In this installment, I explore the idea of using a split block as an alternative (and possibly preferred) method to using dual cabs and mics in the Line 6 Helix. I also discuss the reasons one may want or not want to use each different method in Mono and Stereo paths. Hope you enjoy the video and please hit the subscribe button if you like what I doing...thanks in advance!

Jason, I'm a Helix Newb. Just got it a week ago, and haven't really started using it yet. I'm in the "figuring it out" stage. I've used the Axe FXII for a few years, but just started learning the Helix. And I just discovered your video tutorials yesterday. Just watched the first 3 "How to Create a Great Tone" videos, and i wanted to tell you that I LOVE the way you explain everything. I eat that stuff up. It may even be too much explanation for some (not for me), but I'd rather have that than the guys who assume you already know a lot more than you may actually know, so they move so fast through the stuff that I'm left in the dust. Wait! What? What did you just do?? Ya know what I mean? Anyway, THANK YOU! I can't wait to learn more!

Thanks to your video for the first time I figured out how to run 2 cabs and In 5 min I got it sounding better than I ever have before.

Thanks Jason. I just bought a Helix 3.0, and your videos are the best way to learn this beast. Already viewed 4 and making the right adjustments already. What a tool this is. Not sure what I do with all my amps and mics now!

Same here, around 3 months in with it. My buyers remorse literally disappeared after a few days, and I've never played guitar more/sounded this great in my life. Enjoy bro

Jason, thank you so much for the time you have given, I for one really appreciate it. Already in just 2 hours have learnt so much more about the helix and seen some things that I would never have dreamed of trying. I look forward to your next video on sag, hum, bias etc. I have researched about these things on Google but they are real technical explanations from physics guys. The best thing I've found to do is twiddle the knobs and see what happens but little knowledge is dangerous, I would much rather know this is why this works or this is why this may not work so good. Thanks again in advance from the UK.

So happy to hear the videos have been of use to you :-) It is my pleasure! I have another video coming soon about using IR's vs. stock cabs and then next week should have the one about sag, bias etc. Thanks for watching and the comment!

The videos help me. Me a lot considering my use of modeling technology has been different. I have always used modelers only for peddle configs through an existing amp, and now I'm thinking of moving to Helix to streamline stuff and these videos show I can do all I want and more. Side note has anyone mentioned you sound exactly like Joel Hoekstra from Whitesnake when you talk
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites 6 лет назад
+Chris Green that is great if you can streamline down to just the Helix. That is what have done and haven't regretted it at all. I will have to listen to some Joel Hoekstra vids to compare :-) I love his playing!

Great videos, Jason, I enjoyed watching all 3 on creating a great tone. One thing I was wondering about: do you use the global EQ or is it off ?
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites 6 лет назад
Thanks so much and very happy you are enjoying the videos! I have the global eq set to off for all of these.
@sjsphotog
@sjsphotog 4 года назад
Global EQ is maninly designed to help fix a bad acoustic hall/room/ venue you are playing live in and only for special cases. You dont want ALL your patches to be adjusted for your home studio/playing environment and you use EQ on each patch to fix those but global EQ should mainly be off. I would love for you to do a tutorial on how to get great doubling tones on the helix. Using various helix effects such as: the double take, chorus, pitch shifters, putting delay on one signal path that is hard panned, ects. But most importantly, how to avoid phaser issues??? so it sounds good in stereo and mono?????
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites 5 лет назад
I will see what I can do, but honestly I usually hate the sound of doubling FX. If I am in the studio I always just double track and then live just leave it alone and go with the single track. I know that is not much help, but just never been a big fan of doubling FX, especially in mono.

I'm getting my Helix LT in a couple weeks. My question is can you do all of this on the Helix itself or is this stuff you need to do on your computer/laptop? I've watched a few of your videos and I've learned a lot and they helped me decided on the Helix over other products on the market. So, thank you for that. Lol.
@sjsphotog
@sjsphotog 4 года назад
Yes you can do the same things just using the hardware unit on the floor but you wont be able to get new amps/effects and bug fix updates without connecting it to your computer via USB cable. Its also a little easier to edit / create patches using the software editor than on the unit but it does work, just need to know the differences and how to do it with knobs instead of sliders.

I have always split my cabinets like that but simply because that is how I taught myself to do it and didn't realize there was a dual cab option I guess. It's fun to split a cab with an IR too.. there are a bazillion ways to dial Helix in. Q. I was surprised you didn't touch on the crossover. Do you use it at all? I find it can be great for EQ'ing the two cabs. Great vids thanks for sharing your knowledge on this stuff.

Cool, yep, thought about that myself, since I was typically running parallel IR blocks and using the splitter block for balance. I wonder if the dual cabs use less DSP than two singles?
@JasonSadites

Thanks and yeah it works very nicely! Not too sure about the DSP usage though. I guess I assumed it would use the same amount but not certain.

