The question I’m asking, it seems no one has a direct answer for, or at least not that I’ve found so far. I have 2 Mackie Thump Go speakers (200 watts each,) and I am running from a TC Helicon Play Acoustic microphone and guitar effects processor with DI into a Harbinger Mixer, which goes into the speakers. When running into powered speakers with line/mic switch, which should be engaged, considering both mic and guitar are being used from the main right and left outputs of the mixer ? Particularly in this instance where I have 2 outputs on my guitar. (Channels 2 and 3 of the mixer, and the mic in channel 1) One for the onboard preamp to the humbuckers, and one for the piezo. I blend both sounds for a fully rounded sound when playing alone. It seems the level was too low when I tried using line level settings. But perhaps it is because I didn’t have the volume of the faders at UNITY in the Mackie App. Thank you kindly, in advance!

Thank you for you video ! I have a question regarding my future setting. To avoid unplug cable from my gears (bass guitar, pedals etc), i have ordered a DI box. I will use an XLR cable between the DI Box and my Audio Interface (a berhinger). So my question is : does i need to select line or inst ? As the DI box convet the signal to low impedance, i suppose i need to select line option ? Thanks !

So analog synths would have to go through a line input, not instrument input? I was hoping I could use it in conjunction with a mic but I won’t be able to do it at the same time if I can’t use the instrument input. Damn! Should’ve considered this before buying my interface.

Great video; although it is not clear how do you know when you are clipping, except if you look at the light ring. Also the interface has levels too, doesn't it? I have a Focusrite too, and the panel itself has a gain for the monitor outputs and headphone output; on top of the gain for each of the hardware input... So how do you set those to have a starting point? Because if you move back and forth between the instrument volume knob, the gain knob on your input on the interface and the level slider in the audio interface settings, there is no clear way about how to set up the reference level.
@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 2 года назад
I think the controls on the Focusrite are not very precise. So you need trial and error and monitoring the levels in your DAW. I talk a bit about that in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ASntRNmJMFQ.html It's a fair point. I also have a Zen Go Synergy Core Interface which is much more precise and therefore easier to replicate settings.

I have the 212 interface and it has buttons for “air” “instrument”. Nothing specifically for mics other than the phantom button. I figured the instrument is for my guitar and keyboards, but is “air” for mics? I usually fiddle around until I get a good recording, but I would like to put my fiddle down 😎Generally I don’t need an interface as I record, mix and master on my Tascam 24 track Portastudio. I like it’s deeper softer sound. My DAW results in a hard edge, brittle sound (I either have a crummy DAW or don’t know how to use it properly) However, I use a computer program for video for which I need my mics and interface for voice over. Thanks for any help.
@jeffcuthbert6078
@jeffcuthbert6078 3 года назад
"Air" colors anything going through the preamp (i.e. inst/line level/XLR). This is a good video about the Solo, which is basically the same as the 2i2 less a channel: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VSgzF79ivd0.html
@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 3 года назад
the 'air' option is to model a particular kind of pre-amp - it is particularly useful for vocals and acoustic instruments. If you want to record with a mic, then you should use an XLR lead. The interface will then expect a mic input. If you use a 1/4" jack, then you select instrument for a guitar or similar, deselect instrument for line input. As you only want to use the interface for voiceovers, then use XLR for microphones, and experiment with the 'air' to see which sounds better for you. On or off. The 'instrument' will have no effect if plugging in a mic.

I finally got some sound to come out of an amp/speaker, from my mic and from my guitar. Next step is to get it into my computer and record it there, and then play it on my amp/speaker. I'm not worried about the quality of the sound. I have a Focusrite Solo. Will the sound go into my computer on the Solo's USB connection? I'll be using an e-board that was recommended by Focusrite users, or a simpler if I can find one, to start. Thanks.

Sorry if you have replied to this before in another video; I haven't seen all of them yet... I am mostly a songwriter (and bassist) and I want to record stuff at home, so... I want to simulate having pedals in front of the amp (dirt pedals) and other pedals (modulation) in the fx loop. What is the best way to do this for recording? Should i use dirt pedals -> pre amp -> modulation pedals -> cab simulator (something cheap...) -> usb interface? I also use Reaper as a DAW, nowadays. Maybe using a cab sim on the daw and keep everything else?

