Newark, N.J. and the people loved themselves some Linda Jones & Little Jimmy Scott. Whether fan, peer, musician, another singer, activist or politician they turned out to support the shows. Some of those same faces would still be showing up for Jimmy Scott some 50 years later. In the 1950's according to author Nathan Heard (writer of best selling book "Howard Street"), who wrote about all the Jazz Clubs & Bars up and down Howard Street from their hey-day the late 1940's thru the early 1960's. Back then Jimmy Scott, Billie Holiday, Redd Foxx may all be appearing in one of those clubs at the same time. WOW! What great access to the best shows! Nathan said; "Little Jimmy Scott was important to the people of Newark. During the 1950's they embraced him as one of their own, he was beloved and to them Jimmy was a "THEIR super star" like a Michael Jackson." That's how they treated him. BTW, Michael recorded Jimmy's first big hit record "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" (from 1950) on his (Michael's) first solo album. ~ Linda Jones time came a little bit later....... She was loved for her depth as Jimmy was. They were both touched by God. Both originals, one of a kind, authentic entertainers that would never be forgotten. I had never heard such emotion until I discovered this record in a stack of 45s in the hosue. It was so much emotion that it scared me in a sense. Sounds like she means every word that she is singing.
If Linda’s voice doesn’t make your heart feel a certain way, well than all I’ll call that is a shame, so much passion and love, and you know damn well she recognizes that she could sing her heart out better than anyone contemporary colleague or peer. It was aboutn1986 when i was 24yo when a buddy of mine who was about 21yo was playing it and i was in love with her!! About 2years after that I'm at a Afrikan heritage festival in weequahic park and went to one of the vendors for a slice of watermelon and some iced tea and the.vendor was playing a Linda Jones song inside her tent with a.large photo of her in a frame,so i said to her,hey you like Linda too,and she said of course thats my daughter! I agree with you 100% she is in a class of her own, to me shes the greatest ever female singer taken from us tragically so young. Its scandalous that many so called singers, over the years, have gained far more publicity and success than her.
