Everytime i hear her, it just creates a joy I can't describe. I was lucky enough for her stuff to be contemporary with my young adulthood. As time goes by, I come to appreciate the artists of that era all the more. Everyone from Jackson Browne, to the Eagles, to ELP, to Yes, it was just an extraordinary era for music.

Since you have covered so many of the genres shes’s done, you must check out “Pirates Of Penzance” that she did on Broadway from the film. Her solo is Poor Wandering One… it’s light opera and really shows her range. Her albums are so beautifully produced and great songs. She says herself that she really has a soft spot for those ballads and she’s done so many perfectly. So much emotion but so clear and not tricky… just pure.

Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock. She has had so many hits such as "Blue Bayou", "You're No Good", "Long Long Time", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Desperado" etc. The Eagles were her backing band till they went out on their own & she has covered a lot of their songs.

As you probably know Linda and Dolly have been close friends for decades. Linda included this on her Prisoner in Disguise album, there's even a note on the original album jacket from Dolly thanking her for using it. Kevin Costner was a big fan of this version and he brought it to Whitney Houston's attention when they were looking for a song to use in The Bodyguard which is how it came to be reworked and included. Actually the Prisoner in Disguise LP has some really great songs on it including the title track which Linda performs with backing vocals from JD Souther. It's beautifully plaintive and melancholy.

I am so glad that you covered this version. It’s an often overlooked cover. Linda Ronstadt is a favorite of mine. She has been successful in every genre she has tried and recorded in. Rock, Latin, country, folk, and opera! She has racked up so many awards Including Kennedy Center, Honors, 11 Grammys, CMAs, Tony’s, inducted into the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame, received the National Medal of Arts and Humanities, etc. and was often referred to as the queen of rock. Her discography is amazing. It’s just heartbreaking what has happened to her voice forcing her to retire (vocal paralysis). I look forward to you covering more of her.

Linda & Dolly were good friends & Linda covered her friend's song the same year it was written. 20 yrs. later, Whitney didn't know what to do with it. David Foster, her arranger found Linda's version. He said that Whitney's version was almost a direct lift from Linda's.
@gonetoutah
@gonetoutah Год назад
Dolly wrote the son when she broke up with Portter Wagner. Linda heard it and sang it some years later. Then Whitney Houston heard it and was singing it for her movie, but was only singing two verses. Dolly called to ask if they knew there were three verses. Whitney didn't know because she was singing it like a cover of Linda. Dolly sent the missing verse and Whitney added it to her rendition. I think the above is the reason Whitney's version is so much like Linda's.

Lindas version of I Will Always Love You is more countryfied 5:13 than Whitney Houstons version, but also more emotionally dynamic with her thick, rich muscular vocal. Linda did not release it as a radio hit single, but appeared on her platinum selling "Prisoner In Disguise" album recording of 1976.
@mickdenis6630
@mickdenis6630 2 года назад
David Foster who produced the version of the song from the Bodyguard, wasn't familiar with the song. He drove into Long Beach to get a copy of Dolly's record. The record didn't have Dolly's recording but they had the album Prisoner In Disguise with Linda's recording. David said as soon as he heard Linda's recording he knew what they could do with the song. When Dolly found out David/Whitney were using Linda's recording as a template for theirs, she called David on the phone to give him the final verse, which Linda had no included in her recording. I am not a musician, but have several musician friend who all say the same thing. Foster's arrangement is taken from the Ronstadt recording, they just played with the melody line. Of course Houston's recording is not the same as Dolly or Linda's, in the respect that the song was not about romantic love, it was written as an owed to mentor song. What I like about Linda's cover is she hangs on the word "always", instead of the world "I".
@TheDivayenta
@TheDivayenta 2 года назад
Linda did it Dolly’s way! An often overlooked reason for Whitney’s huge success on this song in addition to her great voice was the brilliant arrangement by the “ Hitman” himself, David Foster. I’d love to see you react to his songs for Earth, Wind and Fire ( After the Love Has Gone), Chaka Khan ( Through the Fire), Cheryl Lynn ( To Be Real), Chicago ( Glory of Love, You’re the Inspiration) , Celine Dion ( The Prayer) , Boz Scaggs ( Love Look What You’ve Done To Me) , Kenny Loggins ( Heart to Heart) and so many more!
