Stop applying for jobs and praying you get calls. Instead leverage the power of LinkedIn to get recruiter calls.
In this video I'll share 5 tips I've learned along my journey to get found by recruiters.
Criteria to have an All-Star LinkedIn profile
1. Profile Photo
2. Industry and location
3. An up-to-date current position (with a description)
4. Two past positions
5. Education
6. Skills (at least three)
7. At least 50 connections
Services to find out if your LinkedIN photo is good or bad
Photofeeler
Snappr
It was Feb 2017, when I received a call out of the blue from Amazon. When I asked how the recruiter found me, she replied “LinkedIn”. At the time I had been working for American Express as a Senior Product Manager. I was making a nice six figure salary, but Amazon gave me an offer and role I COULDN’T refuse.
Having a LinkedIn profile changed my life. I spent a lot of time the past two years refining my profile, learning how to create a compelling story, and amassing a network by going to events and reaching out to people (I now have 1,390 connections). The time was well-spent, with LinkedIn recently granting me with illustrious title of “All-Star” based on my industry, description, education, skills, profile photo, and connections. According to LinkedIn, people with completed profiles “are 40 times more likely to receive opportunities through LinkedIn” because only 51% of members have a completed profile.
LinkedIn has empowered me to flip the traditional “apply and pray” model on its head, making recruiters sell me on opportunities, as opposed to me attempting to sell myself. This creates a tremendous amount of leverage and allows me to simply say “If you want me, then show me the money”
I now have recruiters reaching out to me every week (including Google two months ago).
So, does being on LinkedIn help you get hired?
HELL YES IT DOES

Exactly Barbara- you know what amazed me? I was at American Express a few years ago..I would try and friend some VPs or senior leaders on LinkedIn after I heard them speak or after meeting....they were non existent on LinkedIn. I was like, why on earth would these people close themselves down to opportunity?

Thank you so much, John, but I had the concern of how should I fill out my LinkedIn starting out as a high school senior student about to graduate? I am really passionate about engineering but it seems difficult trying to cultivate my profile towards acquiring internships. How would you go about this? Should I just start networking right now or wait until later on? Thank you again and loved the video!
@JohnMarty-uncommon
@JohnMarty-uncommon 6 лет назад
Hi Denize, sorry for the delay! I was out of town. There is an accomplishments section on Linkedin - For example on my profile I have 4 projects that I worked on . Also, you can get some endorsements from a few teachers at school. In your intro paragraph let the reader know your skills/strengths, how to get hold of you. Also, on Linkedin you should start searching for "campus recruiter" or "university recruiter" and connect - these are the types of recruiters that can get you in the door for internships. If you love engineering you should have some projects on LinkedIn that you can show off/link-to. One strategy that works well is to create a project that specifically deals with something that one of your dream companies is working on. end these projects directly to the campus recruiters through linkedin messaging. Something like - Hi, Jessica, I am passionate about machine learning models that solve X problem and have built X app that I'd love for you to check out." I see that you have internships looking to solve this exact problem and I'd love to connect briefly over the phone sometime next week. Hope this helps! Let me know of you have any other Q's!

Having a custom background image on LinkedIn is definitely key for STANDING OUT from the crowd 😊When designing your cover image, just keep in mind that the placement of your profile photo changes on mobile & desktop, so you’ll want to make sure that none of the important information on your LinkedIn banner (such as call-to-actions, contact details) get hidden by your profile picture 😉

@JohnMarty-uncommon
@JohnMarty-uncommon 5 лет назад
Hi Dash, apologies for the delay in response. If you have a gmail account there's a way to sync your contacts to LinkedIn (this is the fastest way) Otherwise, you can get quite a few contacts each time you go to a meetup, or conference and start building slowly. Let me know if you have any other questions!
@ftakenouchi1464
@ftakenouchi1464 5 лет назад
Also John is it really that easy to mass uploads ppl from gmail or add ppl from conferences that you haven’t really spoken to because I heard it’s not Good to randomly add people to LinkedIn that you have to customize each message and what if there’s time gaps and people don’t remember you? That alone can triple the it takes to reach 500if customization is needed for each connection.

I've been in recruitment for 20 years and I can add. please do not make your LinkedIn Profile look exactly like your RESUME! If you just copy and paste your resume, it's boring. So try and focus on your accomplishments or your projects at your current or past employer. Make your LinkedIn profile as attractive as you can. If you need any tips or ideas please don't hesitate to reach out! And thanks to John for posting these wonderful tips, please follow everything he's said.

@JohnMarty-uncommon 5 лет назад
Hi Tacoma 98, thanks for reaching out. Since I don't know the specifics of your current and desired job, it may be a bit difficult to answer, but I will do my best. You are correct that recruiters will be searching for people with specific titles and companies, which will make things difficult from a "how will recruiters find me" perspective. One of the things I did to get into Product management when I had no prior experience was to get a certification. Can you do something like this? Also, on your resume, I would craft the summary in a way that draws parallels from what you did to what you want to do, and try and express how this can add value (from looking at things from a different perspective. If you send a couple more details I'd be happy to provide a few more suggestions.

So couild you do a video about the different categories, you can fill in? You know DOs and DONTs for Accomplishments, Skills, Volunteers, Job Description and so on? You say 30' with less than 500 is bad. In Germany, a lot of people don´t start studying right after high school. They go first for a job, travel around or any kind of things, just not studying. So i started late with Studying too, because i needed first to work for the money, so i will be able to study in university. It was all kind of jobs, mostly nothing to do what I am studying right now. This year, i will be 29 and still not graduated. And i surely don´t have 500 connections. I don´t think i have even 100. Does it mean, i wouldn´t have any chance on LinkedIn? And what Acitvities do still count as Volunteers beside the obvious ones like GirlScout, helping Veterans and so on? I mean, i´m a webmaster for a non-profit Gaming Community Webpage. These includes writing articles, making and Editing Podcasts and videos. I guess, that doesn´t really count as Volunteering.
@JohnMarty-uncommon
@JohnMarty-uncommon 6 лет назад
Hey Warrior100girl, happy to do a post like that! thanks for the suggestion! When I said 30 with less than 500 connections is bad, its really context specific for the US market or other countries that have a similar culture of starting early. Don't worry about that part at the moment in your situation. The key however is to start getting connections, and going to events where you can meet like-minded people. For the "activities" and volunteering section I would suggest choosing things to display that cater towards the job types you are going after.

Hi Canna, I did mean 500 connection :) Remember that I am speaking from my perspective as an employee in the US market that has been in the industry for a while. LinkedIn is such a powerful tool, and when I see people that have few connections in their 30's it seems a bit strange.

Hey Max, I am sorry to hear you never got called - I know how painful and demoralizing this can be. Are you working now with a job that is in-line with your degree? Sorry for all the questions, I am just very interested in this topic.
