Line 6 POD - the original! Buy one for pennies...

I bought my POD way back in '99. Twentieth century guitar modelling technology, but still a fantastic bit of kit. None of your menus, software updates, or connectivity hassles - this was designed for guitarists who were used to amplifiers and physical controls...
In this film, I show the main features of the POD, and how versatile it is. If it's purity you're after, buy all the guitar amps that are modelled: it'll cost you tens of thousands. It's either that, or find one of these on eBay for a few thousand pennies....
Enjoy and share!

I’ve always said if you can’t get a great sound out of one of these, it’s on you. Probably 90% of people who bought and used them did very little tweaking. These are insanely powerful. And intimidating. You have to work on your sounds a lot depending on your gear. One thing I learned about sounds developed at home -the better they sound by themselves, the less you’ll be able to hear them in a band context. I’m wondering if all the people who slag the POD 1)ever actually used one and 2)ever actually tweaked one until it worked for them. I had to completely rethink how to program my XT Live after my first band practice with it. I had to learn about how different playing at home and playing in a band were, how NOT to do it(scoop those mids and crank the bass is always a bad idea with a band, though it sounded epic in my headphones) Still have my XT Live and while not my main sound anymore, it’s an amazing learning tool. I never got to play thru any of those real amps or effects, so that let me experiment to my heart’s content and it also taught me how big a difference things like speaker cabs or mics make. For $40 it’s a complete win, even if you just use it for effects. Great review!

Nice, I had one back in the day it was a revelation for someone cash poor that just wanted a good variety of sounds. As you say if it sounds good to you it is good, ignore the snobs.

Anyone else used to drool over all the cool guitars and guitar accessories in the Musician's Friend catalog in the late 90s/early 2000s? At the time, I used to think the Pod 2.0 was the pinnacle of amp emulators. I know people poop on it nowadays, but I think it's still a solid device.

I gotta admit I'm 4 years late to the party but I really enjoyed you video. Very informative. I own the V2 and run through the torpedo c.a.b emulator. I also own the POD HD500 to but I prefer the sounds on the earlier pods and the ease of use. Thanks for video I really did learn alot from you. Best wishes CJ

Awesome review... and if you hold tap tempo, the drive and channel volume have a decibel boost on/off function. You get a trebble booster hitting the front of the vox CA30... garb your Sixpense lads for some instant "Mayhem"... LOL. I have used the 2.0 version since 2000 for headphone practice. Love it

Recently acquired the 2.0 version and am loving it. Granted I am a 50+ year-old drummer. But I do remember what a straight amp sounded like miked into a PA through various cabs, and I have to say this sounds pretty damn spot on for what was going on back in the “20th Century”. I’ve sent the signal from this over a PA and through my headphone amp and it just sounds good and clean. I’ve run it in tandem with another guitar interface, re-amping one into another - and actually then to another - which allows for layering up an incredible wall of sound; all of which can be controlled by a midi foot switch. How freaking cool is that. And all for just a few bucks. I love it.

Ive seen a really good rock covers band performing at a wedding and the bassist and guitarist used a pod straight into the PA. It sounded like a well mixed CD playing. Why carry big amps when you don't need to 🙂

If you hold down the Tap button and turn the Drive knob a distortion booster kicks in and you can add compression too. I like putting different speaker cab sims from the POD on the amps as well.

I remember the Pod when it first was released in the 90s, and I thought it was terrible and I still think it is in 2023. Back in the 90s it made more sense to either get a small Marshall combo amp or get a second hand Marshall head (I had the JCM2555) with a nice JCM900 Lead 1960A 4x12 cab, and then add a multi FX unit. All that would have cost around £1000 in say the mid-1990s, and you could sell the amp and upgrade to other things later. The Pod sounds fizzy, thin and unrealistic with no real valve tone.
@Syklonus
@Syklonus 4 года назад
The PODs were great for clean tones and even some crunch sounds were very usable, but for high gain rock or metal sounds it was just awful. I started with the 2.0 version of the POD and I couldn't get a decent heavy tone out of it at all. It was just soft and fizzy, and nothing mixed well at all. The effects were great though, and on the cleans they sounded very good, so as an FX unit and/or clean preamp it was really excellent. The PODxt was my thing, because you could make chains, add pre-amplifier stomp boxes to tighten up high gain sounds, and even change the virtual mic axis. I used one for about seven years, both for recording demos and live shows (straight into the PA). The convenience factor was off the scale, and it really helped me creatively.

Very useful, clever and funny demo! I bought one complete in box for 35 euro's, its a brilliant tool for anyone whether you're a beginner or a professional. I went over to a friends house where we A/B'd this thing against more expensive things such as a Kool & Elfring Tube Pre-Amp, a Carl Martin analog multi-fx unit, and i have to say the POD to this day holds up quite well! It seems a little bit more quiet and a bitt less responsive than the other pieces of gear i just named, but its hardly noticeable and nothing a bit of EQ can't fix. I am now hunting down a FBV-4 floorboard controller to make full use of its features! I'll report back a.s.a.p when i have more experience with this cheap, fun and indestructible piece of kit.
@DanBakerMusic
@DanBakerMusic 4 года назад
Quite so - you can tell the difference between this and other stuff, but it’s a workhorse, with nothing on it that you don’t need...just a word of caution: the floorboards that went with them aren’t so well built, but yes - it does allow access to multi FX and other stuff including the very useable Wah

Excellent Review I'm also a Drummer but a wanna be Frustrated Guitar Player. Most of the reviews on this Piece of equipment were only dogging it out, and saying this and that new Equipment is better .....we all know that, that isn't the point of reviewing a The POD of 20 years ago.....right mate? I think it's a great piece of equipment even by todays standards It's the Player not the the equipment, you can have all the Super Gear in the world but if your playing is Rubbish All the bells and whistles won't help. Thanks for the very informative Review Mate.

@jonathansmith2710 Год назад
Interesting, my complaint is that it puts out too much bass! I think it depends on what you're playing it through. I'm currently plugged into aux stereo inputs of a 5.1 home audio system and need to turn subwoofer down a lot to cut down the heavy bottom. It's a good way to get cranked amp tones at home lower volume levels.
