This has become part of my daily practice. Surprisingly fun just run through all of the shapes, or pick a random note and find all of the octaves. Great lesson!
This is a revelation for me, I'm finally seeing the "CAGED" system. These octave root patterns describe the various patterns for scales & chords? Are you going to follow up with that? It would be helpful. These 2 videos & your Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles's Father is the key for me to unlock the fretboard! Thank you so much
Excellent Phil! Yes, I'll be following up with a "CAGED octaves in context" video and giving you some super useful tools for utilising these 5 shapes :) I apreciate you dropping a comment buddy! Stick around! It'll be worth it!
@ Ricky Comiskey - the revelation for me was that those two octave notes name the form & then I realised that whilst the major pentatonic shapes are the same as the minor shapes the forms are different, i.e. the A Major pentatonic pattern between the second & fifth fret of the low E string is the G form, whereas the exact same pattern between the fifth & eighth fret of the low E string is the Am pentatonic pattern, but in E form! Then realising the same major pattern is 3 frets lower (in pitch) than the minor pattern. I'm sure you'll explain it much better, but after 2 years of stumbling around in the dark, you switched the light on! It's going to be an easier journey from now on... Thank you
Are you a left handed player, kind of finding it confusing as i am a right handed player { well not a player i am still learning } love your lessons though !! your a great teacher
Just happened upon this video and the one before. Thank you - this is a wonderful explanation of how to use caged to find your root notes across the fretboard.
Hi Patrick :) Absolutely! I admit the video quality isn't the best, (angles etc) but for me making them is the main thing. More lessons coming on fretboard navigation! thanks for commenting my friend
@@rickysguitar I figured you were either a lefty or this camera did the reverse look. Watching a right hander teach golf to me as a lefty is a nobrainer - as a right handed picker, the reverse thing is not as easy. I don't know why? Maybe I should have learned guitar as lefty as well? :)
Thank You for Confusing the heck out of Me,I spent 2 Months learning the Natural Notes front & Back & BEADGEF and all I am is confused,I have your book too
Once I convince myself that the picture is backwards I was able to see what you’re doing. Now if I can find an app that reverses the screen then no problem. So it was the camera or cell phone you used for this lesson caused the picture to be backwards.

Eyup Ricky. Again another informative lesson. However, when I seen the screen...the mirror image, it then became a little difficult. Although I am left-handed I cannot look at another ;eft-handed guitarist... don't know why. But I have always been like that...and that's been years. I cant seem to see what they are playing...chord or lead positions. For example...Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Kirk Cobane even Tony Iommi. I am not sure if that is weird or what or if anyone else has the same problem. I can look at a right-handed guitarist and not have a problem. Anyway just some useless information
Great lesson, but I have a learning disability and having your guitar show up backwards is killing me. Please don't do that. I love your lessons and have watched a few now and want you to teach me, but this is just weird. Thanks for all you do for us.
