Can we please also remember that there is a big difference between the 1930s and the 1940s? Because everyone saying Lineker's comparison is absurd has talked about it as if he was talking about the 1940s. Before the mask-off, open vileness of the 1940s, there was the careful, plausibly deniable rhetoric of the 1930s. He chose the 30s very deliberately.
THANK YOU! The number of morons I have seen, including Braverman herself, saying that Lineker is minimising the Holocaust is infuriating. The mid-1930s involved propaganda videos, the use of language such as "swarm" and "invasion" (yes, Braverman literally used the same language as the 1930s Nazis, meaning Lineker was bang on) . In the later thirties, the Jews were marked out with yellow stars and were subject to extra checks and governmental discrimination. This also marked the beginning of putting Jews in prison camps. The systematic extermination of the Jews, i.e. the Holocaust, began towards the end of the 1930s. I studied 1930s Germany and the rise of the Nazis at college and I can tell you now that Lineker's statement, that the *language* used is reminiscent of the *early* Nazis is entirely correct. He is not saying that the government is carrying out a Holocaust. Some folks need to go and read a history book, and learn about context. I'm glad I'm not the only one to spot this.

The people crossing the channel are not huddled masses of refugees fleeing war and oppression - they are mostly young men from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Albania and other places not at war, and come here seeking a better life. I understand the desire but open borders is not sustainable, nor is encouraging the criminal gangs who couldn't give a shit if a few boatloads overturn in the Channel on the way. If you want a real humanitarian cause - think about those actual deaths as well as the thousands waiting patiently to enter the country legally. The fact these economic migrants have crossed numerous peaceful and safe countries in Europe to get here already tells you there are 100% not desperate refugees.

Unfortunately, looking at Facebook, it is not what "we're all thinking". Like with many opinions & decisions these days, you have to realise that half of the population are below average intelligence (that's how you get an "average") & they cannot think for themselves without relying on the Mail/Sun/Telegraph to tell them how they should think. Albanian was the most common nationality applying for asylum in the UK last year, with 14,223 applicants from the Balkan state - 9,573 of which came from people arriving in boats after crossing the Channel. This is odd to say the least. Albania is a democratic peaceful country not a warzone. Sweden does not allow 'asylum' applications from Albania, why should we?

What I love about Jonathan is that he calls out what's wrong and applauds what's right no matter the person which is what should be what all people do but unfortunately most people are wrapped around certain thoughts and think whatever they say is right and any other thing that's opposed to them is wrong.

Nobody is under the illusion that he was innocently remarking on parallels with another historical period, and it's Godwin's Law itself that points this out - Germany in that time period is so ubiquitous as a point of reference because of the near-universal negative emotional response it evokes, not because every single event happens to bear a resemblance to it that will eventually be brought up. I doubt you would've been nearly so generous for example about people comparing pandemic regulations to that period of German history - which is also a pretty tenuous comparison but you could make the exact same argument of it. Lineker just wanted to the worst adjective our culture has to describe the policy - you know that, and your audience knows that, don't you think if your brand is honesty you owe them not to pretend otherwise?

Well I guess we should stop being vegetarian as Hitler was. We should stop strengthening labour unions and building motorways as that was one of the biggest achievements in Germany before the war. Calling something similar to the nazis means nothing and is frankly idiotic. It's the equivalent of raising a flag saying "look I am the same as you". You cite that applications are down, but completely choose to mention, I must conclude on purpose given the statistics are public and widely discussed, that immigration numbers have skyrocketed. This means that the rate of illegal immigration is up, people aren't intending to apply. So what now? Do we continue to do nothing, which is essential what the Tories have done? Or perhaps we try and dissuade people from making a dangerous, sometimes lethal, journey? I don't recall the nazis trying to REDUCE deaths by dissuading people making a dangerous journey that has cost them over £30,000. More money than most of us have. If these people want refugee status, then go to a safe country (which is essentially ANYWHERE in Europe) and apply at the British embassy. Which they can do... Yet many don't choose to and instead prefer to spend thousands being trafficked and try to force their way in, with no regard for the laws of the land. Should we do nothing and thus encourage the trade, the sex and child trafficking that goes along with this, and the deaths that occur along the way? That is what Lineker and his mindless moronic supporters are encouraging by complaining about any attempt to get a grip on this. They are happy with the rape and abuse of people being trafficked, support the bodies piling up in the Mediterranean, the channel and by the roads of Europe. If you spend more than just a minute thinking about it, their position is reprehensible.
Most of the people who come here in boats are not refugees, but people who want better lives, who want to make money, maybe send some back, because this is a rich country and there's lots of money to be made here. The problem with that is that the country is already very crowded and expensive, and more people will absolutely make those problems worse. An increase in economic competition lowers the price of labour and increases the power of the employer. There are also many safe countries between here and every country where a person might be persecuted.

One of the worst things about all of this is the Tories know their Rwanda and "stop the boats" policies are just food for their base, they know there's zero chance of either of them ever happening. In fact announcing these policies just causes an influx, and more to come even faster. They want to focus on the number that comes by boat because it stops people talking about how they allowed over a million people to come here in 2021 and far more than that last year. The Tories _are the party of immigration_ despite using publicly using anti immigration rhetoric. They are even about to lower the income required to get a visa from £26k to £20k. They pushed for Brexit, most people voted for it because of immigration. The Tories then just replaced EU citizens with Nigerians. For example there's now far more Nigerians coming here on student visas than there was students from the whole EU, Brexit well and truly backfired. It was a con.