You can see the list of amps/cabs/effects and their DSP usage for each block. Stereo obviously takes up more DSP than mono. There is an associated video as well on the botton of this page: benvesco.com/store/helix-dsp-allocations/

My pleasure and thank you for watching :-) I haven't felt the need to use IR's with the Helix up to this point. I am so happy with the stock cabs, I haven't even tried any IR's yet with it. IMO, Line 6 did a spectacular job with the stock cabs.

Hey Jason, how are you? I´ve a doubt...in my band, i´m a single guitar player. For live gigs, how can i made a stereo channel? I want to use 2 channels on the sound mixer, to make a "fatter sound". Cheers from Brazil \m/
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites 5 лет назад
Hey Raphael, I am well! You certainly can setup a stereo patch. You just need to add stereo blocks in your path instead of mono ones. It will only really sound stereo if you have FX such as chorus or delay which actually send a different signal to each side. Hope that made sense and was of some help.
@RaphaelOlmos
@RaphaelOlmos 5 лет назад
Jason Sadites Thanks a lot for your reply! Do you think that using a delay in the end or on the begging of some signals it will work? How do you think that could work to play metal riffs, “fatter” using this delay?! With a little mix or little feedback?!

Great video again. Have you tried the helix into a power amp and real cabs? For small bar gigs I use two 1x12s & not many videos out there or info on creating patches using this method. 🤘

Thanks so much Richard! I haven't tried running into power amp and real cabs simply because I no longer own any :-) I did do that when I owned the Atomic Amplifire and got some great sounds, but I am so happy with the cab section and mic selections in the Helix I have been really happy just using FRFR with it.

Jason do you have a video with a tutorial for Line 6 Helix with dual outputs one to P.A ( XLR) Left and right and other to amps with line Left and Right, for my amps ( Mesa boogie and A Fender amp ) and remove cab and reverb, because the amps have reverb. But how to make this conection in Line 6 edit

Anyone having issues with this running 2.82? I'm a newish helix user and was trying to blend two cabs together with this method, but for whatever reason when I try blending with the split A/B function and move the fader it pans the audio left and right. Any suggestions?

I posted this on the line6 forums as well. But figure you may know as well. Does the Helix make an easy way to pull in one of the Templates that are in in the templates set list? Or do you have to go to the template setlist, find one, copy it, then go back to your current set list and paste it? I think that is the case, but would be nice if Line6 made an easy way to actually pull the template into your current preset. If not it, is just a set list really. Be cool to be in a preset and have option, copy from template then have a scroll menu that goes through the template set list to select which to pull in. I am Sandman69 on the forums, as an FYI.
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites 6 лет назад
That is a good question that I am actually not sure of the answer to. Wish I could be of more help in that.
@spsanders69

No worries. You are TONS of a help in other aspects. Just start looking at some of your lesson videos as well. I have been playing since I was a teenager in the 80s, but I never spent enough time to learn a lot of theory. Simply learned songs and a little this and that. Really appreciate your concise videos. Been thinking of taking up some lessons again, but life, family, kids, church, work, doesn't leave too much spare time ;). So video lessons may be a good thing for me to better understand the why. I think that the Template Setlist is simply a setlist and nothing special about it. It seems to hold just a basic setup to support different connection types (4CM etc) and not a true template. Would be so nice if they could allow us to start a preset by a right click. Actually, guess can simply export a template preset to a file in the default directory so can use the right click -> import -> browse directory for preset to load a template.

So a dual cab setup by default is always panned hard left/right. Can that be adjusted, or need to do it the way you do it here to blend the tones?
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites 6 лет назад
It is, but if you place any mono block after it, it will pan them both to center.
@spsanders69
@spsanders69 6 лет назад
Jason Sadites gotcha. Just like real pedals. I wonder how much more DSP the stereo effects eat up? I already noticed I guess hitting the DSP limit when some amps or effects get grayed out. Sometime relatively quickly. Seems some amps eat more than others and some modulation effects seem to be big consumers of DSP. Not that it is a biggy just throwing stuff in a chain to see the impact. Plenty DSP there.
@christianboddum8783

adding a simple eq.(mono) after the dualcab will sum the stereo signal. Leaves more room for a second efx line ;-). I'd love to send you one of my presets with ping-pong Delay. I run the XLR's 70% left 70%right But, when activating the ping-pong the XLR's goes 100L/100R ;-) Surprise the FOH guy!! I'm still not sure if I keep the pan on my amps, they are fed before the XLR's. They are stereo, but I gues the complete pan is right at the end. Let me know if you wanna try it.
@JasonSadites
@JasonSadites 6 лет назад
+Christian Boddum yes adding the mono eq block after the cab was covered in my pt. 2 video in this series. Pretty much any mono block after the cab will sum it to mono. Thanks for the comment :-)
