This is a great tip. The high cut on the cab is essential but I never thought of going from 0 up. Way easier to hear when it sounds right. Coming down from 16k messes with your hearing. Ear fatigue is a real problem when tweaking.

Yeah it’s definitely the best way to do it .. thanks for watching 🙏

Wow! I love you man! I’ve come to that discovery along time ago. Back in 77 when I was a kid with a stereo I was always told to leave everything at the flat response. And they were right. You got too much trouble. Your ear tends to like it for a moment then all of a sudden it gives you a headache. Guitar, those days were never that bright specially two vamps I think when you heard a record, those things were added, and increased by the sound engineer, which sounds cool on the record. When line 6 came out with their first digital amp. I loved it I could control that trouble and it sounded great, now that I have a helix for the last eight years, it took me a long time to figure out what was wrong with it. Simply put I didn’t understand high cuts or low cuts but now this little trick that you’re explaining will make it a heck of a lot easier to get the right tone, I think you’re pure genius the open door concept you’re just a genius thank you for this great tip I live in Indiana. I wish I could go out to the United Kingdom and meet up with you and buy you a pint of stout or an ale or something that you like and say thanksso anyway thanks!

My Johnny may be one of your most useful videos to date on tone , thats exactly one of my issues with Helix is finding that sound that doesnt sound like a blanket over my power cab, great info bro , i mean mate , have a good day

Ive been going back and forth with the hi cut since the cab update. At first I was setting it to 7-8k like I did before the update. When the update came out I saw so many people saying they stopped cutting so I started doing that. But recently I have once again been cutting down to somewhere around 7k. It 100% makes it sound more realistic and natural sounding.

Yeah you have to do a cut . To my ears anyway .

Great high cut method, Jonny, thanks. I'll be adapting that. For me, I'll also tend to cut the low end enough to get out of the way of the the kick, bass or whatever else is hanging around there, then I'm eventually tweaking it once I test it with the band, too. There's never an absolute "one fit's all" setting, as I'm sure you well know, too many variables. Speaking of, appreciate you mentioning how the pitch shifters can add to the high end, also. Cheers.

Hey Jonny, It is so much easier to find the sweet spot using the open door technique. Thanks! I use two Powercabs with the speaker emulations and do the hi/low cuts there. Any tips or suggestions for that type of rig? Great info like always!!

Thanks mate , I never used the onboard powercab sims , I just used it in flat response . It was easier that way . Same technique tho .

Good stuff Johnny. Most of the presets I see online have a high cut around 6k +/- 2k range but it depends on you pickups and amp. Keep it up. Thanks. And YES we F'in want it yeah!

Great video sir. Really helped me understand a better way to set some of the eq by going low and moving higher sill sounds good to my ears. Funny how the simple things just elude us. I got a question for ya. Does Helix have a version of the Digitech Drop Pedal? So i can be in standard tuning ( E ) but engage that and bring myself to E flat for those old 80's Hair Band tones. They seem to love using 1/2 step down lol. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am trying to gather as much as i can so I can decide what to get when my 54BD comes very soon 😇

yeh good but not enough try to use eq after the amp high shelf and high cut and wen you do that make sure your cab its off to hear the nasty fizz about 8 k and 10 k even try double eq technic then turn you cab and don't over do it with eq and also turn off the delay just amp no effect all off

Yeah, but it sounds a bit dead and artificial after a while. If you take a full blown plexi sound like VanHalen (or Greenday for that matter :) ) there is a lot going on in the 6-10k range but current digital stuff isn't able to faithfully reproduce it. Right now it's still "angry painful fizz". IRs were a real breakthrough years ago but I think we need something better now. We need real speaker modeling now.

We have the ability to change cabs , change mics, move them into all positions , Cut them accordingly . The tools are there .

What's the advantage of using Cab Block Hi-Cut vs Global EQ Hi-Cut? Legit question!!!
@JonnyLeeguitarist
@JonnyLeeguitarist 2 месяца назад
If you’re using a Global setting , every amp is different, you’re never gonna get the same results . There’s no real right or wrong way tho .

Silly question but how did you get your Greenback 30 to display in the color green?

It’s a filter in post editing , on MacBook , helps it stand out on the screen .
