When you "loosened up" your Nuthatch I figured you were nuts too but I must admit it turned out great. 😊 I think one of the biggest things for a budding artist is to get over the fear of failing or not having a painting turn out when you do try a new technique. It's only paper and paint. Way easier to start anew than sculpting a chunk of marble.

Its really preference more that it is suitability. Any paper can be used for any subject and style. In general Hot Press paper holds crisp detail better and keeps colors more intense. Cold Press shows texture more but handles water a little better staying evenly wet longer.

For people paranoid about the open bottle of a terrifyingly staining ink, you can reduce the danger somewhat with a giant sponge. Cut out a hole in the middle that the ink bottle can fit into snuggly. It'll protect you from tipped bottles (short of a catastrophic earthquake) and some accidental drips.
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 8 лет назад
Thanks for the tip. I'm actually thinking of making a nice wood base for it to sit in.

Oh my gosh, that Strathmore 400 paper is such rubbish. I'm relatively new to watercolour and thought I was just unskilled, but when I switched to a different paper I realised that it wasn't me, it was the paper. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't layer like I wanted to, and I found it pilled up. Just rubbish.

I would have never been brave enough for loosening up as you did. Oh wow after watching how you went about with it and how well it makes the nuthatch pop with light & shadow, I’m going to see about giving it a try. Thanks for sharing this with us and I’m amazed at the amount of details that technic gave to the final results.

I have paintee reverse glass. To do your design on glass I used the speedball pen with India Ink. However on glass you gave to use a paper towel under your hand so the oils from your hand don't get on the glass. I took your advice and ordered the Silver Black Velvet Brushes. Also ordered my primary colors in the MGraham Paints. I learn from you every day. I can't wait to get my supplies so I can start painting. Dana

Hello Steve. Spring/Summer in South Africa and birds and blossoms aplenty. Such is the hand of God. Thank you for another lovely bird video. I can watch you paint for hours and learn something different each time. My teachers told me I was useless at drawing and painting and 61 years later I am proving them wrong. Fond wishes, Elizabeth
@mindofwatercolor

I never trust a teacher that says such things. I know instantly their agenda is off. I understand that some schools have to weed out students but artists learn differently. I've seen how artists who just don't get one medium or approach, totally shine with another. Glad you kept with it.

I agree about the Strathmore 400. If you work light and washy, with few layers, it works fine. For multiple layers, it doesn't work so well. I just upgraded from Strathmore to Arches, but if I'm doing line and wash or something quick and easy, I'll use the Strathmore rather than waste the Arches paper.
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 7 лет назад
Yes, not bad for those purposes. I'm finding there are some better choices though for cheap paper to do things like quick sketches or line and wash. Bee Paper's Super Deluxe sketchbook or Stillman & Birn's Beta series just to name two.

Steve, it is such a pleasure to watch how you handle sketching and painting birds. As a "certified master birder," I spend many hours in the field on my own and leading tours. But I never seem to take the time to actually stop, observe and record my observations in my field notebook/journal. Mind you, I always bring my basic watercolor kit into the field. . . and usually leave without sketching anything, mainly because I cannot get the "gestalt" of the bird onto paper. So frustrating. Yet each time I watch your videos, my resolve is renewed -- tomorrow I will try again! Thank you.

i found your channel a few weeks ago and I am so glad I did. your videos are wonderful and so informative. some artists have tutorials without showing us how they got from o e stage of the painting to another. I am a visual learner and I find your method of teaching to work great for me. i am a semi beginner but am progressing in my watercolor paintings quickly with your instruction. i love painting flowers. i am having trouble being loose with them. could you do a tutorial on some loose watercolor roses or flowers in general? i find myself being too stiff when I draw the rose first then I end up overworking the painting. Thanks again. love your channel!!

I have two questions for you! First one is just a silly one . . . you always seem to draw really slender birds. Have you considered painting some short, fat birds? Y'know, the ones shaped like gumdrops from the front? Or is that just kind of uninteresting for you? Second - and this might sound weird - how long does it usually take for your watercolor to dry? I live in a very arid place, and it seems like my watercolors take 10 minutes, tops, to dry. And it becomes very hard to work it even after 1 minute, so my washes have to be FAST. I don't feel like I can always take my time. Would it be easier if I had, say, a humidifier in my space? Or is this just kind of par for the road?
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 8 лет назад
What can I say. I draw and paint them the way I see them. 😉 My watercolor dries in about the same time. Maybe a little longer. We live in a fairly humid climate in South Carolina. It really depends more on the paper. 140 lb. dries more quickly than 300 lb. Hot press dries more quickly than cold press. And cheap paper (pulp or cellulose based) dried faster than high grade cotton paper. Also air movement makes drying faster than still air. A nearby fan or air vent will speed drying as will working outdoors where air tends to move around more. Humidity can be a bit of a factor too of course.
@TJtheBee
@TJtheBee 8 лет назад
Alright, I see . . . this is very telling. Sounds like I need to start looking around for a heavier grade paper and start playing around. Trouble is, of course, I am limited in finances. But it shouldn't be difficult to find SOMETHING to work with; I have two papers I use, a Coco Bee brand and a cheap Strathmore, so I think I should start playing between the two and see what I glean. Thanks for the advice!
