Replacing a HDD with a SSD on older laptops & Desktops makes a huge difference in speed especially with larger programs which require more read/writing. You won't be stuck with your hard drive at 99% for long periods of time.

Joe Collins has a video on his channel from about 2 months ago titled New SSDs for old PCs. At about 16 minutes 30 seconds into the video he talks about cloning hdd's over to ssd's, which he doesn't recommend. According to him it will work but will not have optimal performance. He recommends backing up data off the old drive then doing a fresh install on the new drive.

I have started to use SSD's in all my laptops and Desktops. The Desktops boot SSD and the /home is on a spinner for just in case the 0's & 1's gets nuts... Lol Thanks Tom. LLAP 🖖

Ahhh, CloneZilla...nice!!! Thanks for the info/tutorial. My PC CPU finally kicked the bucket. Waiting on new and upgraded parts and another paycheck to finish it. I am using my emergency laptop and dang, it is a slow as well. So I ordered a few SSD's for the PC upgrade and this laptop as well. I added the ram to the max as well and got a new battery to. Seems a lot better, can't wait to get my PC up and running again.

I have replaced hard drives to SSDs in 3 laptops which greatly sped up all of them. Also use SSDs for the OS in my desktops. I had a problem early on with one SSD with Windows OS and so replaced it. Later have used the same SSD with a Linux OS and have not had any problems with it since (mainly a PC used to try different Linux flavors so not critical).

1:20 - it's the opposite actually; these days we have a lot of cheap crap with TLC and QLC NANDs inside. Couple years back we had good, reliable MLC SSDs like Crucial/Micron M550, MX100, BX100, BX300; Samsung 850 Pro, etc. Later the market became saturated, the producers began to cheat ( started replacing components without noticing customers - for example famous case with Kingston V300 where synchronous NANDs was replaced with asynchronous.) Nevertheless MX500 is trusted product but plastic case you talking about in 3:03 is weird - it always was in metal... BTW: good choice for Linux users because of Micron's Storage Executive Software.

Resquezilla is also a good option which btw is a Clonezilla GUI

I think I might have that on my ventoy disk but have not booted into it. I'll check it out

@@SwitchedtoLinux check it out since i managed to use it on a PC that clonezilla did not worked. I have used Resquezilla on 3 cases always with success . If doesnt boot use the version 2.3.1

I was under the impression on an SSD you need to have some free space for maintenance and housekeeping of the ssd? Lik 15 - 20%

I was told that a HD and SSD had different layouts or something , Anyway you couldn't copy because of that. So I just did a fresh install and a script to install my apps like DT and EZ-nix suggested . All that remained was the odd program I forgot. I put an ssd on my dinosaur Dell latitude E6410 a year ago. Boot-time was much faster but more impressive was battery-life went from 45 min to 1 1/2 hrs. A month ago I did my main same way /w fresh install for $80 Canadian for 1TB. This old 7 yr. is snappy now. Both had a lot of leftover fluff probably anyway. next time ill try Zilla . One mention is target must be same or bigger. If bigger just resize when you're all done.

Great video! I haven't had a chance to do try Clonezilla on Red Hat with an encrypted drive and moving from one drive to another. Do you think it would work the same or is Red Hat encryption more problematic? Thanks.

l have bought 10 ssds over the last 5 years, samsung, wd, crucial ,ocz, and scandisk. the only one to give up the ghost was a samsung, still under warranty but because l lost the receipt, l never got it replaced, always keep the receipt

Is there any way you could do a video on how to generating the clonezilla loader using Ventoy. I am stuck on this part of the clone process. I was able to build a Ventoy flash USB boot loader. I have no idea how to use Ventoy to load the different distros etc to flash. So complicated and so much bad information out there. You seem like you care about helping people. I’m trying to learn about Linux but it is a big push. I’m so sick of the windows environment. Thanks so much for this video.

Can I do this to transfer a Linux Mint OS to an external hard drive I can use with a refurbished ThinkPad with an embedded multimedia card?

Most likely it will work.

Well.. SSD is not reliable? Most SSDs are very reliable like most HDDs. This is true for SSDs for about a decade. This is also true today, even if they are way cheaper.

Can I copy over a Linux Mint and have it boot via UEFI instead of legacy, which it is installed as on the old drive?
@SwitchedtoLinux
@SwitchedtoLinux 10 месяцев назад
You will need to add a UEFI bootloader to the new drive. The boot mod is on the boot loader and it is called by the startup. Copying the drive will most likely work as most computers try UEFI first and then legacy if that does not work.

Does Clonzilla copy empty space or does it only copy necessary data?
@SwitchedtoLinux

Everything, so including the empty space, which ensures an exact copy.

From what I have read, all solid state storage shares the same problem. As opposed to hdds, which give you plenty of warning that the end is near, a solid state (USB flash and Kindles included) will just suddenly die. If anyone knows of a way around this, I remain fearful for my old Kindle voyage. SSD less so.

i cannot get the cloned drive to boot. Going from a small HDD to a larger SSD. Gives me a error disk msg and goes to grub. It looks simple , but it isn't.

Much better than the hp I had that broke. The hinges on my Dell seem to be a little more robust. And it seems to be easier to repair than the hp was.

Dude, since you want to be a youtuber, get an external capture card and present videos properly. This thing with the camera movement, caused me a headache....

If you want to be a HUMAN watch the part of the video where I SHOW the capture card and that it does NOT work on Clonezilla, but it is a terminal based application without full desktop support.
