Linear Phase Analog EQ. Wait, what??

A way to make analog EQ and filtering play nice with the dry signal for parallel processing. I'm using Reaper and Bettermaker 500 series modules, but the basic technique should work with any DAW and any analog EQ.

Apparently you can negate phase shifting from preamps with recording your source reversed as well. Just tried, it works. 🤷‍♂️

If you allow for viewing the flip operation as landing in negative time, it's called zero phase filtering, because the phase of the flipped run cancels the firsts runs phase. The mathematical proof: Take the input signal x(n) for all samples n to the Fourier domain, X(jw). Applying the filter (in the frequency domain) makes it X(jw)H(jw). Now flip it and we get X(-jw)H(-jw). Then apply the filter again to obtain: X(-jw)H(-jw)H(jw). Do the last flip and we land at: X(jw)H(jw)H(-jw), which is: X(jw)|H(jw)|^2. So indeed a perfectly squared absolute frequency response without any phase manipulations.

A way to make this more tangible is to put a single sample of sound through an EQ. Zooming in on it you will see that the little ticking sound now has a tail after it, in the frequency of the added EQ boost. Do the same with a digital Lineair Phase EQ and you will see that the tail now is mirrored before the sample starts. As you showed this is the exact same thing as running audio through an EQ forwards and backwards.

Then macro control the frenquency shifters to always be the opposite. I’ve experimented with this a bit and you can create weird flavours to distortions and such!

There is a slight difference with backwards compression. If a signal is compressed then reversed, the ducking will happen before the peaks, and will stop right before the signal goes back under the threshold.

nice one - maybe you also could bounce the digital source through the EQ's with 0-value to mix that with the strongly EQ'd signal? Those should have similar phase characteristics that work well together! Best regards
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 5 лет назад
If you run the reverse bounce flat you can flatten out the phase of your DA/AD converters, but preserve the phase changes from the analogue chain.
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 5 лет назад
You could also split the EQ duties differently between bounces. Instead of applying half the EQ on the forward pass and half on the reverse pass, you could apply 3/4 on the forward pass and the last 1/4 in reverse. The result should be partway between minimum phase and linear phase.

Hi Dan. I have a quick question for you. I've heard some people saying that this trick is only addressing the issues associated with the round-trip latency but is it?
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 5 лет назад
The latency is compensated automatically by the Reainsert plugin. This is about phase shifts at specific frequencies, not just an overall time delay.

@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 5 лет назад
The opposite phase shift in the reverse direction cancels out the phase shift in the forward direction.
@Rocksite1
@Rocksite1 5 лет назад
Maybe I need to re-watch it again, but it seemed that you are blending a time-reversed EQ'ed track with an uneffected track; so I'm not seeing where the phase shift in the forward direction comes in. I might think to blend a forward and backward EQ'ed track with the uneffected one; but I don't know if it'd work.

@markbrown9216
@markbrown9216 5 лет назад
A few dumb questions: 1. Is pre-ringing still a problem with this method? 2. Is there any perceptible benefit to avoiding phase shift if you’re EQing a single track (i.e. not being processed in parallel, not part of a multi-microphone arrangement, no bleed from other elements in the mix)? 3. This could still be done with minimum phase plugins (as opposed to just hardware) too, correct?
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 5 лет назад
1. There will be pre-ringing. Whether that's a problem or not depends on the EQ settings and the material. 2. Debatable. In my opinion usually no, but some engineers like to use linear phase EQ: maybe they're hearing stuff that I don't. 3. Yes.

Linear phase means half the ringing is pre-ringing, as the impulse response has to be symmetrical around the impulse (for maths reasons I don't understand). So yes, whatever method you use for linear phase, you get pre-ringing.

Dan, where did this genius idea come from? Is this your own engineering, or a magic trick you picked up from another audio wizzard?
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 2 года назад
I was aware of an existing method to create digital linear phase EQ, in which the audio is windowed, and each window processed both forwards and backwards. And it occurred to me that, if I made the "window" long enough for the whole song it would be easy to do that manually.

if there wasn't compression involved, could you not run the 1st parallel at 1/2 eq, then run the 2nd parallel from the reversed original dry signal and get the same result? if not, why does the 1st parallel have to be processed a second time (in reverse, obviously) to counter the phase effects?
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 2 года назад
The second inverse phase shift needs to be in series with the first phase shift in order to correct it. Doing as you suggest would give two signals, each with opposite phase shift, which will partially cancel if you combine them.
@bjd4
@bjd4 2 года назад
@@DanWorrall but if they are opposite, why wouldn't they completely cancel?
@bjd4
@bjd4 2 года назад
@@DanWorrall oh wait, because it temporal. so the first pass moves the timing off and the reverse of that pass moves the timing the same amount in the opposite direction. sorry, wasn't paying close enough attention
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 2 года назад
The phase shift is opposite. The resulting signals won't be. The phase shift would have to be 90 degs at all frequencies for that to be the case: the difference between your two signals would then be 180 degs at all frequencies. But it isn't, the phase shift from the analogue filters is way more complex than that.
@DanWorrall
@DanWorrall 2 года назад
@@bjd4 or another way to think of it: linear phase requires that the impulse response is symmetrical around the impulse. So you need a forward pass to add the post ringing, and a reverse pass to add the pre ringing.
