Not just afl but all sports when i was a kid and before Queensland began to dominate the origin, there used to be full blown fights the blues and maroons, a real hatred for each other

I'm a Eagles supporter, and God knows how much pain J.Hird has gifted my team, but those Hawks players were absolute dogs for getting him. This is notwithstanding the brawling from both teams earlier in the match.

I'm not condoning Hawthorn's actions here, but it's amazing how often Essendon is one of the teams involved whenever there's a heap of melee action in a match.
Watching this now, not a fan of either team, Hawks were by far the dirty ones who were way out of line for their actions in play. They also just stated throwing punches before any bombers players.
I'm the same. Not a fan of either club. However the Bombers had been dominating the Hawks for a few years prior to that game. Afterwards things changed. Say what you will about how that sort of physicality is bad for the game, in my opinion it's were champions are born and men are made.
This clip doesn't show the sniping Essendon did in the first half. Essendon had bullied the Hawks for years and continued this in the first half, including having Robbie Campbell taken off concussed. At half time Dermott had a word to a couple of Hawks players, telling them (in fewer words) this was not acceptable and to stand up for themselves. After this Essendon knew to not to cheap shot any Hawks because it would come back at them in a big way. The only time after this was when Lloyd ran past the ball and knocked out Sewell in Round 22, 2009, then spent the rest of the game running away from the ball to avoid being killed.

I was at this game Hahahahaha first game I ever went to Brother in law managed to get us tickets in the dry area of the mcg and on the opposite side to this, they turned the big screen off and I didn’t see a single punch thrown but the noise was unreal
Dermott actually told a couple of hawks to do this to overcome their psychological barrier against essendon and it worked. Reversed the situation. It was more about that than simply laying cheap shots.

People get so upset about fighting these days the only real effect of this one was it broke the hawks psychi barrier. I don't believe in sniping or cheapys but ive been on the end of hundreds. And there's certainly nothing wrong with a good blue to let the steam off and great to watch. So if you dont play the game leave it alone stop trying to make us wear skirts and FUCK OFF :)

This game really changed the course of history between both teams. Even though Hawks lost this game, they went on to become a very successful team over the next 15 years winning 4 premiership. Essendon have not won a final since the year of this melee

The moment Mark Johnson tried the hero tough guy stuff again like he had done throughout the match was always going to trigger a response from Vander and Co after their conversation with Dermott at half time. He went at Piciaone which started the first scuffle and from there the fuse had been lit. They no longer tried to be bullies after this.
Richie Vandenberg is on par with Nick Maxwell as the worst AFL/VFL captain in history. Good to see the dons pile on 9 goals straight after those muppets laid a dirty hit.

At the time Hawthorn was vilified as being thugs & hacks who started the whole thing. The media blamed the hawks 100%, putting it down to old style tactics of a bottom team trying to start fights to put-off the more talented top 8 side. But in the years to come blame has kinda shifted a bit; the narrative now is that the bombers had been snipers & bullies & this was the day the hawks finally said "no more". At the time nothing was even said about Johnson's tackle on Campbell but now it's come to represent the defining moment where it all started. The bombers ended up belting the hawks that day but other more talented clubs took notice & I remember the 3-peat Lions turned the tables on the dons the following week with a similar physical but far more controlled assault. The fortunes of both clubs were to go in vastly opposing directions the next 10 years so it's not hard to understand why the protagonists at Hawthorn are more than happy to talk about this day while no 1 at Essendon will discuss it.

@mylesusa For many years Essendon had routinely beaten Hawthorn and physically intimidated them as well. At halftime of this game, with the result looking the same way, past Hawthorn champ Dermott Brereton had seen enough and announced in the Hawthorn change rooms that the players were no longer to accept being stood over and it was time to 'draw a line in the sand'. Hence the on-field thuggery that ensued. It was ugly, but some say it was a pivotal moment in changing the culture at the club.

This was about Hawthorn finally standing up to the Bombers, who had physically dominated the Hawks for too long. Essendon's dominance over Hawthorn ended that day. The Hawks have won 10 of the past 14 games since then.
I think it was more about the Hawks players becoming un-hinged because they were being thrashed so badly, so they resorted to assaulting the Essendon players instead of actually playing footy. Everyone thinks it was some crazy thing that the Hawks had planned to finally stand up to the Bombers. It was actually just the Hawks players inability to keep a lid on their emotions.
i remember wasps and essendon having a right dust up years back,but this just tops it,these boys are tough hombres for sure.at least i think it was wasps,too many years have gone by,but i see its pretty much the same.
yeah good on ya champ, mark johnson was going around trying to bully everyone and cheap shoting all game, the scuffle in the middle before the big brawl was started by him being a dirty prick, vandenberg gave it to him and the rest of the team followed after that. We may have got smashed on the scoreboard but the bombers didn't try and be heroes again, right at this moment they are now our bitches and how sweet it is.
Haha, I think the reports of 2 million dollar fines, 2 years of no draft picks, no finals in 2013 and a 12 month sacking of James Hird are correct. But that was just the AFL, can't wait when ASADA give out their premiership.
We finished third.. One of our midfielders came second in the brownlow, we have arguably the best forward in the game. Rioli, Hogde, Smith, Puopolo etc etc. Oh and the 2008 PREMIERSHIP

The Hawks were not a great team at the time and Essendon were one of the best teams, and the Bombers could physically assert themselves against the Hawks. Hawthorn had "had enough", and decided to come out fighting. They got massacred in this game, but there is an argument that this was the start of a cultural change in the Hawks. Being dominated by Essendon made many of the Hawk old-boys demand change, and there was a lot of blood letting that occurred at the end of that season (and the next couple of seasons.) Clarko came in, and redesigned the team and altered their philosophy in how they selected players, which turned them into one of the most successful clubs of the modern era. Hawthorn really should thank Essendon for forcing the issue. On the other hand, when Essendon decided to do the same sort of thing with Lloyd and Sewell in 2009, but concussing someone is just a bit of a laugh, so there was no cultural change. Since laughing doesn't improve your footy, they soon decided to improve their performance by employing Stephen Dank. The rest is history.
