This is a simple exercise designed to stretch and develop sensitivity to proportion and balance.
Three rectangles of the same format are drawn. Each will have three horizontal lines added. At the addition of each line, pause to feel the proportions created by the division of the space.
The third and last line added to each rectangle is the most important and needs to be considered the most carefully, because the addition of this line should bring the design to completion.
The final line on the third rectangle is paced near to the top to counterbalance the other two lines being near to the bottom.
Think of this exercise as being like a musician practising scales. The goal is to try to create a balance that 'feels right'. Over many repetitions, the exercise will help deepen your sensitivity to proportion. That deeper appreciation will then make itself felt naturally in every piece you do.
