Very interesting Karen, how different they turned out; in your ‘paint first’ version it looks as though all your people are walking away, whereas in your ‘sketch first’ work they’re clearly walking in different directions. For that reason I prefer the second piece 😊. Thanks for this!

I have never been a fan of line and wash. I’ve always thought it was cheating. No longer!!! I am a fan now… these are beautiful. I have to try them. Thanks so much for all that you do.

Hello, I'm french 60 years old woman, living in France. I was searching for " figures in watercolors " The reason I like your tutorials is that you explain e-ve-ry-thing you do. Everything is clear and so so good for me. I like to paint landscapes since a long time, but i'm interesting about figures into a scene. What a good demonstration in This video! :) Thank you very much. ( please excuse my english, I did'nt used any translator... This is " fresh " too ;) )

Hi Karen: Both are wonderful, but I prefer you painting first, and then using the pen. I always grab my brush or my pastels and just start painting. That’s why I’m probably partial to your first painting. Love when you paint people. Thank you for sharing. 💜😎🇺🇸

Thanks for the alternative colors. I asked in last video about quin gold. I had to use a combination of yellow ochre and burnt sienna and sepia. To get the effect. I just ordered quin gold. Excited to use it.

It's really interesting to compare them. I notice you used a lot more ink when you began with ink. I wonder if beginning with color is the reason you used less ink in the one on the left, since there was already more information in the painting, from the color. And then, with no color first, on the right, you did a more detailed drawing. And then maybe felt the need to stay within the lines a bit more. Which one did you enjoy doing more? I admit I have a favorite. To me the one on the left has more energy.
@KarenRiceArt

Thank you for that, you made some really interesting points. I’ve been painting using the line first and watch Second for years… old habits die hard!

Thanks Karen. I hope to get my nerve up to try this try. I’d definitely practice on scrap piece. Sometimes I find that it turns out better on scrap since I know it’s practice but once I put the real piece of paper in front of me I get all scared again. Any suggestions?
@KarenRiceArt

Just keep practising, and you will start to feel more confident, and hopefully that white blank sheet of paper won’t be so daunting.
