4:46 The ultimate baller NAS is full SSD. Craft Computing did a video on his SSD NAS, which I haven't watched yet because I know nothing about NAS. Also I don't wanna mess with Windows network stuff as that shit is so clunky. I'll just use external hard drives or SD cards as a backup.

Nice vid.. Have also been running synology DS216+ for 6+ Yrs , took mine apart and upgraded the ram, best thing I ever did way more responsive on DSM 7.1.1. Have been humming and arrrrrrging at old Dell or HP rack servers with at least 8+ slots but still cant pull the trigger. With a wife that really loves my (Man cave) office area of collecting ( Shite as she puts it) quality old tech and also run Unifi. ( needed with 3 kids that play constant games online, as the AP's are excellent) Have wondered what is the next upgrade for me to keep the quality plex collection of random films I have backed up as they are not available anywhere else.

Interesting take. I didn't consider the power usage when I built my server. I did use a raspberry for a long while, which I take doesn't use much power, but surely was unreliable. Depending how synology could handle virtualization, I might take a look into for the next version of my home server.

I agree with you about Synology, I had a Synology server farm at the job that I retired from, the video surveillance software is the pretty damn good, I was running 10 HD cameras with no disruptions and I believe its still running . But I wish true NAS had a software package that is as good as Synologys .

Great video. I like ubiquiti’s products but the price and performance and limitations of their cameras aren’t great. I’d love to see a video on cameras which work with Synology or other NASs.

I know nothing about nas software, networking or whatever. I will stick to an easy synology plug and play, dummy friendly install thing I will dump in a closet somewhere.

TrueNAS Scale has Plex available in their app store. Getting it set up and ready to stream would take a few steps...that I have been distracted from actually taking...because distractions are a thing! On a personal opinion note, I have always found Linus to be long on promotion but short on actual tech knowledge. It's like he is trying too hard to be funny and a tech heavy hitter, but falls short in both.

Totally agree, Synology can sell their poor hardware at any price they want, thanks to their unmatched software. Wonder where I've seen that before. Some kind of fruit company or so...

or just get one of those m.2 USB enclosures and put it on a keychain

I had a Kingston USB die and corrupt all the data on it. Ironically that was the only USB I ever paid money for while all the 8GB free ones I have are working, I can't use some of them as a boot medium or use them in certain USB ports because they are mechanically gimmicky but they didn't destroy data so hey that's something. My next USB would be from Samsung. They are experts at this and manufacture their own silicon. SD cards, USBs, SSDs, I'll buy from Samsung.

I'm not sure if you saw recently, but Linus got absolutely nailed to the cross for being wrong. To be frank, you're infinitely more reliable and trustworthy than he ever could be.
