Sir very nice information...No one has as much information as you in all youtube channels
@gracenotes5379
@gracenotes5379 Год назад
Very nicely explained and filmed! The only thing I would like to suggest is using a DI box with that can take an XLR in on the _instrument_ / _line_ side (such as a Radial ProAV1) so that you get a +4dBu line level to 600Ohm balanced mic level _in_ _the_ _DI_ _box_ , and then adapting the XLR microphone output with a special unbalanced cable to a 3.5mm TRS plug for the RØDE Wireless Go transmitter. That way you don't risk using the DI box as a step-up transformer which can happen if you use it as you did in one of your examples (3:09) with a mixer _output_ to DI _output_ connection. Using a DI box backwards like that is not recommendable in my opinion.

Would it be ok with a -25db Attenuator cable and rca??
@gracenotes5379
@gracenotes5379 Год назад
Not exactly sure what scenario you "it" refers to, so I'll just reiterate my advice not to use a DI box backwards. There are devices that are designed to take line level down to microphone level, such as the Radial Engineering ProAV1, which would always be my preference. If cost or other constraints are forcing you to improvise, you really need more than 25dB to attenuation to get comfortably down to microphone level (50dB would bring 2V down to about 6mV, which is still a stronger signal than most dynamic microphones will give you).
@user-wn5qu9nd9b
@user-wn5qu9nd9b Год назад
@@gracenotes5379 "it" referring to the wireless go mate. rode mic go + attenuator cable plus rca connected to the sound mixer. So not even the -35gb cable this guy recommend wouldn't work well? cant spent that much more on the other solutions.
@gracenotes5379
@gracenotes5379 Год назад
Well, it might work. Just saying the 25dB you quoted would take a 2V line level signal down to 112mV which is way hotter than any microphone will put out. If the attenuator is the *only* thing between your line level signal and a microphone preamp, I'd want to make sure to get down below 10mV, which is 46dB below 2V. I'm not saying other values categorically won't work.

Why bothering with special attenuator cables instead of using the 'PAD' setting in the TX settings? I guess that's supposed to do exactly that - attenuating :). I doubt you'll damage the input with a standard line out, even if the level would be too high. But I have to say, ANY video on that matter is helpful, since RODE really fails completely on instructions and a proper manual for that thing. No pinouts, no exact technical data, let alone alot of 'hidden features' nowhere mentioned. So thanks for the video!

Been dealing with this myself. The output settings only apply to using the 3.5 mm not usb.Trying to record church services. Your answer is filmic pro app. Its expensive for a app. I think the android version is $15. But with the app you tap the settings icon then choose audio and set mic input to usb audio input. Now on the main recording screen to the right you will see a volume slider, on ios it may be at botton of screen im not sure. But it acts as a gain slider. Just like your gain (not volume but gain) knob on a soundboard. Pull it down untill your input sound no longer peaks. I am using the RCA option Gary shows in video. I have a slight hiss that I dont know where its coming from but other than that it works. Hope this helps.

@@GaryDmedia Hi again! I rec'd my attenuator cable today. I ohmed the tip and ring of one end and it does appear that the tip from one end connects to both the tip and ring of the other end, and the ring of that end connects to both the tip and ring of the other end as well (I believe that is what is expected based on prior comments). However, testing from the 3.5mm jack of my iPad, if I move the balance to the right I lose all the audio - center and left I get audio. So seems like it is not blending R+L but the cable sure seems like it should based on ohming it out. Also, I just connected my headphones through the attenuator cable and did a left and right channel test and I'm getting separate left and right channels through the headphones. I thought I'd be hearing the left and right tones through both ears, but I'm not. Thoughts?

If I have a DI-box with -40dB attenuation, can I skip the 35dB attenuator cable? I am guessing it is less attenuation that your setup with -20bB on the DI-box and -35 on the cable. 2. I notice in most videos about DI boxes, the instrument is plugged into the DI box's input and the DI box's output is plugged to the mixer's input. How come in this application, the source (the mixer) is going into the output on the DI box and the recorder (the Rode Wireless Go Transmitter) is connected to the input on the DI box? Does the DI box work in both directions? Thanks again for all the help!

If you pair this with some sort of headphone amp to amplify the mic level speaker signal it can be done but that's not very elegant. It also depends on what kind of headphones you're trying to drive and how many ohms they are rated.

No Walter, as explained in the video there is no output from the mixer low enough. All outputs will overdrive the input of the transmitter. On the other hand, you can connect the output of the WG2 receiver to a channel input on the mixer and use the system like a cordless microphone.