Great video. Beginner here. But a Rode NT5 condenser mic and discovered an Audiobox USB 96 could not sufficiently power it. I ordered a DBX 286s preamp/processor. My question is, since my audio interface does not have line in, will my setup be less than optimal if I have to use a line to XLR cable as opposed to line to line? Hi Madam! Hope that you are doing fine. There are no words that I can come up with to say about you Madam. You are like the encyclopedia in this sector. I am new to all this recording and stuff. My question is, is there any interface or sound module like dexibell vivo sx7, which can be connected to a digital piano to generate different tones without connecting it to a computer? Like piano to interface and then to amp or speaker. My idea is to buy a digital piano but I also like to have some extra tones to play with. But it costs more when a digital piano has many tones. All I want to hear, is some extra tones on my amp or speaker by connecting to a medium which doesn't face any latency. If this is possible then I can save some money. If you can give me an insight, it'll be helpful for me Madam. Thank you !

Hopefully a DI box might help you out. The primary function of DI boxes is to take an unbalanced, high-impedance signal and convert it to a balanced, low-impedance signal. This allows you to run guitar and bass directly into microphone preamplifiers.

When I take a line out of a Line6 amplifier and use a 1/4 inch cable to connect to a Behringer UMC202HD Audio Interface and connect to JamKaZam online Jamminh software should I use the Inst setting on that channel on my interface? And for my Ekectro Voice mic use the line input level ? It does not use phantom power.
@MusicRepo
@MusicRepo 3 года назад
If you are taking line out of amp, then you need to use line in on your interface. The Elektro Voice mic should be connected using an XLR cable, and ** if ** the instructions for the Behringer UMC202HD are the same as for the Scarlett interfaces, then by using XLR the interface will automatically assume you have connected a microphone, and so won't matter whether you switch to line or inst on that channel. But I urge you to refer to the manual to check this... !!

I think you can. Experiment by turning your keyboard output all the way down and the AI gain all the way down (you should always do this to start anyway). Then bring your keyboard up, possibly to max, while watching the clip indicator. If it never clips and you want a stronger recording level (-12db or so), start bringing the AI gain up till your recording levels are good (monitoring the levels through your DAW and the clipping indicator ring on the AI). The only really "dangerous" thing to be aware of is phantom power. Make absolutely sure that it's off for every situation other than a condenser mic which uses it. It's potentially hazardous to your equipment because when on, you are going to supply 48V back to the signal source, which if not designed to accept can cause bad money-wasting things to happen. For the best recording, you want the strongest signal from the source (keyboard in your case) with the least gain from the AI necessary. This will keep the noise introduced by the preamp in the AI to a minimum. Shoot for -12db in this manner and your recoding will be cleaner with headroom if you need it during the mix phase.

@@jeffcuthbert6078 thank you so much ☺️ also if I have a condenser mic connected to my scarlet as well as a line/inst input simultaneously, will using 48v phantom power for my condenser mic harm my line/inst input?

@@billyw3130 I would download the user guide from focusrite.com if you already haven't. But it looks like the one 48V button causes phantom power to be delivered to both XLR inputs at the same time (versus just one or the other). The user guide gives the impression that despite this you can still use the other TRS input simultaneously. This makes sense since phantom power only goes to the XLR inputs. So I think you're OK to use both inputs simultaneously with 48V on and one of the inputs being a 1/4" line level/inst jack that doesn't use it. If still unsure though, contact Focusrite and ask them.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5A4TNHJrUHE.html This saved my life I was just wondering if I could connect a Behringer X1832usb that has XLR main outputs to my old Scarlett 2i2 using XLR, fortunately I saw this and wont make that mistake.

I love your passion and expertise, but for me you talk way too fast, and unstructured. So my questions would be: If you have turned on phantom power, many pre amps will put phantom power on all input connections. Can you still mix line, dynamic mic and condensor mics on the same device? second question: would you advise a passive electric bass on line or inst? And what about an active bass? Would you recommend to turn up gain of the instrument or gain of the pre amp to get a decent signal out of the pre amp?

Please don't use the editing technique that cuts out all dead space. I need the space between your sentences to absorb what you just said before you go on to a new idea
