My 2nd kyu Aikido exam, on 21 January, 2012. I began training in May 2009. Learn more about Aikido, the martial art of harmony, and follow my blog sharing my experiences as a student at GrabMyWrist.com. Aikido is a non-oppositional, non-competitive practice appropriate for all ages.

Traditionally, all kyu-ranked students wear white belts, and yudansha wear black belts. At our dojo the lower kyu ranks (unranked, 6th, and 5th kyu) wear white. 4th and 3rd wear blue, and 2nd and first wear brown. During this exam I was wearing my 3rd-kyu blue belt. After the exam I got a brown belt. They have no real significance, of course, but the colors make it easy for new people to know who to ask for help, and for everyone to see at a glance the overall level of a class.

Just watched all your aikido video's and I must say it gives me hope that one day I might get the hang of aikido,I have only been doing aikido in the UK for about six months and still confussed..:)

Thank you, Emmerson, for the kind note. I'm glad you are enjoying training. All the best on your 5th kyu exam! I'm sure you'll do well. :-) I have been practicing Aikido since May of 2009, so a little over 3 years. I normally train 5 days a week, 2 classes a day. I also do a lot of seminars, and a little training on my own. I really enjoy it. All the best on your exam, and happy training!

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful feedback. :-) The "dialects" of Aikido are interesting, and I always enjoy learning how different schools do things in different ways. I liked your comments (on another video) about the need for handgun training, if you're going to be teaching/studying handgun take-aways. Some very good points.

Hi Aria - It is a wall-to-wall mat, made of very sturdy foam, and covered with a large sheet of tough plasticized fabric of some sort. It's soft enough for rolling safely, but not too soft - you don't want to sink into it or it would make movement difficult.

the technnic is very good, but dynamic is very low for 2 kyu

@aikidodave96 Thanks, David. :-) I felt less prepared for this exam than the previous ones. Or maybe less "rehearsed" would be the right word. Because work has been insane, and I was at the Bridge seminar last weekend, I didn't plan every bit of it like I've done on past exams. This time I had to actually know the stuff, and just do it. It felt less polished, but also more genuine.

I just deleted a hostile comment. I don't like doing that. I'd rather engage in intelligent conversation with someone, even (especially) if they are pointing out somewhere I could improve, or sharing some insight they've had. The comment I deleted was just critcal and negative. When I looked at other comments (on other videos) by the same person, they were also critical, demanding, damning, and rude. I'm not going to interact with someone like that. Criticism is welcome, being a jerk is not.

Thank you for your kind note. One of our dojo members grew up in Turkey, if I remember correctly. :-) I'm glad you have found my videos useful. What dojo/club do you train at, or who is your sensei? It's great that in Aikido we can have so much in common all over the world. All the best on your 4th kyu exam! I'm sure you will do well. :-)

A good test. It's wonderful to see how you're progressing in your training. Any date yet for your 1st kyu? I am an aikido student myself here in Toledo, OH. My name is Rolf Granlund. And your uke was fantastic as well.

Nice demonstration of the techniques. Just curious if this is a USAF dojo as the techniques don't seem to be the same as what are required for 2nd Kyu. (I just took mine).

Thank you, Most Interesting Beard (great name). :-) No, we are part of the California Aikido Association, Division 3, under Robert Nadeau Shihan. My teacher trained under several people, including Morihiro Saito Sensei, so you might see some Iwama influence as well. Congratulations on your 2nd Kyu exam!

i guess you shoud wear either green (3rd kyu) either white belt during the exam according to the name of the video.

Still confused at 6 months sounds about right. ;-) I'm still confused half the time at 3+ years. Probably the other half, when I'm not confused, I'm wrong. LOL Think of it as "beginners mind," the opposite of "already knowing." It's a good thing. Enjoy.

Thanks Linda for replying !!! I am really enjoying Aikido, I wish I could train it every day like you !! I only train twice a week (2hours) . Next year I´ll be going to the USA to study and improve my English ,hope we can practice a little of aikido if I go to California,,, What`s the name of the DOJO where you train? The tatame isn't good for aikido training. Holds very movement of the feet.

Hi Linda ,,loved your videos.. I`ve been practicing aikido for 6 months here in Brazil and in december I`ll be taking my 5th kyu test. How long have you been practicing aikido? you`ve gotten your 2nd kyu really fast, how many days a week do you practice aikido? Thanks !!

Linda, very nice and precise. I am sure it is the way you have been taught. But: I would have squirmed out of your ikkyo pins - please put your inside knee at my lower ribs, not my arm pit. Kaitenage, please push down my arm, not over my head. Kotegaishi/oroshi, nice three palms up throughout, but there is no kotegaishi pin. In Ki Society, we finish our techniques with the feet together, not feet apart. Overall, congratulations for passing your test. I am sure a lot of work went into it.
