How to technically make Linux boot from a floppy: Compile Linux (I used an old version of Linux: 3.2) In the folder with the Make file run make allnoconfig and make; do not run make install. Copy the bzImage file from arch/x86/boot for later Install grub to a floppy or your preferred medium, create boot folder and copy bzImage to the boot folder. Boot he floppy or whatever you installed grub on. From the grub command line type: kernel /boot/bzImage boot Done! If it kernel panics you know it worked, now on to make a root fs!
