You have to put in the password 2 times because it doesn't use the TPM for encryption, so you have too put in the password once for decryption and once to unlock, this is inconvenient but more secure.

Pop! OS is great! - It runs very well on all Dell machines. I have it installed in 3 different models of Optiplex.

I love old corporate desktops. They're cheap and typically work great with Linux. Obsolete is a matter of opinion. Any computer that works and does what I need it to do is good enough for me.

I havent really tried POP in a Long While, I was excited when it first came out, but I was fine with MINT Now that its been getting some major upgrades & polish I wanna give it another shot Well done Sir

I don't usually run Ubuntu/Debian-based distros (Arch, btw! it's a meme!), but I recently put PopOS on an older iMac and it was easy and fun. Pop does a weird thing, they're based off the last Ubuntu LTS, but they do rolling upgrades of the kernel, mesa, and a few other key things, to keep brand new hardware working well. I'd recommend it. PopOS 24.04 is coming this fall, with a completely new, written from scratch desktop environment!

With windows 11 upcoming next year thanks to ending win10 support, there are now SO MANY of these ex office pcs for sale and so cheap, seen some here now for $50 including an i5 and 8GB of ram. I've tried many distributions and I keep coming back to Mint of easy use. I could also recommend MX Linux if you want a really snappy experience, also it has a lot of cool looking desktop display things thanks to conky being setup with a lot of presets.

I've never tried POP OS but I installed Mint on my OptiPlex 7010 last week. It handled the drivers for my RTX A2000 flawlessly and I'm able to play my Steam games (with Proton enabled). It was great to have a viable alternative for my PC since its Windows EOL happens next year.

@@basicdadtech yeah but I guess they gotta cut it off some time. 10 years is a while... still, it's kind of annoying because they're forcing a hardware upgrade, either that or you have to bypass certain checks. And who's to say that after some point a system update isn't just going to bork your OS? Nah, I got tired of Microsoft's BS 18 months ahead of the EOL so I figured I'd get a jump on migration. And I have to say, two+ months in, I'm liking Linux. It's not perfect, but what is? It's acceptable, and in some ways, superior.

I'd say give EndeavourOS a go. Arch based rolling release with KDE Plasma would be a good comparison to the distros you've tried that are Debian based fixed releases with Gnome.

Maybe give ZorinOS a try, they have the free version and the paid version. Only thing paid version has that is different is "pre made themes" that they made. It's basically a donation but you get a few extra themes for said donations.

Hey, I know how to do all this stuff but I love watching these kind of videos because you're a beginner, and I wish others could see how easy it is to install Linux and use it. Also, I love pop but the gnome version they have currently is too buggy for my setup. I suspect it has to do with the Nvidia GPU. However, they are coming out with their own Desktop environment and this should smooth out most bugs, and Nvidia is actually starting to do some work with the open source drivers it looks like. A desktop environment is the thing like Gnome, or Kde, or Cinnamon if you aren't aware. I am super glad you are getting use out of your old machines with Linux, I think more people need to stop and think, is it really worth throwing this machine away if it works fine with a Linux setup?
@SeeJayPlayGames

expect to see a lot of 7th gen and lower PCs on the used market / scrap heap come next October. But they'll still be great for Linux. What I can't get over is how many of these terrible GP... I mean, display adapters did they (over)produce? Why can I *still* buy a GT 710? Or a Radeon HD 7470? Why haven't they been (figuratively) taken out back and shot already? Recycled for gold, perhaps? Guess not much gold...

regards to the vulkan shader loading, you shouldn't have to do it every time. Their is a setting in steam "Downloads" to enable background vulkan shader processing then you can select skip on the shaders popup and it should allow you to play while simultaneously process the shaders in the background. While you are in the settings go to "Compatibility" and enable "steam play for all other titles" this setting will allow you to download and play windows only games mostly seamlessly (if they don't have aggressive anti cheat software)
@basicdadtech
@basicdadtech 3 месяца назад

@mercuriete
@mercuriete 3 месяца назад
You can skip the process as well. If you really want to play you can skip It and have some stutter later. Shader compilation is only done when mesa is updated. And mesa is updated only when you want to update the system.

I would recommend that after you install any linux distro whether be Pop, Linux Mint, Zorin, etc. would be to do update the system so it has the newest drives/software installed. welcome to the world of Linux :3

Steam: Processing Vulkan shaders: This only happens when you first fire up a new game, or when you've changed something in the system config (new GPU, new mesa version, sometimes a new kernel). Also, the amount of time it takes depends on the power of the GPU being used. Another thought, did you use the Nvidia or Intel spin of PopOS? If it was the Intel/generic one, that would explain it, the Nvidia 1030 would have been running the open source drivers, which can be quite a bit slower.

Tip: if you separate your root (/) and /home directories by putting them on different volumes, you can reinstall your distro (or a totally different distro) without much, if anything, happening to your personal files and app configurations. That's what I did with Garuda - I put / on a 30GB btrfs volume and my /home went on a separate 190GB ext4 volume.

If you want a more advanced challenge, that particular Dell Optiplex is supported by 3Mdeb's Dasharo coreboot distribution, so you can flash an open source firmware as well, for bonus freedom units. Pop is a great choice for new Linux users, it's very friendly and self-maintaining. I have an Optiplex 9010 running Dasharo and Linux as well, it's a nice rock solid minimal machine.

About proton shaders, there is an option to have it cache shaders in real time in the steam settings. It's under storage if I recall correctly, though it may affect the performance of your laptop quite a bit

Couple of things. If you want to make gnome (the desktop environment that PopOS currently uses) better, install gnome tweaks. For codecs, install ubuntu restricted extras. And for shaders in steam, the first time always takes a min. After that, it should only do it once there is an update. if it tries again, you can skip it.