My question is would you recommend this or will the 1/4th make the Rode Go 3.5mm jack loose or damage it? I am looking for the best solution without hurting my gear. I did see the Rode XLR PRO +. Thanks Gary! This is very helpful. One thing that I don't understand is that why do you not need a DI box for method 1? For method 2 and 3, you seem to be using both a DI box and a attenuation cable to reduce the power.

The RCA tape outputs output no more than 0.5v. The output of the Main XLR outputs are 1volt or sometimes more. It is always good to check the specifications for your mixer and you will find some 6.5mm outputs are the same as the XLR outputs.

Actually, for references purpose: RCA out is categorised as -10dBV (Semi-pro equipment) with ~ 0.316volts XLR/TRS outputs are categorised as +4dBu (Pro equipment) with ~ 1.228volts Both are LINE level outputs and are equally hot at ~1volt range. I might add for inexperienced & potentially excited enthusiasts who may seek to export some these techniques to other applications , it should be noted for beginners that using the passive DI box backwards, as is done here, turns a low impedance line signal into a ‘Hot’ amplified signal (the reverse of what a DI box is typically designed for) - Don’t reverse a DI box without due consideration and precaution. 😊 Additionally, of the three methods described here, people might be interested in learning how to get the best quality audio from a venue mixer / sound system. Unfortunately budget (cheap) DI Boxes have poor quality transformers- they will degrade sound quality. If you we’re prepared to spend extra, you could get a DI specifically designed for the purpose of taking audio ‘out’ (and not using a guitar/keyboard DI box backwards) Unfortunately, a high quality transformer DI can run into hundreds of dollars for something that will preserve HQ sound. In the scenario featured in this RU-vid, a DI box is completely unnecessary unless a very long cable run from the transmitter to the mixing desk is required. The alternate option suggested here is an ‘RCA’ cable mated to a TRS ‘Line’ attenuated cable - RCA & LINE outputs host different electrical metrics which presents impedance mis-match issues when simply adapted in this way - the difference between JACK LINE & RCA is more than the shape of plugs and sockets and ideally would be first electrically converted to one standard or the other for best audio. Of the three suggested connectivity tips, and options are not limited (as they sometimes can be with venue systems) and High fidelity sound is the goal, then the preferred option for ‘best quality audio’ is to take audio from the mixers TRS or XLR line outs (called Monitor, AUX , Aux (mono)send etc) directly connected to the attenuation cable., which incidentally is actually what this cable is made for - no other devices required. You could of course take either of the mixers Left or Right main OUTPUTS via attenuation cable, however audio would only be mono, but fine for centred vocals. All this advice is subject to recommendations from respective Brand names - not all these Camera transmitter s / receiver s operate technically identically - check with manufacturer first. Just because something works a few times, does not mean it is safe for the indefinite duration- slowly occurring damage can be resulting.

thank you for the in depth video! i recently bought the Xenyx X1222USB and my need is to connect 6 mics to it. it could be 6 XLR lav mics to start with, but as i now collect info on how to make it a wireless solution, ive encountered problems in process of thoughts. also, i saw there is a "wireless ME" by now which happens to be a bit more affordable. anyway, as every receiver can connect 2 transmitters, i wonder if there is a way to have 3 receivers connected to the mixer simultaneously. the scenario is 6 ppl at a table talking (podcast/just chatting), recording with pc/laptop in OBS studio (so the usb connection of x1222USB is crucial, i reckon).

If you are hoping to connect the receiver output to the F3 you will need to split the stereo mini jack to two separate XLR plugs. The phantom power would have to be switched off or you may blow up your WG2 receiver. A stereo 3.5mm plug to 2 XLR plugs.

Hi Gary, thank you for making this super informative video. I'm hoping you can provide some advice... When converting a balanced XLR output (sound desk) to the Rode Wireless Go 2, can I get away with NOT running a DI Box and only use an adjustable Line Level Control (Attenuator) box from Jaycar Electronics? I intend to run XLR - RCA adaptor cable to the Line Level Control (Attenuator), Attenuator RCA output to the Rode Wireless Go (via RCA - 3.5mm adaptor) I am recording an event which is taking place in 3 seperate auditoriums simultaneously (3 sound desks) and I'm hoping to avoid purchasing a tone of additional equipment if it's not necessary. I figure having a slightly noisey audio feed from a sound desk would be far better than capturing audio from the speakers. Thanks in advance for you advice. Cheers

I imagine the Jaycar actuation device is AA3078 the one designed to connect two RCA's to two RCA outputs. If it works for you cool. I do wonder if the output from the attenuator will still be too high for the input if the Rode WG2 transmitter. It would be worth a try. They are only about AU$10.
