coach V will have 3 top ten recruiting classes since he arrived etc. College Football is better for everyone when USC is good it's just a shame you all got duped by Muleshoe

Grinch has availability. No DC with a decent resume will sign on with Riley. His offensive strategy short changes the defense. They'd be coaching an exhausted defense that is often defending a short field. Grinch is the best Riley can get.

It only gets tougher from here. USC will be in the Big 10 next season and will have to play against Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State. That’s 3 losses right there and they’ll be eliminated from the playoffs.

OU fans saw it coming. OU made riley look better than he is. Stoops left him fully stocked cupboards. He didn't recruit CD Lamb, Samaje Perine, Joe Mixon, Baker Mayfield ,Kyler Murray, etc..lol. SC hiring him under the table and the way he left like a thief in the night makes(38 players left also) me laugh. No more texas tech style, all offense and no defense for us. That show is out west now. Manning, a linebacker by trade and coaching CB's. Joke. Wiley. Only one lineman could bench over 300lb's when riley hired him. Joke. Grench's Defenses stutter like he does. So glad they sold out. Now we have real Sooners in charge who out recruit him easy. Just like Stoops, Switzer and the rest did. SC thought he could build a program. Lololol. He's a good OC, Thats it. And you are giving Lincoln Riley way too much credit for his accomplishments at Oklahoma He didn't develop Baker Mayfield or Kyler Murray they was both transfers and he was handed a team that had just finished the season 11-2 But thank you USC for taking him off of our hands we would have been in serious trouble going into the southeast conference with that coaching staff just like you're going to be in trouble going to the Big ten with that coaching staff USC will be another Nebraska

You are right. A Lincoln Riley coached team is just not physical enough for the Big-Ten or SEC. It's just enough to get by in conferences like the Big-12 or Pac-12, but when they run into a well coached team like Utah, they get pushed around.

Blame Grinch all you want. Riley fired Mike Stoops as his Defensive Coordinator because the defense was just as awful as it is now. Mike Stoops coached a team in a National Championship Game and his defense did not give up a single point winning the National Championship. Lincoln Riley fired that coach. The defense after 7 years as head coach and three or four DC, this is a Lincoln Riley problem solely.

An OU guy here. Look, I honestly think Calib is a very special talent. He was a true stud at OU. I have a ton of respect for him staying with the team to help beat Oregon in the bowl game before he left with TBOW. I am disappointed in the advice he has been given and the way he has been used. His first year at USC he didn’t even have to play the two best teams in the conference. They dodged both Washington and Oregon. They beat UCLA who was pretty good but the only other good team they played was Utah who beat them in the regular season and then trounced them in the conference championship. They had no business being in that game they just got a good luck of the draw and had the easiest route.

Facts, people hyped them up that year and going into this year, and I couldn't understand it. They were obviously a strong offensive team, but they are about as much of a glass cannon as Colorado. Not an easy opponent, but certainly not a feared one. UCLA probably beats them this year.

The hype all stems from the huge nationally recognized brand they have. I mean, it's Hollywood. They have their starting QB in every single Dr. Pepper commercial. @@SaturdayShenanigansYT I agree, I just feel like most of the "legacy" schools have not won anything in decades now, and I find it hard to justify giving them a spotlight anymore. Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Tennessee, Miami, Penn State have all come up empty for almost 20 years now. The only big-name football schools which have are Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, and LSU (once). The most successful CFP-era team after Alabama is Clemson, and they never got the kind of preseason hype the failing blue bloods I mentioned above get every year. For reference, I'm a Washington fan and I'd say we're an upper-middle on that blue blood scale, a tier below the teams I mentioned above, but pretty close. And I see us benefit from reputation-based ranking when it doesn't feel deserved. I get that it's a part of CFB but it's kind of unfortunate.

It's almost hard for me to believe that Nebraska was good😂 My whole life of watching CFB, they have been nothing. But yeah I agree the legacy schools get the benefit of the doubt when it comes time to rank teams. Unfortunately, I don't think that's ever going to change, unless we are in charge. I've watched a few usc meltdown videos in the past few days and the only mention of Oklahoma by another Trojan fan was to continue to call us unhinged psycho ex girlfriends because we had the audacity to tell the Trojan faithful exactly what was coming from a Riley led program. Im a OU fan that hates Lincoln riley but he hasnt failed yet just like Venables hasnt succeeded yet. The point is to win a championship. Until Lincoln is done at USC we wont know if he succeeded and until Venables wins one with OU we wont know if he's succeeded. Last year people said Lincoln has succeeded and Venables failed but because their records are different this year they have flipped the narrative. The truth is 2 years isnt enough time to tell. Lincoln could hire the best DC and turn it around by year 4 and people would call it a success. Is that likely? No but nothing is set in stone until a championship is won or not won. 2 years isnt enough time and anyone who has an opinion right now is suffering from recency bias

Here's my conspiracy on not firing Grinch... USC and Riley were already in talks his 2nd to last season at OU. So he informed a few of his friends ie Grinch, Wylie, and a cpl others he brought on. They all get raises, and as long as they don't say anything, then Riley won't fire them. I don't think he thought SC was going to put a ton of pressure on him since it was a "rebuild".

Would they even be in the top 50 with another loss and could be out of the top 75 with 2 more losses. Is the Big Cheese at USC even capable of seeing the reality that is Lincoln Riley. Perhaps can't see that every year the Big 12 defensive coordinators were slowing down Riley's offense year by year and perhaps Riley's last year at OU could have easily been a losing season. How much money would it cost him if he ends up not even in the top 50 and would he bail because of the pay cut.

Both OU and USC coaches got to inherit patched together Frankenstein teams. Lincoln got the better end of the deal with a Heisman qb and several outstanding receivers but in the end it's almost impossible to make a run at a National Championship with players you didn't recruit. Both teams and coaches with be just fine but it will take both teams probably another 4 years with the moves to the SEC and Big10 to deal with.

Riley has had two years, and he inherited a program in a better place. Prime picked up a 1-11 team, and didn't have much time to establish his culture. 4 wins is still an upgrade from 1. You are never winning under Lincoln. Finesse and style points don't win championships. Grench and Wiley are both disasters and OU suffered last year when Riley took Caleb and Mario Williams and McCutcheon with him to SC. And we know that some of his coaches that went to SC were recruiting for SC during Lincoln's last year there. That is what really hurt OU in 2022. USC deserves better and will find out the bitter truth SOONER rather than later.

Anytime a coach has to rely on the portal to fill his roster, it’s an indictment on his ability to recruit. You build your foundation and your depth through recruiting. And when I say recruiting, I’m referring to all levels of your team, not just the skill position players. See, all the hype with his recruitment is from the skill positions. But champions are built upfront, on the offensive and defensive lines. Honestly, this is elementary. But you need some rocks coaching these lines, that can recruit and develop these young men and produce the results on the field. This is where USC is lacking, particularly on the defensive side as Grinch does not have a track record of recruiting or developing his players. Recruits see this and go where they will be developed physically and mentally. That’s why Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, LSU, Notre Dame et al continue to sign the top offensive and defensive players. To show your recruits you mean business, go get some top coaches and the recruits will come. But until then, USC will continue to flounder in the middle of the pack.
