The Lincoln Tunnel crosses the Hudson River, connecting midtown Manhattan with eastern New Jersey. It is among the most important arterial facilities in the NYC metro area, serving as a critical commuter corridor.

@tpir1972 Originally it was. Robert Moses wanted to continue the Long Island Expressway, which still is I-495, to go through the Queens Midtown Tunnel, across Manhattan, and out through the Lincoln Tunnel all the way to the NJ Turnpike. Community opposition cancelled the Mid-Manhattan Expressway, and that eventually dropped the interstate designation on the NJ side.

Yep and you see the part of 495 that they did build into Manhattan at the beginning. There’s even less progress into Manhattan on the east side at the queens midtown tunnel portal

@ArtStone its just the way tolls are set up in the area. for all the hudson river crossings, drivers pay a toll only to enter NY, but not leaving NY.

I've got a friend who was born in that tunnel in a traffic jam. He doesn't know which side of the state line it was, but in such a case you get a birth certificate for the state where you exit the tunnel.

@roadwaywiz That is the same with the Penn Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia. You dont pay to leave Philadelphia but you do have to pay to enter Philadelphia.

Is that the New York Skyline you see when leaving the Tunnel? I always thought it was when I was in NY Wednesday but now I am not 100% sure if that is NY or not.

MrWill1985 yes it is. You turn briefly back easy after leaving the tunnel to view New York before 495 heads west again into weehawken

It’s Route 495 it was supposed to go all the way across and connect to I-495 at the Queens midtown tunnel, making 495 stretch from I-95 in NJ all the way to Riverhead on Long Island. But they never built it further than what you see here due to opposition, the same story with the short freeway when you exit the Holland Tunnel. That’s I-78 and again it was supposed to cross Manhattan

Aaron Bryant I'm seeing that for 1st time, although there seems to be a toll getting off that stretch S-bound (eastern leg).
