come on man, don't associate it with that. do if you want to, but this is psychedelic, surfy old school rock n roll, it has nothing to do with any of the genres that you have listed.
you do realize that this is the first mainstream song with distortion ever?? Link Wry was citied by numerous people Kurt Cobain, Neil Young as the true godfather of grunge and pretty much all distorted guitar music. I am just stating facts that this song changed the world forever.
They weren't punks is what he was saying. If they weren't punks, then they weren't of an extreme culture/counter-culture they just jammed this song on stage once and the kids at the club loved it. Link has talked about this. The distortion is just his Premier amp cranked saturating the clean signal with harmonics and some compression, a natural overdrive (not distortion). First distorted effects was a damaged speaker, which was replicated in fuzz pedals a bit later on. Everything stems from somewhere.
...and it was impromptu. His group was on the stage and the Diamonds were up next. The MC said "Give me a stroll (popular dance of the time)." Link Wray didn't know what that sounded like so his drummer said, "Like this." and played a few drum beats. The rest is history.
I bought the original record back in 1958 and have just recently started to play the guitar. I can play Rumble, now don't get me wrong, I can't even come close to Link Wray but I have alot of fun trying to get better at it.
I heared this tonight on Sky Arts 1 "This Might Get Loud" Haven't heared since i was a kid I am sure that music is a time machine Because just for a moment I was back in 1958 watching my dad play his 78's on the "Radio Gramme"
On this day in 1959 {Feb. 10th} Link Wray & His Wraymen performed "Rumble" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand Ten months earlier on Apr. 28th, 1958 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it peaked at #16 & spent 14 weeks on the Top 100 It was featured in the movie 'Pulp Fiction' and the pilot episode of HBO's 'The Sopranos' Sixteen days after his death Bruce Springsteen performed it in tribute at a concert in Trenton, NJ... R.I.P. Mr. Wray {1929 - 2005} and Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012}
Little known Move fact, there is an out take from The Warriors that shows them walking along Coney Island Board walk as the sun is going down and they head for the Subway to take them to Van Cortland Park as Rumble plays in the background. It has been posted on RU-vid
These guys INVENTED (I mean for real) the guitar power cord, this song was the first use. It was however, banned from several radio markets because the word RUMBLE was slang for a gang fight. How to make history guys!!!
Pulp Fiction, bro! One of the greatest movies of all time, released 20 years ago this year! I'm referencing the scene in the Jack Rabbit's where Mia Wallace and Vincent Vega are awkwardly talking to each other, then she goes to the bathroom to "powder her nose". This precedes the infamous "Twist Contest" scene. If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend you watch it; fabulous work by Quentin Tarantino.
I heard a Marty Robbins interview where he claimed the fuzz guitar was accidentally invented during the recording of his 1961 song, "Don't Worry". But, that was a few years after Rumble. I guess the mid 50s to mid 60s had so much going on that a lot of things can be claimed by a lot of people. Right?
The time has come for scary things Like vampires, ghosts, and vampire wings Like horrible movies, all drippy and drooly And horrible hosts like me, Svengoolie!
Ya gotta have a strong left hand for power cords. It's why I eventually gave up my electric guitar and went back to my french horn. I leave the power chords to the masters
I have hears the ladies love French Horn players, fingers on the triggers/valves and one in the bell, hand/finger exercisers will build that grip for guitar.
Remember now...Mr link Wray served in the Korean war conflict....so , there is the Influence of after war issues..hiw much dicided his riffs ? Don't know...but he is a stern guitar chords player and there is a mystic tribal taboo about his music ,you must listen carefully ...although he set the presidence for Rock n roll ballads ...he went the way of his generation and set the mood and tone of an Era...forever written in smoke and theory....Mr link Wray.....
